    Get PDF
Freight transportation is increasingly connected with the automation of fleet assets by intelligent systems. This study emerges from the consortium research project Gaia-X 4 ROMS, which aims to develop a comprehensive approach for smart freight fleets in the field of parcel deliveries. Within this project, a novel type of multi-agent system (MAS) applied to freight fleet management is being developed. To determine the state of prior research and recent developments in this field, a systematic literature review was conducted and presented herein. The findings of the review demonstrate a significant lack of applied solutions in this topic, highlighting the need for a novel approach. Accordingly, a first framework for the envisioned multi-agent system, as conceptualized within the consortium research project, is presented in this work, serving as a basis for subsequent design phases

Remote health monitoring is becoming indispensable, though, Internet of Things (IoTs)-based solutions have many implementation challenges, including energy consumption at the sensing node, and delay and instability due to cloud computing. Compressive sensing (CS) has been explored as a method to extend the battery lifetime of medical wearable devices. However, it is usually associated with computational complexity at the decoding end, increasing the latency of the system. Meanwhile, mobile processors are becoming computationally stronger and more efficient. Heterogeneous multicore platforms (HMPs) offer a local processing solution that can alleviate the limitations of remote signal processing. This paper demonstrates the real-time performance of compressed ECG reconstruction on ARM's big.LITTLE HMP and the advantages they provide as the primary processing unit of the IoT architecture. It also investigates the efficacy of CS in minimizing power consumption of a wearable device under real-time and hardware constraints. Results show that both the orthogonal matching pursuit and subspace pursuit reconstruction algorithms can be executed on the platform in real time and yield optimum performance on a single A15 core at minimum frequency. The CS extends the battery life of wearable medical devices up to 15.4% considering ECGs suitable for wellness applications and up to 6.6% for clinical grade ECGs. Energy consumption at the gateway is largely due to an active internet connection; hence, processing the signals locally both mitigates system's latency and improves gateway's battery life. Many remote health solutions can benefit from an architecture centered around the use of HMPs, a step toward better remote health monitoring systems.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

It is by now common knowledge that one of the aspects upon which the survival of the University depends is how it will make the best possible use of the new technologies (e-learning). Despite the acceptance of this principle, difficulties arise when one attempts to proceed from the mere declaration to actually planning activities and putting them into effect. This research, the result of collaboration between teachers and researchers of the Educational Science and Engineering Faculties of the University of Florence, focuses on certain theoretical concepts and reference apparatus, bringing international literature to bear on the specific case of Italy. However, this irruption of technology introduces several questions or problematic situations closely connected to the displacement that some people undergo in their professional role due to the pressure of the new technologies. This article focuses on the reconsideration of initiatives for the design and production of educational resources, which can be used in different teaching activities, which expediently combine presential and distance education, through the so-called virtual educational areas. We think the design and production of quality educational resources, which could be suitable for distance learning, it is necessary to recover the creative capability of educators, by means of author tools that enable them to co-exist with this technological revolution without being exiled by it. In this way the paper presents an author tool for the creation of educational resources or hypermedia electronic books, so called Facilitator for the Composition of Hypertexts

Modern health information technology is not just a supporting instrument to good information management but a strategic requirement to provide more efficient and safer health care. Health information technology is a cornerstone to build the future patient-centric health care systems in which a comprehensive set of patient data will be available to the relevant care teams, in spite of where (system or service point) it was generated. Such secure and efficient use of clinical data is challenged by the existing fragmentation of health information systems implementation. Several approaches have been proposed to address the limitations of the so called “information silos” in healthcare, ranging from full centralization (a single system) to full-decentralized clinical message exchange networks. In this work we advocate the use of a service-based unification layer, by federating distributed heterogeneous information sources. This clinical information hub provides the basis to build regional-level applications, which we have demonstrated by implementing a virtual Electronic Health Record system. Unlike the message-driven, point-to-point approaches popular in health care systems integration, we developed a middleware layer, using J2EE architectural patterns, in which the common information is represented as an object model, accessible through programming interfaces. The proposed architecture was instantiated in the Rede Telemática da Saúde network, a platform deployed in the region of Aveiro connecting eight partner institutions (two hospitals and six primary care units), covering ~ 350,000 citizens, indexing information on more than 19,000,000 episodes of care and used by ~350 registered professionals. In addition to the regional health information collaborative platform (RTSys), we introduce a second line of research towards bridging the care networks and the science networks. In the later scenario, we propose the use of Grid computing to enable the massive use and integration of biomedical information. The proposed architecture (not implemented) enables to access existing e-Science infrastructures to create clinical information repositories for health applications

Agent-oriented techniques are likely to be the next significant breakthrough in software development process. They provide a uniform approach throughout the analysis, design and implementation phases in the development life cycle. Agent-oriented techniques are a natural extension to object-oriented techniques, but while there is a whole pIethora of analysis and design methods in the object-oriented paradigm, very little work has been reported on design and analysis methods in the agent-oriented community. After surveying and examining a number of well-known object-oriented design and analysis methods, we argue that none of these methods, provide the adequate model for the design and analysis of multi-agent systems. Therefore, we propose a new agent-specific methodology that is based on and builds upon object-oriented methods. We identify three major models that need to be build during the development of multi-agent applications and describe the process of building these models
