A practical approach to network-based processing

    Get PDF
The usage of general-purpose processors externally attached to routers to play virtually the role of active coprocessors seems a safe and cost-effective approach to add active network capabilities to existing routers. This paper reviews this router-assistant way of making active nodes, addresses the benefits and limitations of this technique, and describes a new platform based on it using an enhanced commercial router. The features new to this type of architecture are transparency, IPv4 and IPv6 support, and full control over layer 3 and above. A practical experience with two applications for path characterization and a transport gateway managing multi-QoS is described. Most of this work has been funded by the IST project GCAP (Global Communication Architecture and Protocols for new QoS services over IPv6 networks) IST-1999-10 504. Further development and application to practical scenarios is being supported by IST project Opium (Open Platform for Integration of UMTS Middleware) IST-2001-36063 and the Spanish MCYT under projects TEL99-0988-C02-01 and AURAS TIC2001-1650-C02-01.Publicad

Analysis of the impact of FEC techniques on a multicast video streaming service over LTE

The proceeding at: European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC 2015), took place in June 29/July 2, 2015, in Paris, France. In a multicast video streaming service the same multimedia content is sent to a mass audience using only one multicast stream. In multicast video streaming over a cellular network, due to the nature of the multicast communication, from a source to multiple recipients, and due to the characteristics of the radio channel, different for each receiver, transmission errors are addressed at the application level by using Forward Error Correction (FEC) techniques. However, in order to protect the communication over the radio channel, FEC techniques are also applied at the physical layer. Another important technique to improve the communication of the radio channel is the use of a single-frequency network. This paper analyzes the performance of a video streaming service over a cellular network taking into account the combined impact of different factors that affect the transmission, both the physical deployment of the service and the two levels of FEC.This work was supported in part by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation (IN-NPACTO subprogram), LTExtreme project (IPT-2012-0525-430000).Publicad

Adaptive Applications over Active Networks: Case Study on Layered Multicast

peer reviewedIn this paper we study the potential and limitations of active networks in the context of adaptive applications. We present a survey of active networking research applied to adaptive applications, and a case study on a layered multicast active application. This active application is a congestion control protocol that selectively discards data in the active routers, and prunes multicast tree branches affected by persistent congestion. Our first results indicate that active networks can indeed help such an application to adapt to heterogeneous receivers, with a minimum amount of state overhead, equivalent to that of a single IP multicast group
