Using a conic bundle method to accelerate both phases of a quadratic convex reformulation
We present algorithm MIQCR-CB that is an advancement of method
MIQCR~(Billionnet, Elloumi and Lambert, 2012). MIQCR is a method for solving
mixed-integer quadratic programs and works in two phases: the first phase
determines an equivalent quadratic formulation with a convex objective function
by solving a semidefinite problem , and, in the second phase, the
equivalent formulation is solved by a standard solver. As the reformulation
relies on the solution of a large-scale semidefinite program, it is not
tractable by existing semidefinite solvers, already for medium sized problems.
To surmount this difficulty, we present in MIQCR-CB a subgradient algorithm
within a Lagrangian duality framework for solving that substantially
speeds up the first phase. Moreover, this algorithm leads to a reformulated
problem of smaller size than the one obtained by the original MIQCR method
which results in a shorter time for solving the second phase.
We present extensive computational results to show the efficiency of our
algorithm
A Lagrangian relaxation approach to the edge-weighted clique problem
The -clique polytope is the convex hull of the node and edge incidence vectors of all subcliques of size at most of a complete graph on nodes. Including the Boolean quadric polytope as a special case and being closely related to the quadratic knapsack polytope, it has received considerable attention in the literature. In particular, the max-cut problem is equivalent with optimizing a linear function over . The problem of optimizing linear functions over has so far been approached via heuristic combinatorial algorithms and cutting-plane methods. We study the structure of in further detail and present a new computational approach to the linear optimization problem based on Lucena's suggestion of integrating cutting planes into a Lagrangian relaxation of an integer programming problem. In particular, we show that the separation problem for tree inequalities becomes polynomial in our Lagrangian framework. Finally, computational results are presented. \u
A MINLP Solution for Pellet Reactor Modeling
A fluidized bed reactor for phosphate precipitation and removal from wastewater is modeled according to a two-step procedure. The first modeling phase, based on the development of a thermodynamic model for the computation of phosphate conversion, previously presented elsewhere
is not reported here. The second step is related to the reactor modeling in the core of this paper.
The pellet reactor is modeled as a reactor network involving a set of elementary cells representing
ideal flow patterns. All the potential solutions are imbedded into a superstructure and the modeling
problem is expressed as a MINLP problem. The MINLP problem is solved by means of the GAMS package, first for two flow rate values corresponding to two experimental fluidized bed
behaviours, and then for the two flow rates considered simultaneously. In each case, the problem consists in finding an output concentration as close as possible to the experimental output concentration.
Three objective functions are studied. The results are compared with those of Montastruc et al. (2004) who used a different numerical procedure. Whatever the considered case, the solutions found are structurally simpler than the ones of Montastruc et al. (2004). A major assessment
of this study is that the reactor efficiency can easily be deduced, without any precise knowledge of some key parameters such as the density and thickness of the calcium phosphate layer. Finally a last numerical study concerning the superstructure definition shows that too complex a
superstructure does not provide significant refinements on the solution

Optimal exact designs of experiments via Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming
Optimal exact designs are problematic to find and study because there is no unified theory for determining them and studyingtheir properties. Each has its own challenges and when a method exists to confirm the design optimality, it is invariablyapplicable to the particular problem only.We propose a systematic approach to construct optimal exact designs by incorporatingthe Cholesky decomposition of the Fisher Information Matrix in a Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming formulation. Asexamples, we apply the methodology to find D- and A-optimal exact designs for linear and nonlinear models using global orlocal optimizers. Our examples include design problems with constraints on the locations or the number of replicates at theoptimal design points
Portfolio selection problems in practice: a comparison between linear and quadratic optimization models
Several portfolio selection models take into account practical limitations on
the number of assets to include and on their weights in the portfolio. We
present here a study of the Limited Asset Markowitz (LAM), of the Limited Asset
Mean Absolute Deviation (LAMAD) and of the Limited Asset Conditional
Value-at-Risk (LACVaR) models, where the assets are limited with the
introduction of quantity and cardinality constraints. We propose a completely
new approach for solving the LAM model, based on reformulation as a Standard
Quadratic Program and on some recent theoretical results. With this approach we
obtain optimal solutions both for some well-known financial data sets used by
several other authors, and for some unsolved large size portfolio problems. We
also test our method on five new data sets involving real-world capital market
indices from major stock markets. Our computational experience shows that,
rather unexpectedly, it is easier to solve the quadratic LAM model with our
algorithm, than to solve the linear LACVaR and LAMAD models with CPLEX, one of
the best commercial codes for mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problems.
Finally, on the new data sets we have also compared, using out-of-sample
analysis, the performance of the portfolios obtained by the Limited Asset
models with the performance provided by the unconstrained models and with that
of the official capital market indices

Adaptive grid semidefinite programming for finding optimal designs
We find optimal designs for linear models using anovel algorithm that iteratively combines a semidefinite programming(SDP) approach with adaptive grid techniques.The proposed algorithm is also adapted to find locally optimaldesigns for nonlinear models. The search space is firstdiscretized, and SDP is applied to find the optimal designbased on the initial grid. The points in the next grid set arepoints that maximize the dispersion function of the SDPgeneratedoptimal design using nonlinear programming. Theprocedure is repeated until a user-specified stopping rule isreached. The proposed algorithm is broadly applicable, andwe demonstrate its flexibility using (i) models with one ormore variables and (ii) differentiable design criteria, suchas A-, D-optimality, and non-differentiable criterion like Eoptimality,including the mathematically more challengingcasewhen theminimum eigenvalue of the informationmatrixof the optimal design has geometric multiplicity larger than 1. Our algorithm is computationally efficient because it isbased on mathematical programming tools and so optimalityis assured at each stage; it also exploits the convexity of theproblems whenever possible. Using several linear and nonlinearmodelswith one or more factors, we showthe proposedalgorithm can efficiently find optimal designs

A review of portfolio planning: Models and systems
In this chapter, we first provide an overview of a number of portfolio planning models
which have been proposed and investigated over the last forty years. We revisit the
mean-variance (M-V) model of Markowitz and the construction of the risk-return
efficient frontier. A piecewise linear approximation of the problem through a
reformulation involving diagonalisation of the quadratic form into a variable
separable function is also considered. A few other models, such as, the Mean
Absolute Deviation (MAD), the Weighted Goal Programming (WGP) and the
Minimax (MM) model which use alternative metrics for risk are also introduced,
compared and contrasted. Recently asymmetric measures of risk have gained in
importance; we consider a generic representation and a number of alternative
symmetric and asymmetric measures of risk which find use in the evaluation of
portfolios. There are a number of modelling and computational considerations which
have been introduced into practical portfolio planning problems. These include: (a)
buy-in thresholds for assets, (b) restriction on the number of assets (cardinality
constraints), (c) transaction roundlot restrictions. Practical portfolio models may also
include (d) dedication of cashflow streams, and, (e) immunization which involves
duration matching and convexity constraints. The modelling issues in respect of these
features are discussed. Many of these features lead to discrete restrictions involving
zero-one and general integer variables which make the resulting model a quadratic
mixed-integer programming model (QMIP). The QMIP is a NP-hard problem; the
algorithms and solution methods for this class of problems are also discussed. The
issues of preparing the analytic data (financial datamarts) for this family of portfolio
planning problems are examined. We finally present computational results which
provide some indication of the state-of-the-art in the solution of portfolio optimisation
problems
