Evolution of statistical analysis in empirical software engineering research: Current state and steps forward
Software engineering research is evolving and papers are increasingly based
on empirical data from a multitude of sources, using statistical tests to
determine if and to what degree empirical evidence supports their hypotheses.
To investigate the practices and trends of statistical analysis in empirical
software engineering (ESE), this paper presents a review of a large pool of
papers from top-ranked software engineering journals. First, we manually
reviewed 161 papers and in the second phase of our method, we conducted a more
extensive semi-automatic classification of papers spanning the years 2001--2015
and 5,196 papers. Results from both review steps was used to: i) identify and
analyze the predominant practices in ESE (e.g., using t-test or ANOVA), as well
as relevant trends in usage of specific statistical methods (e.g.,
nonparametric tests and effect size measures) and, ii) develop a conceptual
model for a statistical analysis workflow with suggestions on how to apply
different statistical methods as well as guidelines to avoid pitfalls. Lastly,
we confirm existing claims that current ESE practices lack a standard to report
practical significance of results. We illustrate how practical significance can
be discussed in terms of both the statistical analysis and in the

Semi-Supervised Recurrent Neural Network for Adverse Drug Reaction Mention Extraction
Social media is an useful platform to share health-related information due to
its vast reach. This makes it a good candidate for public-health monitoring
tasks, specifically for pharmacovigilance. We study the problem of extraction
of Adverse-Drug-Reaction (ADR) mentions from social media, particularly from
twitter. Medical information extraction from social media is challenging,
mainly due to short and highly information nature of text, as compared to more
technical and formal medical reports.
Current methods in ADR mention extraction relies on supervised learning
methods, which suffers from labeled data scarcity problem. The State-of-the-art
method uses deep neural networks, specifically a class of Recurrent Neural
Network (RNN) which are Long-Short-Term-Memory networks (LSTMs)
\cite{hochreiter1997long}. Deep neural networks, due to their large number of
free parameters relies heavily on large annotated corpora for learning the end
task. But in real-world, it is hard to get large labeled data, mainly due to
heavy cost associated with manual annotation. Towards this end, we propose a
novel semi-supervised learning based RNN model, which can leverage unlabeled
data also present in abundance on social media. Through experiments we
demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, achieving state-of-the-art

WEST: A Web Browser for Small Terminals
We describe WEST, a WEb browser for Small Terminals, that aims to solve some of the problems associated with accessing web pages on hand-held devices. Through a novel combination of text reduction and focus+context visualization, users can access web pages from a very limited display environment, since the system will provide an overview of the contents of a web page even when it is too large to be displayed in its entirety. To make maximum use of the limited resources available on a typical hand-held terminal, much of the most demanding work is done by a proxy server, allowing the terminal to concentrate on the task of providing responsive user interaction. The system makes use of some interaction concepts reminiscent of those defined in the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), making it possible to utilize the techniques described here for WAP-compliant devices and services that may become available in the near future
