Fractional learning algorithms are trending in signal processing and adaptive filtering recently. However, it is unclear whether the proclaimed superiority over conventional algorithms is well-grounded or is a myth as their performance has never been extensively analyzed. In this article, a rigorous analysis of fractional variants of the least mean squares and steepest descent algorithms is performed. Some critical schematic kinks in fractional learning algorithms are identified. Their origins and consequences on the performance of the learning algorithms are discussed and swift ready-witted remedies are proposed. Apposite numerical experiments are conducted to discuss the convergence and efficiency of the fractional learning algorithms in stochastic environments.Comment: 29 pages, 6 figure

    Get PDF
Fractional calculus tools have been exploited to effectively model variety of engineering, physics and applied sciences problems. The concept of fractional derivative has been incorporated in the optimization process of least mean square (LMS) iterative adaptive method. This study exploits the recently introduced enhanced fractional derivative based LMS (EFDLMS) for parameter estimation of power signal formed by the combination of different sinusoids. The EFDLMS addresses the issue of fractional extreme points and provides faster convergence speed. The performance of EFDLMS is evaluated in detail by taking different levels of noise in the composite sinusoidal signal as well as considering various fractional orders in the EFDLMS. Simulation results reveal that the EDFLMS is faster in convergence speed than the conventional LMS (i.e., EFDLMS for unity fractional order)

This paper investigates the time--domain response of nabla discrete fractional order systems by exploring several useful properties of the nabla discrete Laplace transform and the discrete Mittag--Leffler function. In particular, we establish two fundamental properties of a nabla discrete fractional order system with nonzero initial instant: i) the existence and uniqueness of the system time--domain response; and ii) the dynamic behavior of the zero input response. Finally, one numerical example is provided to show the validity of the theoretical results.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

Estimation-based synthesis of H∞-optimal adaptive FIR filtersfor filtered-LMS problems

    Get PDF
This paper presents a systematic synthesis procedure for H∞-optimal adaptive FIR filters in the context of an active noise cancellation (ANC) problem. An estimation interpretation of the adaptive control problem is introduced first. Based on this interpretation, an H∞ estimation problem is formulated, and its finite horizon prediction (filtering) solution is discussed. The solution minimizes the maximum energy gain from the disturbances to the predicted (filtered) estimation error and serves as the adaptation criterion for the weight vector in the adaptive FIR filter. We refer to this adaptation scheme as estimation-based adaptive filtering (EBAF). We show that the steady-state gain vector in the EBAF algorithm approaches that of the classical (normalized) filtered-X LMS algorithm. The error terms, however, are shown to be different. Thus, these classical algorithms can be considered to be approximations of our algorithm. We examine the performance of the proposed EBAF algorithm (both experimentally and in simulation) in an active noise cancellation problem of a one-dimensional (1-D) acoustic duct for both narrowband and broadband cases. Comparisons to the results from a conventional filtered-LMS (FxLMS) algorithm show faster convergence without compromising steady-state performance and/or robustness of the algorithm to feedback contamination of the reference signal

Fractional gradient methods via ψ-Hilfer derivative

Motivated by the increasing of practical applications in fractional calculus, we study the classical gradient method under the perspective of the ψ\psi-Hilfer derivative. This allows us to cover in our study several definitions of fractional derivatives that are found in the literature. The convergence of the ψ\psi-Hilfer continuous fractional gradient method is studied both for strongly and non-strongly convex cases. Using a series representation of the target function, we develop an algorithm for the ψ\psi-Hilfer fractional order gradient method. The numerical method obtained by truncating higher-order terms was tested and analyzed using benchmark functions. Considering variable order differentiation and optimizing the step size, the ψ\psi-Hilfer fractional gradient method shows better results in terms of speed and accuracy. Our results generalize previous works in the literature.publishe

Discrete fractional order systems have attracted more and more attention in recent years. Nabla Laplace transform is an important tool to deal with the problem of nabla discrete fractional order systems, but there is still much room for its development. Adaptive Interference Mitigation in GPS Receivers

Satellite navigation systems (GNSS) are among the most complex radio-navigation systems, providing positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) information. A growing number of public sector and commercial applications rely on the GNSS PNT service to support business growth, technical development, and the day-to-day operation of technology and socioeconomic systems. As GNSS signals have inherent limitations, they are highly vulnerable to intentional and unintentional interference. GNSS signals have spectral power densities far below ambient thermal noise. Consequently, GNSS receivers must meet high standards of reliability and integrity to be used within a broad spectrum of applications. GNSS receivers must employ effective interference mitigation techniques to ensure robust, accurate, and reliable PNT service. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Adaptive Notch Filter (ANF), a precorrelation mitigation technique that can be used to excise Continuous Wave Interference (CWI), hop-frequency and chirp-type interferences from GPS L1 signals. To mitigate unwanted interference, state-of-the-art ANFs typically adjust a single parameter, the notch centre frequency, and zeros are constrained extremely close to unity. Because of this, the notch centre frequency converges slowly to the target frequency. During this slow converge period, interference leaks into the acquisition block, thus sabotaging the operation of the acquisition block. Furthermore, if the CWI continuously hops within the GPS L1 in-band region, the subsequent interference frequency is locked onto after a delay, which means constant interference occurs in the receiver throughout the delay period. This research contributes to the field of interference mitigation at GNSS's receiver end using adaptive signal processing, predominately for GPS. This research can be divided into three stages. I first designed, modelled and developed a Simulink-based GPS L1 signal simulator, providing a homogenous test signal for existing and proposed interference mitigation algorithms. Simulink-based GPS L1 signal simulator provided great flexibility to change various parameters to generate GPS L1 signal under different conditions, e.g. Doppler Shift, code phase delay and amount of propagation degradation. Furthermore, I modelled three acquisition schemes for GPS signals and tested GPS L1 signals acquisition via coherent and non-coherent integration methods. As a next step, I modelled different types of interference signals precisely and implemented and evaluated existing adaptive notch filters in MATLAB in terms of Carrier to Noise Density (\u1d436/\u1d4410), Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), Peak Degradation Metric, and Mean Square Error (MSE) at the output of the acquisition module in order to create benchmarks. Finally, I designed, developed and implemented a novel algorithm that simultaneously adapts both coefficients in lattice-based ANF. Mathematically, I derived the full-gradient term for the notch's bandwidth parameter adaptation and developed a framework for simultaneously adapting both coefficients of a lattice-based adaptive notch filter. I evaluated the performance of existing and proposed interference mitigation techniques under different types of interference signals. Moreover, I critically analysed different internal signals within the ANF structure in order to develop a new threshold parameter that resets the notch bandwidth at the start of each subsequent interference frequency. As a result, I further reduce the complexity of the structural implementation of lattice-based ANF, allowing for efficient hardware realisation and lower computational costs. It is concluded from extensive simulation results that the proposed fully adaptive lattice-based provides better interference mitigation performance and superior convergence properties to target frequency compared to traditional ANF algorithms. It is demonstrated that by employing the proposed algorithm, a receiver is able to operate with a higher dynamic range of JNR than is possible with existing methods. This research also presents the design and MATLAB implementation of a parameterisable Complex Adaptive Notch Filer (CANF). Present analysis on higher order CANF for detecting and mitigating various types of interference for complex baseband GPS L1 signals. In the end, further research was conducted to suppress interference in the GPS L1 signal by exploiting autocorrelation properties and discarding some portion of the main lobe of the GPS L1 signal. It is shown that by removing 30% spectrum of the main lobe, either from left, right, or centre, the GPS L1 signal is still acquirable

This paper presents a novel wavelet kernel neural network (WKNN) with wavelet kernel function. It is applicable in online learning with adaptive parameters and is applied on parameters tuning of fractional-order PID (FOPID) controller, which could handle time delay problem of the complex control system. Combining the wavelet function and the kernel function, the wavelet kernel function is adopted and validated the availability for neural network. Compared to the conservative wavelet neural network, the most innovative character of the WKNN is its rapid convergence and high precision in parameters updating process. Furthermore, the integrated pressurized water reactor (IPWR) system is established by RELAP5, and a novel control strategy combining WKNN and fuzzy logic rule is proposed for shortening controlling time and utilizing the experiential knowledge sufficiently. Finally, experiment results verify that the control strategy and controller proposed have the practicability and reliability in actual complicated system
