Guidance, navigation and control of multirotors
Aplicat embargament des de la data de defensa fins el dia 31 de desembre de 2021This thesis presents contributions to the Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) systems for multirotor vehicles by applying and developing diverse control techniques and machine learning theory with innovative results. The aim of the thesis is to obtain a GNC system able to make the vehicle follow predefined paths while avoiding obstacles in the vehicle's route. The system must be adaptable to different paths, situations and missions, reducing the tuning effort and parametrisation of the proposed approaches. The multirotor platform, formed by the Asctec Hummingbird quadrotor vehicle, is studied and described in detail. A complete mathematical model is obtained and a freely available and open simulation platform is built. Furthermore, an autopilot controller is
designed and implemented in the real platform. The control part is focused on the path following problem. That is, following a predefined path in space without any time constraint. Diverse control-oriented and geometrical algorithms are studied, implemented and compared. Then, the geometrical algorithms are improved by obtaining adaptive approaches that do not need any parameter tuning. The adaptive geometrical approaches are developed by means of Neural Networks. To end up, a deep reinforcement learning approach is developed to solve the path following problem. This approach implements the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient algorithm. The resulting approach is trained in a realistic multirotor simulator and tested in real experiments with success. The proposed approach is able to accurately follow a path while adapting the vehicle's velocity depending on the path's shape. In the navigation part, an obstacle detection system based on the use of a LIDAR sensor is implemented. A model of the sensor is derived and included in the simulator. Moreover, an approach for treating the sensor data to eliminate the possible ground detections is developed. The guidance part is focused on the reactive path planning problem. That is, a path planning algorithm that is able to re-plan the trajectory online if an unexpected event, such as detecting an obstacle in the vehicle's route, occurs. A deep reinforcement learning approach for the reactive obstacle avoidance problem is developed. This approach implements the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient algorithm. The developed deep reinforcement learning agent is trained and tested in the realistic simulation platform. This agent is combined with the path following agent and the rest of the elements developed in the thesis obtaining a GNC system that is able to follow different types of paths while avoiding obstacle in the vehicle's route.Aquesta tesi doctoral presenta diverses contribucions relaciones amb els sistemes de Guiat, Navegació i Control (GNC) per a vehicles multirrotor, aplicant i desenvolupant diverses tècniques de control i de machine learning amb resultats innovadors. L'objectiu principal de la tesi és obtenir un sistema de GNC capaç de dirigir el vehicle perquè segueixi una trajectòria predefinida mentre evita els obstacles que puguin aparèixer en el recorregut del vehicle. El sistema ha de ser adaptable a diferents trajectòries, situacions i missions, reduint l'esforç realitzat en l'ajust i la parametrització dels mètodes proposats. La plataforma experimental, formada pel cuadricòpter Asctec Hummingbird, s'estudia i es descriu en detall. S'obté un model matemàtic complet de la plataforma i es desenvolupa una eina de simulació, la qual és de codi lliure. A més, es dissenya un controlador autopilot i s'implementa en la plataforma real. La part de control està enfocada al problema de path following. En aquest problema, el vehicle ha de seguir una trajectòria predefinida en l'espai sense cap tipus de restricció temporal. S'estudien, s'implementen i es comparen diversos algoritmes de control i geomètrics de path following. Després, es milloren els algoritmes geomètrics usant xarxes neuronals per convertirlos en algoritmes adaptatius. Per finalitzar, es desenvolupa un mètode de path following basat en tècniques d'aprenentatge per reforç profund (deep Reinforcement learning). Aquest mètode implementa l'algoritme Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient. L'agent intel. ligent resultant és entrenat en un simulador realista de multirotors i validat en la plataforma experimental real amb èxit. Els resultats mostren que l'agent és capaç de seguir de forma precisa la trajectòria de referència adaptant la velocitat del vehicle segons la curvatura del recorregut. A la part de navegació, s'implementa un sistema de detecció d'obstacles basat en l'ús d'un sensor LIDAR. Es deriva un model del sensor i aquest s'inclou en el simulador. A més, es desenvolupa un mètode per tractar les mesures del sensor per eliminar les possibles deteccions del terra. Pel que fa a la part de guiatge, aquesta està focalitzada en el problema de reactive path planning. És a dir, un algoritme de planificació de trajectòria que és capaç de re-planejar el recorregut del vehicle a l'instant si algun esdeveniment inesperat ocorre, com ho és la detecció d'un obstacle en el recorregut del vehicle. Es desenvolupa un mètode basat en aprenentatge per reforç profund per l'evasió d'obstacles. Aquest mètode implementa l'algoritme Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient. L'agent d'aprenentatge per reforç s'entrena i valida en un simulador de multirotors realista. Aquest agent es combina amb l'agent de path following i la resta d'elements desenvolupats en la tesi per obtenir un sistema GNC capaç de seguir diferents tipus de trajectòries, evadint els obstacles que estiguin en el recorregut del vehicle.Esta tesis doctoral presenta varias contribuciones relacionas con los sistemas de Guiado, Navegación y Control (GNC) para vehículos multirotor, aplicando y desarrollando diversas técnicas de control y de machine learning con resultados innovadores. El objetivo principal de la tesis es obtener un sistema de GNC capaz de dirigir el vehículo para que siga una trayectoria predefinida mientras evita los obstáculos que puedan aparecer en el recorrido del vehículo. El sistema debe ser adaptable a diferentes trayectorias, situaciones y misiones, reduciendo el esfuerzo realizado en el ajuste y la parametrización de los métodos propuestos.
La plataforma experimental, formada por el cuadricoptero Asctec Hummingbird, se estudia y describe en detalle. Se obtiene un modelo matemático completo de la plataforma y se desarrolla una herramienta de simulación, la cual es de código libre. Además, se diseña un controlador autopilot, el cual es implementado en la plataforma real.
La parte de control está enfocada en el problema de path following. En este problema, el vehículo debe seguir una trayectoria predefinida en el espacio tridimensional sin ninguna restricción temporal
Se estudian, implementan y comparan varios algoritmos de control y geométricos de path following. Luego, se mejoran los algoritmos geométricos usando redes neuronales para convertirlos en algoritmos adaptativos. Para finalizar, se desarrolla un método de path following basado en técnicas de aprendizaje por refuerzo profundo (deep reinforcement learning). Este método
implementa el algoritmo Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient. El agente inteligente resultante es entrenado en un simulador realista de multirotores y validado en la plataforma experimental real con éxito. Los resultados muestran que el agente es capaz de seguir de forma precisa la trayectoria de referencia adaptando la velocidad del vehículo según la curvatura del recorrido.
En la parte de navegación se implementa un sistema de detección de obstáculos basado en el uso de un sensor LIDAR. Se deriva un modelo del sensor y este se incluye en el simulador. Además, se desarrolla un método para tratar las medidas del sensor para eliminar las posibles detecciones
del suelo.
En cuanto a la parte de guiado, está focalizada en el problema de reactive path planning. Es decir, un algoritmo de planificación de trayectoria que es capaz de re-planear el recorrido del vehículo al instante si ocurre algún evento inesperado, como lo es la detección de un obstáculo en el recorrido del vehículo. Se desarrolla un método basado en aprendizaje por refuerzo profundo para la evasión de obstáculos. Este implementa el algoritmo Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient.
El agente de aprendizaje por refuerzo se entrena y valida en un simulador de multirotors realista.
Este agente se combina con el agente de path following y el resto de elementos desarrollados en la tesis para obtener un sistema GNC capaz de seguir diferentes tipos de trayectorias evadiendo los obstáculos que estén en el recorrido del vehículo.Postprint (published version
INTEROPERABILITY FOR MODELING AND SIMULATION IN MARITIME EXTENDED FRAMEWORK
This thesis reports on the most relevant researches performed during the years of the Ph.D. at the Genova University and within the Simulation Team. The researches have been performed according to M&S well known recognized standards. The studies performed on interoperable simulation cover all the environments of the Extended Maritime Framework, namely Sea Surface, Underwater, Air, Coast & Land, Space and Cyber Space. The applications cover both the civil and defence domain. The aim is to demonstrate the potential of M&S applications for the Extended Maritime Framework, applied to innovative unmanned vehicles as well as to traditional assets, human personnel included. A variety of techniques and methodology have been fruitfully applied in the researches, ranging from interoperable simulation, discrete event simulation, stochastic simulation, artificial intelligence, decision support system and even human behaviour modelling
Distributed Control for Collective Behaviour in Micro-unmanned Aerial Vehicles
Full version unavailable due to 3rd party copyright restrictions.The work presented herein focuses on the design of distributed autonomous controllers for collective behaviour of Micro-unmanned Aerial Vehicles (MAVs).
Two alternative approaches to this topic are introduced: one based upon the Evolutionary Robotics (ER) paradigm, the other one upon flocking principles. Three computer simulators have been developed in order to carry out the required experiments, all of them having their focus on the modelling of fixed-wing aircraft flight dynamics. The employment of fixed-wing aircraft rather than the omni-directional robots typically employed in collective robotics significantly increases the complexity of the challenges that an autonomous controller has to face. This is mostly due to the strict motion constraints associated with fixed-wing platforms, that require a high degree of accuracy by the controller.
Concerning the ER approach, the experimental setups elaborated have resulted in controllers that have been evolved in simulation with the following capabilities: (1) navigation across unknown environments, (2) obstacle avoidance, (3) tracking of a moving target, and (4) execution of cooperative and coordinated behaviours based on implicit communication strategies.
The design methodology based upon flocking principles has involved tests on computer simulations and subsequent experimentation on real-world robotic platforms. A customised implementation of Reynolds’ flocking algorithm has been developed and successfully validated through flight tests performed with the swinglet MAV.
It has been notably demonstrated how the Evolutionary Robotics approach could be successfully extended to the domain of fixed-wing aerial robotics, which has never received a great deal of attention in the past. Mission-based mobility models for UAV networks
Las redes UAV han atraído la atención de los investigadores durante la última década. Las numerosas posibilidades que ofrecen los sistemas single-UAV aumentan considerablemente al usar múltiples UAV. Sin embargo, el gran potencial del sistema multi-UAV viene con un precio: la complejidad de controlar todos los aspectos necesarios para garantizar que los UAVs cumplen la misión que se les ha asignado. Ha habido numerosas investigaciones dedicadas a los sistemas multi-UAV en el campo de la robótica en las cuales se han utilizado grupos de UAVs para diferentes aplicaciones. Sin embargo, los aspectos relacionados con la red que forman estos sistemas han comenzado a reclamar un lugar entre la comunidad de investigación y han hecho que las redes de UAVs se consideren como un nuevo paradigma entre las redes multi-salto.
La investigación de redes de UAVs, de manera similar a otras redes multi-salto, se divide principalmente en dos categorías: i) modelos de movilidad que capturan la movilidad de la red, y ii) algoritmos de enrutamiento. Ambas categorías han heredado muchos algoritmos que pertenecían a las redes MANET, que fueron el primer paradigma de redes multi-salto que atrajo la atención de los investigadores. Aunque hay esfuerzos de investigación en curso que proponen soluciones para ambas categorías, el número de modelos de movilidad y algoritmos de enrutamiento específicos para redes UAV es limitado. Además, en el caso de los modelos de movilidad, las soluciones existentes propuestas son simplistas y apenas representan la movilidad real de un equipo de UAVs, los cuales se utilizan principalmente en operaciones orientadas a misiones, en la que cada UAV tiene asignados movimientos específicos.
Esta tesis propone dos modelos de movilidad basados en misiones para una red de UAVs que realiza dos operaciones diferentes. El escenario elegido en el que se desarrollan las misiones corresponde con una región en la que ha ocurrido, por ejemplo, un desastre natural. La elección de este tipo de escenario se debe a que en zonas de desastre, la infraestructura de comunicaciones comúnmente está dañada o totalmente destruida. En este tipo de situaciones, una red de UAVs ofrece la posibilidad de desplegar rápidamente una red de comunicaciones.
El primer modelo de movilidad, llamado dPSO-U, ha sido diseñado para capturar la movilidad de una red UAV en una misión con dos objetivos principales: i) explorar el área del escenario para descubrir las ubicaciones de los nodos terrestres, y ii) hacer que los UAVs converjan de manera autónoma a los grupos en los que se organizan los nodos terrestres (también conocidos como clusters). El modelo de movilidad dPSO-U se basa en el conocido algoritmo particle swarm optimization (PSO), considerando los UAV como las partículas del algoritmo, y también utilizando el concepto de valores dinámicos para la inercia, el local best y el neighbour best de manera que el modelo de movilidad tenga ambas capacidades: la de exploración y la de convergencia. El segundo modelo, denominado modelo de movilidad Jaccard-based, captura la movilidad de una red UAV que tiene asignada la misión de proporcionar servicios de comunicación inalámbrica en un escenario de mediano tamaño. En este modelo de movilidad se ha utilizado una combinación del virtual forces algorithm (VFA), de la distancia Jaccard entre cada par de UAVs y metaheurísticas como hill climbing y simulated annealing, para cumplir los dos objetivos de la misión: i) maximizar el número de nodos terrestres (víctimas) que se encuentran bajo el área de cobertura inalámbrica de la red UAV, y ii) mantener la red UAV como una red conectada, es decir, evitando las desconexiones entre UAV.
Se han realizado simulaciones exhaustivas con herramientas software específicamente desarrolladas para los modelos de movilidad propuestos. También se ha definido un conjunto de métricas para cada modelo de movilidad. Estas métricas se han utilizado para validar la capacidad de los modelos de movilidad propuestos de emular los movimientos de una red UAV en cada misión.UAV networks have attracted the attention of the research community in the last decade. The numerous capabilities of single-UAV systems increase considerably by using multiple UAVs. The great potential of a multi-UAV system comes with a price though: the complexity of controlling all the aspects required to guarantee that the UAV team accomplish the mission that it has been assigned. There have been numerous research works devoted to multi-UAV systems in the field of robotics using UAV teams for different applications. However, the networking aspects of multi-UAV systems started to claim a place among the research community and have made UAV networks to be considered as a new paradigm among the multihop ad hoc networks.
UAV networks research, in a similar manner to other multihop ad hoc networks, is mainly divided into two categories: i) mobility models that capture the network mobility, and ii) routing algorithms. Both categories have inherited previous algorithms mechanisms that originally belong to MANETs, being these the first multihop networking paradigm attracting the attention of researchers. Although there are ongoing research efforts proposing solutions for the aforementioned categories, the number of UAV networks-specific mobility models and routing algorithms is limited. In addition, in the case of the mobility models, the existing solutions proposed are simplistic and barely represent the real mobility of a UAV team, which are mainly used in missions-oriented operations.
This thesis proposes two mission-based mobility models for a UAV network carrying out two different operations over a disaster-like scenario. The reason for selecting a disaster scenario is because, usually, the common communication infrastructure is malfunctioning or completely destroyed. In these cases, a UAV network allows building a support communication network which is rapidly deployed.
The first mobility model, called dPSO-U, has been designed for capturing the mobility of a UAV network in a mission with two main objectives: i) exploring the scenario area for discovering the location of ground nodes, and ii) making the UAVs to autonomously converge to the groups in which the nodes are organized (also referred to as clusters). The dPSO-U mobility model is based on the well-known particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO), considering the UAVs as the particles of the algorithm, and also using the concept of dynamic inertia, local best and neighbour best weights so the mobility model can have both abilities: exploration and convergence. The second one, called Jaccard-based mobility model, captures the mobility of a UAV network that has been assigned with the mission of providing wireless communication services in a medium-scale scenario. A combination of the virtual forces algorithm (VFA), the Jaccard distance between each pair of UAVs and metaheuristics such as hill climbing or simulated annealing have been used in this mobility model in order to meet the two mission objectives: i) to maximize the number of ground nodes (i.e. victims) under the UAV network wireless coverage area, and ii) to maintain the UAV network as a connected network, i.e. avoiding UAV disconnections.
Extensive simulations have been performed with software tools that have been specifically developed for the proposed mobility models. Also, a set of metrics have been defined and measured for each mobility model. These metrics have been used for validating the ability of the proposed mobility models to emulate the movements of a UAV network in each mission
MODELLING VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT FOR ADVANCED NAVAL SIMULATION
This thesis proposes a new virtual simulation environment designed as element of an interoperable federation of simulator to support the investigation of complex scenarios over the Extended Maritime Framework (EMF).
Extended Maritime Framework is six spaces environment (Underwater, Water surface, Ground, Air, Space, and Cyberspace) where parties involved in Joint Naval Operations act.
The amount of unmanned vehicles involved in the simulation arise the importance of the Communication modelling, thus the relevance of Cyberspace.
The research is applied to complex cases (one applied to deep waters and one to coast and littoral protection) as examples to validate this approach; these cases involve different kind of traditional assets (e.g. satellites, helicopters, ships, submarines, underwater sensor infrastructure, etc.) interact dynamically and collaborate with new autonomous systems (i.e. AUV, Gliders, USV and UAV).
The use of virtual simulation is devoted to support validation of new concepts and investigation of collaborative engineering solutions by providing a virtual representation of the current situation; this approach support the creation of dynamic interoperable immersive framework that could support training for Man in the Loop, education and tactical decision introducing the Man on the Loop concepts. The research and development of the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles requires continuous testing so a time effective approach can result a very useful tool. In this context the simulation can be useful to better understand the behaviour of Unmanned Vehicles and to avoid useless experimentations and their costs finding problems before doing them.
This research project proposes the creation of a virtual environment with the aim to see and understand a Joint Naval Scenario. The study will be focusing especially on the integration of Autonomous Systems with traditional assets; the proposed simulation deals especially with collaborative operation involving different types of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV), Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) and UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). The author develops an interoperable virtual simulation devoted to present the overall situation for supervision considering also the sensor capabilities, communications and mission effectiveness that results dependent of the different asset interaction over a complex heterogeneous network.
The aim of this research is to develop a flexible virtual simulation solution as crucial element of an HLA federation able to address the complexity of Extended Maritime Framework (EMF). Indeed this new generation of marine interoperable simulation is a strategic advantage for investigating the problems related to the operational use of autonomous systems and to finding new ways to use them respect to different scenarios.
The research deal with the creation of two scenarios, one related to military operations and another one on coastal and littoral protection where the virtual simulation propose the overall situation and allows to navigate into the virtual world considering the complex physics affecting movement, perception, interaction and communication.
By this approach, it becomes evident the capability to identify, by experimental analysis within the virtual world, the new solutions in terms of engineering and technological configuration of the different systems and vehicles as well as new operational models and tactics to address the specific mission environment.
The case of study is a maritime scenario with a representation of heterogeneous network frameworks that involves multiple vehicles both naval and aerial including AUVs, USVs, gliders, helicopter, ships, submarines, satellite, buoys and sensors.
For the sake of clarity aerial communications will be represented divided from underwater ones. A connection point for the latter will be set on the keel line of surface vessels representing communication happening via acoustic modem.
To represent limits in underwater communications, underwater signals have been considerably slowed down in order to have a more realistic comparison with aerial ones. A maximum communication distance is set, beyond which no communication can take place.
To ensure interoperability the HLA Standard (IEEE 1516 evolved) is adopted to federate other simulators so to allow its extensibility for other case studies.
Two different scenarios are modelled in 3D visualization: Open Water and Port Protection.
The first one aims to simulate interactions between traditional assets in Extended Maritime Framework (EMF) such as satellite, navy ships, submarines, NATO Research Vessels (NRVs), helicopters, with new generation unmanned assets as AUV, Gliders, UAV, USV and the mutual advantage the subjects involved in the scenario can have; in other word, the increase in persistence, interoperability and efficacy.
The second scenario models the behaviour of unmanned assets, an AUV and an USV, patrolling a harbour to find possible threats. This aims to develop an algorithm to lead patrolling path toward an optimum, guaranteeing a high probability of success in the safest way reducing human involvement in the scenario.
End users of the simulation face a graphical 3D representation of the scenario where assets would be represented. He can moves in the scenario through a Free Camera in Graphic User Interface (GUI) configured to entitle users to move around the scene and observe the 3D sea scenario. In this way, players are able to move freely in the synthetic environment in order to choose the best perspective of the scene.
The work is intended to provide a valid tool to evaluate the defencelessness of on-shore and offshore critical infrastructures that could includes the use of new technologies to take care of security best and preserve themselves against disasters both on economical and environmental ones

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is a research field in robotics which is in high demand in recent years, although there still exist many unanswered questions. In contrast, to the human operated aerial vehicles, it is still far less used to the fact that people are dubious about flying in or flying an unmanned vehicle. It is all about giving the control right to the computer (which is the Artificial Intelligence) for making decisions based on the situation like human do but this has not been easy to make people understand that it’s safe and to continue the enhancement on it. These days there are many types of UAVs available in the market for consumer use, for applications like photography to play games, to map routes, to monitor buildings, for security purposes and much more. Plus, these UAVs are also being widely used by the military for surveillance and for security reasons. One of the most commonly used consumer product is a quadcopter or quadrotor.
The research carried out used modern tools (i.e., SolidWorks, Java Net Beans and MATLAB/Simulink) to model controls system for Quadcopter UAV with haptic control system to control the quadcopter in a virtual simulation environment and in real time environment. A mathematical model for the controlling the quadcopter in simulations and real time environments were introduced. Where, the design methodology for the quadcopter was defined. This methodology was then enhanced to develop a virtual simulation and real time environments for simulations and experiments. Furthermore, the haptic control was then implemented with designed control system to control the quadcopter in virtual simulation and real time experiments.
By using the mathematical model of quadcopter, PID & PD control techniques were used to model the control setup for the quadcopter altitude and motion controls as work progressed. Firstly, the dynamic model is developed using a simple set of equations which evolves further by using complex control & mathematical model with precise function of actuators and aerodynamic coefficients Figure5-7. The presented results are satisfying and shows that flight experiments and simulations of the quadcopter control using haptics is a novel area of research which helps perform operations more successfully and give more control to the operator when operating in difficult environments. By using haptic accidents can be minimised and the functional performance of the operator and the UAV will be significantly enhanced. This concept and area of research of haptic control can be further developed accordingly to the needs of specific applications
