Post-production of holoscopic 3D image
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University LondonHoloscopic 3D imaging also known as “Integral imaging” was first proposed by Lippmann in 1908. It facilitates a promising technique for creating full colour spatial image that exists in space. It promotes a single lens aperture for recording spatial images of a real scene, thus it offers omnidirectional motion parallax and true 3D
depth, which is the fundamental feature for digital refocusing. While stereoscopic and multiview 3D imaging systems simulate human eye technique, holoscopic 3D imaging system mimics fly’s eye technique, in which
viewpoints are orthographic projection. This system enables true 3D representation of a real scene in space, thus it offers richer spatial cues compared to stereoscopic 3D and multiview 3D systems. Focus has been the greatest challenge since the beginning of photography. It is becoming even more critical in film production where focus pullers are finding it difficult to get the right focus with camera resolution becoming increasingly higher. Holoscopic 3D imaging enables the user to carry out re/focusing in post-production. There have been three main types of digital refocusing methods namely Shift and Integration, full resolution, and full resolution with blind. However, these methods suffer from artifacts and unsatisfactory resolution in the final resulting image. For instance the artifacts are in the form of blocky and blurry pictures, due to unmatched boundaries. An upsampling method is proposed that improves the resolution of the resulting image of shift and integration approach. Sub-pixel adjustment of elemental images including “upsampling technique” with smart filters are proposed to reduce the artifacts, introduced by full resolution with blind method as well as to improve both image quality and resolution of the final rendered image. A novel 3D object extraction method is proposed that takes advantage of disparity, which is also applied to generate stereoscopic 3D images from holoscopic 3D
image. Cross correlation matching algorithm is used to obtain the disparity map from the disparity information and the desirable object is then extracted. In addition, 3D image conversion algorithm is proposed for the generation of stereoscopic and multiview 3D images from both unidirectional and omnidirectional holoscopic 3D images, which facilitates 3D content reformation
An in Depth Review Paper on Numerous Image Mosaicing Approaches and Techniques
Image mosaicing is one of the most important subjects of research in computer vision at current. Image mocaicing requires the integration of direct techniques and feature based techniques. Direct techniques are found to be very useful for mosaicing large overlapping regions, small translations and rotations while feature based techniques are useful for small overlapping regions. Feature based image mosaicing is a combination of corner detection, corner matching, motion parameters estimation and image stitching.Furthermore, image mosaicing is considered the process of obtaining a wider field-of-view of a scene from a sequence of partial views, which has been an attractive research area because of its wide range of applications, including motion detection, resolution enhancement, monitoring global land usage, and medical imaging. Numerous algorithms for image mosaicing have been proposed over the last two decades.In this paper the authors present a review on different approaches for image mosaicing and the literature over the past few years in the field of image masaicing methodologies. The authors take an overview on the various methods for image mosaicing.This review paper also provides an in depth survey of the existing image mosaicing algorithms by classifying them into several groups. For each group, the fundamental concepts are first clearly explained. Finally this paper also reviews and discusses the strength and weaknesses of all the mosaicing groups
Surface Appearance Estimation from Video Sequences
The realistic virtual reproduction of real world objects using Computer Graphics techniques requires the accurate acquisition and reconstruction of both 3D geometry and surface appearance. Unfortunately, in several application contexts, such as Cultural Heritage (CH), the reflectance acquisition can be very challenging due to the type of object to acquire and the digitization conditions. Although several methods have been proposed for the acquisition of object reflectance, some intrinsic limitations still make its acquisition a complex task for CH artworks: the use of specialized instruments (dome, special setup for camera and light source, etc.); the need of highly controlled acquisition environments, such as a dark room; the difficulty to extend to objects of arbitrary shape and size; the high level of expertise required to assess the quality of the acquisition.
The Ph.D. thesis proposes novel solutions for the acquisition and the estimation of the surface appearance in fixed and uncontrolled lighting conditions with several degree of approximations (from a perceived near diffuse color to a SVBRDF), taking advantage of the main features that
differentiate a video sequences from an unordered photos collections: the temporal coherence; the data redundancy; the easy of the acquisition, which allows acquisition of many views of the object in a short time. Finally, Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) is an example of
widely used technology for the acquisition of the surface appearance in the CH field, even if limited to single view Reflectance Fields of nearly flat objects. In this context, the thesis addresses also two important issues in RTI usage: how to provide better and more flexible virtual inspection capabilities with a set of operators that improve the perception of details, features and overall shape of the artwork; how to increase the possibility to disseminate this data and to support remote visual inspection of both scholar and ordinary public
Optimising additive manufacturing for fine art sculpture and digital restoration of archaeological artefacts
Additive manufacturing (AM) has shown itself to be beneficial in many
application areas, including product design and manufacture, medical models
and prosthetics, architectural modelling and artistic endeavours. For some of
these applications, coupling AM with reverse engineering (RE) enables the
utilisation of data from existing 3D shapes. This thesis describes the
application of AM and RE within sculpture manufacture, in order to optimise
the process chains for sculpture reproduction and relic conservation and
restoration. This area poses particular problems since the original artefacts
can often be fragile and inaccessible, and the finishing required on the AM
replicas is both complex and varied. Several case studies within both
literature and practical projects are presented, which cover essential
knowledge of producing large scale sculptures from an original models as well
as a wide range of artefact shapes and downstream finishing techniques. The
combination of digital technologies and traditional art requires interdisciplinary
knowledge across engineering and fine art. Also, definitions and requirements
(e.g. ‘accuracy’), can be applied as both engineering and artistic terms when
specifications and trade-offs are being considered. The thesis discusses the
feasibility for using these technologies across domains, and explores the
potential for developing new market opportunities for AM. It presents and
analyses a number of case study projects undertaken by the author with a
view to developing cost and time models for various processes used. These
models have then been used to develop a series of "process maps", which
enable users of AM in this area to decide upon the optimum process route to
follow, under various circumstances. The maps were validated and user
feedback obtained through the execution of two further sculpture
manufacturing projects. The thesis finishes with conclusions about the
feasibility of the approach, its constraints, the pros and cons of adopting AM in
this area and recommendations for future research
Digital Image Access & Retrieval
The 33th Annual Clinic on Library Applications of Data Processing, held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in March of 1996, addressed the theme of "Digital Image Access & Retrieval."
