Objective: To provide an overview of the decision fusion (DF) technique and describe the applications of the technique in healthcare and medicine at prevention, diagnosis, treatment and administrative levels. Background: The rapid development of technology over the past 20 years has led to an explosion in data growth in various industries, like healthcare. Big data analysis within the healthcare systems is essential for arriving to a value-based decision over a period of time. Diversity and uncertainty in big data analytics have made it impossible to analyze data by using conventional data mining techniques and thus alternative solutions are required. DF is a form of data fusion techniques that could increase the accuracy of diagnosis and facilitate interpretation, summarization and sharing of information. Methods: We conducted a review of articles published between January 1980 and December 2020 from various databases such as Google Scholar, IEEE, PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus and web of science using the keywords decision fusion (DF), information fusion, healthcare, medicine and big data. A total of 141 articles were included in this narrative review. Conclusions: Given the importance of big data analysis in reducing costs and improving the quality of healthcare; along with the potential role of DF in big data analysis, it is recommended to know the full potential of this technique including the advantages, challenges and applications of the technique before its use. Future studies should focus on describing the methodology and types of data used for its applications within the healthcare sector

A systematic literature review of data science, data analytics and machine learning applied to healthcare engineering systems

The objective of this paper is to assess and synthesize the published literature related to the application of data analytics, big data, data mining, and machine learning to healthcare engineering systems. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted to obtain the most relevant papers related to the research study from three different platforms: EBSCOhost, ProQuest, and Scopus. The literature was assessed and synthesized, conducting analysis associated with the publications, authors, and content. From the SLR, 576 publications were identified and analyzed. The research area seems to show the characteristics of a growing field with new research areas evolving and applications being explored. In addition, the main authors and collaboration groups publishing in this research area were identified throughout a social network analysis. This could lead new and current authors to identify researchers with common interests on the field. The use of the SLR methodology does not guarantee that all relevant publications related to the research are covered and analyzed. However, the authors’ previous knowledge and the nature of the publications were used to select different platforms. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper represents the most comprehensive literature-based study on the fields of data analytics, big data, data mining, and machine learning applied to healthcare engineering systems.N/

Open Access JournalWith the rapid development of “Internet plus”, medical care has entered the era of big data. However, there is little research on medical big data (MBD) from the perspectives of bibliometrics and visualization. The substantive research on the basic aspects of MBD itself is also rare. This study aims to explore the current status of medical big data through visualization analysis on the journal papers related to MBD. We analyze a total of 988 references which were downloaded from the Science Citation Index Expanded and the Social Science Citation Index databases from Web of Science and the time span was defined as “all years”. The GraphPad Prism 5, VOSviewer and CiteSpace softwares are used for analysis. Many results concerning the annual trends, the top players in terms of journal and institute levels, the citations and H-index in terms of country level, the keywords distribution, the highly cited papers, the co-authorship status and the most influential journals and authors are presented in this paper. This study points out the development status and trends on MBD. It can help people in the medical profession to get comprehensive understanding on the state of the art of MBD. It also has reference values for the research and application of the MBD visualization methods
