    Multiscale methods for evolution problems

    In this thesis we develop and analyze generalized finite element methods for time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs). The focus lies on equations with rapidly varying coefficients, for which the classical finite element method is insufficient, as it requires a mesh fine enough to resolve the data. The framework for the novel methods are based on the localized orthogonal decomposition (LOD) technique. The main idea of this method is to construct a modified finite element space whose basis functions contain information about the variations in the coefficients, hence yielding better approximation properties. At first, the localized orthogonal decomposition framework is extended to the strongly damped wave equation, where two different highly varying coefficients are present (Paper~I). The dependency of the solution on the different coefficients vary with time, which the proposed method accounts for automatically. Then we consider a parabolic equation where the diffusion is rapidly varying in both time and space (Paper~II). Here, the framework is extended so that the modified finite element space uses space-time basis functions that contain the information of the diffusion coefficient. Furthermore, we study wave propagation problems posed on spatial networks (Paper~III). Such systems are characterized by a matrix with large variations inherited from the underlying network. For this purpose, an LOD based approach adapted to general matrix systems is considered. Finally, we analyze the framework for a parabolic stochastic PDE with multiscale characteristics (Paper~IV). In all papers we prove error estimates for the methods, and confirm the theoretical findings with numerical examples

    Representational task formats and problem solving strategies in kinematics and work

    Previous studies have reported that students employed different problem solving approaches when presented with the same task structured with different representations. In this study, we explored and compared students’ strategies as they attempted tasks from two topical areas, kinematics and work. Our participants were 19 engineering students taking a calculus-based physics course. The tasks were presented in linguistic, graphical, and symbolic forms and requested either a qualitative solution or a value. The analysis was both qualitative and quantitative in nature focusing principally on the characteristics of the strategies employed as well as the underlying reasoning for their applications. A comparison was also made for the same student’s approach with the same kind of representation across the two topics. Additionally, the participants’ overall strategies across the different tasks, in each topic, were considered. On the whole, we found that the students prefer manipulating equations irrespective of the representational format of the task. They rarely recognized the applicability of a ‘‘qualitative’’ approach to solve the problem although they were aware of the concepts involved. Even when the students included visual representations in their solutions, they seldom used these representations in conjunction with the mathematical part of the problem. Additionally, the students were not consistent in their approach for interpreting and solving problems with the same kind of representation across the two topical areas. The representational format, level of prior knowledge, and familiarity with a topic appeared to influence their strategies, their written responses, and their ability to recognize qualitative ways to attempt a problem. The nature of the solution does not seem to impact the strategies employed to handle the problem

    Information Recovery In Behavioral Networks

    In the context of agent based modeling and network theory, we focus on the problem of recovering behavior-related choice information from origin-destination type data, a topic also known under the name of network tomography. As a basis for predicting agents' choices we emphasize the connection between adaptive intelligent behavior, causal entropy maximization and self-organized behavior in an open dynamic system. We cast this problem in the form of binary and weighted networks and suggest information theoretic entropy-driven methods to recover estimates of the unknown behavioral flow parameters. Our objective is to recover the unknown behavioral values across the ensemble analytically, without explicitly sampling the configuration space. In order to do so, we consider the Cressie-Read family of entropic functionals, enlarging the set of estimators commonly employed to make optimal use of the available information. More specifically, we explicitly work out two cases of particular interest: Shannon functional and the likelihood functional. We then employ them for the analysis of both univariate and bivariate data sets, comparing their accuracy in reproducing the observed trends.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 4 table

    Application of Fredholm integral equations inverse theory to the radial basis function approximation problem

    This paper reveals and examines the relationship between the solution and stability of Fredholm integral equations and radial basis function approximation or interpolation. The underlying system (kernel) matrices are shown to have a smoothing property which is dependent on the choice of kernel. Instead of using the condition number to describe the ill-conditioning, hence only looking at the largest and smallest singular values of the matrix, techniques from inverse theory, particularly the Picard condition, show that it is understanding the exponential decay of the singular values which is critical for interpreting and mitigating instability. Results on the spectra of certain classes of kernel matrices are reviewed, verifying the exponential decay of the singular values. Numerical results illustrating the application of integral equation inverse theory are also provided and demonstrate that interpolation weights may be regarded as samplings of a weighted solution of an integral equation. This is then relevant for mapping from one set of radial basis function centers to another set. Techniques for the solution of integral equations can be further exploited in future studies to find stable solutions and to reduce the impact of errors in the data

    On a continuation approach in Tikhonov regularization and its application in piecewise-constant parameter identification

    We present a new approach to convexification of the Tikhonov regularization using a continuation method strategy. We embed the original minimization problem into a one-parameter family of minimization problems. Both the penalty term and the minimizer of the Tikhonov functional become dependent on a continuation parameter. In this way we can independently treat two main roles of the regularization term, which are stabilization of the ill-posed problem and introduction of the a priori knowledge. For zero continuation parameter we solve a relaxed regularization problem, which stabilizes the ill-posed problem in a weaker sense. The problem is recast to the original minimization by the continuation method and so the a priori knowledge is enforced. We apply this approach in the context of topology-to-shape geometry identification, where it allows to avoid the convergence of gradient-based methods to a local minima.
