    Using Transcoding for Hidden Communication in IP Telephony

    The paper presents a new steganographic method for IP telephony called TranSteg (Transcoding Steganography). Typically, in steganographic communication it is advised for covert data to be compressed in order to limit its size. In TranSteg it is the overt data that is compressed to make space for the steganogram. The main innovation of TranSteg is to, for a chosen voice stream, find a codec that will result in a similar voice quality but smaller voice payload size than the originally selected. Then, the voice stream is transcoded. At this step the original voice payload size is intentionally unaltered and the change of the codec is not indicated. Instead, after placing the transcoded voice payload, the remaining free space is filled with hidden data. TranSteg proof of concept implementation was designed and developed. The obtained experimental results are enclosed in this paper. They prove that the proposed method is feasible and offers a high steganographic bandwidth. TranSteg detection is difficult to perform when performing inspection in a single network localisation.Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, 4 table

    Integrated Architecture for Configuration and Service Management in MANET Environments

    Esta tesis nos ha permitido trasladar algunos conceptos teóricos de la computación ubicua a escenarios reales, identificando las necesidades específicas de diferentes tipos de aplicaciones. Con el fin de alcanzar este objetivo, proponemos dos prototipos que proporcionan servicios sensibles al contexto en diferentes entornos, tales como conferencias o salas de recuperación en hospitales. Estos prototipos experimentales explotan la tecnología Bluetooth para ofrecer información basada en las preferencias del usuario. En ambos casos, hemos llevado a cabo algunos experimentos con el fin de evaluar el comportamiento de los sistemas y su rendimento. También abordamos en esta tesis el problema de la autoconfiguración de redes MANET basadas en el estándar 802.11 a través de dos soluciones novedosas. La primera es una solución centralizada que se basa en la tecnología Bluetooth, mientras la segunda es una solución distribuida que no necesita recurrir a ninguna tecnología adicional, ya que se basa en el uso del parámetro SSID. Ambos métodos se han diseñado para permitir que usuarios no expertos puedan unirse a una red MANET de forma transparente, proporcionando una configuración automática, rápida, y fiable de los terminales. Los resultados experimentales en implementaciones reales nos han permitido evaluar el rendimiento de las soluciones propuestas y demostrar que las estaciones cercanas se pueden configurar en pocos segundos. Además, hemos comparado ambas soluciones entre sí para poner de manifiesto las diferentes ventajas y desventajas en cuanto a rendimento.     Pervasive service discovery in low-power and lossy networks

    Pervasive Service Discovery (SD) in Low-power and Lossy Networks (LLNs) is expected to play a major role in realising the Internet of Things (IoT) vision. Such a vision aims to expand the current Internet to interconnect billions of miniature smart objects that sense and act on our surroundings in a way that will revolutionise the future. The pervasiveness and heterogeneity of such low-power devices requires robust, automatic, interoperable and scalable deployment and operability solutions. At the same time, the limitations of such constrained devices impose strict challenges regarding complexity, energy consumption, time-efficiency and mobility. This research contributes new lightweight solutions to facilitate automatic deployment and operability of LLNs. It mainly tackles the aforementioned challenges through the proposition of novel component-based, automatic and efficient SD solutions that ensure extensibility and adaptability to various LLN environments. Building upon such architecture, a first fully-distributed, hybrid pushpull SD solution dubbed EADP (Extensible Adaptable Discovery Protocol) is proposed based on the well-known Trickle algorithm. Motivated by EADPs’ achievements, new methods to optimise Trickle are introduced. Such methods allow Trickle to encompass a wide range of algorithms and extend its usage to new application domains. One of the new applications is concretized in the TrickleSD protocol aiming to build automatic, reliable, scalable, and time-efficient SD. To optimise the energy efficiency of TrickleSD, two mechanisms improving broadcast communication in LLNs are proposed. Finally, interoperable standards-based SD in the IoT is demonstrated, and methods combining zero-configuration operations with infrastructure-based solutions are proposed. Experimental evaluations of the above contributions reveal that it is possible to achieve automatic, cost-effective, time-efficient, lightweight, and interoperable SD in LLNs. These achievements open novel perspectives for zero-configuration capabilities in the IoT and promise to bring the ‘things’ to all people everywhere

    Protocols and Algorithms for Adaptive Multimedia Systems

    The deployment of WebRTC and telepresence systems is going to start a wide-scale adoption of high quality real-time communication. Delivering high quality video usually corresponds to an increase in required network capacity and also requires an assurance of network stability. A real-time multimedia application that uses the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) over UDP needs to implement congestion control since UDP does not implement any such mechanism. This thesis is about enabling congestion control for real-time communication, and deploying it on the public Internet containing a mixture of wired and wireless links. A congestion control algorithm relies on congestion cues, such as RTT and loss. Hence, in this thesis, we first propose a framework for classifying congestion cues. We classify the congestion cues as a combination of: where they are measured or observed? And, how is the sending endpoint notified? For each there are two options, i.e., the cues are either observed and reported by an in-path or by an off-path source, and, the cue is either reported in-band or out-of-band, which results in four combinations. Hence, the framework provides options to look at congestion cues beyond those reported by the receiver. We propose a sender-driven, a receiver-driven and a hybrid congestion control algorithm. The hybrid algorithm relies on both the sender and receiver co-operating to perform congestion control. Lastly, we compare the performance of these different algorithms. We also explore the idea of using capacity notifications from middleboxes (e.g., 3G/LTE base stations) along the path as cues for a congestion control algorithm. Further, we look at the interaction between error-resilience mechanisms and show that FEC can be used in a congestion control algorithm for probing for additional capacity. We propose Multipath RTP (MPRTP), an extension to RTP, which uses multiple paths for either aggregating capacity or for increasing error-resilience. We show that our proposed scheduling algorithm works in diverse scenarios (e.g., 3G and WLAN, 3G and 3G, etc.) with paths with varying latencies. Lastly, we propose a network coverage map service (NCMS), which aggregates throughput measurements from mobile users consuming multimedia services. The NCMS sends notifications to its subscribers about the upcoming network conditions, which take these notifications into account when performing congestion control. In order to test and refine the ideas presented in this thesis, we have implemented most of them in proof-of-concept prototypes, and conducted experiments and simulations to validate our assumptions and gain new insights.

    Strategies for Managing Linked Enterprise Data

    Data, information and knowledge become key assets of our 21st century economy. As a result, data and knowledge management become key tasks with regard to sustainable development and business success. Often, knowledge is not explicitly represented residing in the minds of people or scattered among a variety of data sources. Knowledge is inherently associated with semantics that conveys its meaning to a human or machine agent. The Linked Data concept facilitates the semantic integration of heterogeneous data sources. However, we still lack an effective knowledge integration strategy applicable to enterprise scenarios, which balances between large amounts of data stored in legacy information systems and data lakes as well as tailored domain specific ontologies that formally describe real-world concepts. In this thesis we investigate strategies for managing linked enterprise data analyzing how actionable knowledge can be derived from enterprise data leveraging knowledge graphs. Actionable knowledge provides valuable insights, supports decision makers with clear interpretable arguments, and keeps its inference processes explainable. The benefits of employing actionable knowledge and its coherent management strategy span from a holistic semantic representation layer of enterprise data, i.e., representing numerous data sources as one, consistent, and integrated knowledge source, to unified interaction mechanisms with other systems that are able to effectively and efficiently leverage such an actionable knowledge. Several challenges have to be addressed on different conceptual levels pursuing this goal, i.e., means for representing knowledge, semantic data integration of raw data sources and subsequent knowledge extraction, communication interfaces, and implementation. In order to tackle those challenges we present the concept of Enterprise Knowledge Graphs (EKGs), describe their characteristics and advantages compared to existing approaches. We study each challenge with regard to using EKGs and demonstrate their efficiency. In particular, EKGs are able to reduce the semantic data integration effort when processing large-scale heterogeneous datasets. Then, having built a consistent logical integration layer with heterogeneity behind the scenes, EKGs unify query processing and enable effective communication interfaces for other enterprise systems. The achieved results allow us to conclude that strategies for managing linked enterprise data based on EKGs exhibit reasonable performance, comply with enterprise requirements, and ensure integrated data and knowledge management throughout its life cycle

Esta solución se basa en dos conceptos tecnológicos novedosos, la computación autónoma y los agentes móviles.     Space Plug-and-Play Architecture Networking: A Self-Configuring Heterogeneous Network Architecture

    The Space Plug-and-Play Architecture (SPA) networking approach outlined in this dissertation is an improvement over the previous approach used by the Satellite Data Model(SDM). The first improvement is the introduction of a SPA network model based on the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. Second, a new addressing and routing scheme is presented, which places the burden of routing on the network infrastructure instead of the network endpoints. These improvements have been implemented in a software infrastructure called the SPA Services Manager (SSM). The SSM was developed under an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 certified development process, the details of which are presented. A collection of network timing graphs that measure latency and jitter of the SPA network is contained in this dissertation, as well as a runtime memory footprint. The maturity of the development process and these initial performance measurements demonstrate that the SSM is qualified for spaceflight
