A hierarchical Mamdani-type fuzzy modelling approach with new training data selection and multi-objective optimisation mechanisms: A special application for the prediction of mechanical properties of alloy steels
In this paper, a systematic data-driven fuzzy modelling methodology is proposed, which allows to construct Mamdani fuzzy models considering both accuracy (precision) and transparency (interpretability) of fuzzy systems. The new methodology employs a fast hierarchical clustering algorithm to generate an initial fuzzy model efficiently; a training data selection mechanism is developed to identify appropriate and efficient data as learning samples; a high-performance Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) based multi-objective optimisation mechanism is developed to further improve the fuzzy model in terms of both the structure and the parameters; and a new tolerance analysis method is proposed to derive the confidence bands relating to the final elicited models. This proposed modelling approach is evaluated using two benchmark problems and is shown to outperform other modelling approaches. Furthermore, the proposed approach is successfully applied to complex high-dimensional modelling problems for manufacturing of alloy steels, using ‘real’ industrial data. These problems concern the prediction of the mechanical properties of alloy steels by correlating them with the heat treatment process conditions as well as the weight percentages of the chemical compositions
Bat Algorithm: Literature Review and Applications
Bat algorithm (BA) is a bio-inspired algorithm developed by Yang in 2010 and
BA has been found to be very efficient. As a result, the literature has
expanded significantly in the last 3 years. This paper provides a timely review
of the bat algorithm and its new variants. A wide range of diverse applications
and case studies are also reviewed and summarized briefly here. Further

A particle swarm optimisation-based Grey prediction model for thermal error compensation on CNC machine tools
Thermal errors can have a significant effect on CNC machine tool accuracy. The thermal error compensation system has become a cost-effective method of improving machine tool accuracy in recent years. In the presented paper, the Grey relational analysis (GRA) was employed to obtain the similarity degrees between fixed temperature sensors and the thermal response of the CNC machine tool structure. Subsequently, a new Grey model with convolution integral GMC(1, N) is used to design a thermal prediction model. To improve the accuracy of the proposed model, the generation coefficients of GMC(1, N) are calibrated using an adaptive Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) algorithm. The results demonstrate good agreement between the experimental and predicted thermal error. Finally, the capabilities and the limitations of the model for thermal error compensation have been discussed.

Forecasting bus passenger flows by using a clustering-based support vector regression approach
As a significant component of the intelligent transportation system, forecasting bus passenger
flows plays a key role in resource allocation, network planning, and frequency setting. However, it remains
challenging to recognize high fluctuations, nonlinearity, and periodicity of bus passenger flows due to
varied destinations and departure times. For this reason, a novel forecasting model named as affinity
propagation-based support vector regression (AP-SVR) is proposed based on clustering and nonlinear
simulation. For the addressed approach, a clustering algorithm is first used to generate clustering-based
intervals. A support vector regression (SVR) is then exploited to forecast the passenger flow for each
cluster, with the use of particle swarm optimization (PSO) for obtaining the optimized parameters. Finally,
the prediction results of the SVR are rearranged by chronological order rearrangement. The proposed model
is tested using real bus passenger data from a bus line over four months. Experimental results demonstrate
that the proposed model performs better than other peer models in terms of absolute percentage error and
mean absolute percentage error. It is recommended that the deterministic clustering technique with stable
