Toward Pedagogy of "Play" for the Mande Bala

A theoretical model is proposed that posits "play" as both the long-term goal of bala learning, and as the means through which the short-term steps toward that goal can best be achieved. Play is defined in two different ways. In the first sense it is an orchestrating of means and ends in which means are at the centre of interest. In this sense, play is a goal of bala learning. In the second sense, play is defined (using the framework of Applied Behaviour Analysis) as: activities that (a) are inherently reinforcing (and not inherently punishing), and (b) do not eventuate extinction, escape, or avoidance. In this sense, play is conceived as one possible means through which to achieve pedagogical goals. The case is made that Mande bala music is especially well suited to a pedagogy of "play" owing to its intrinsic (musical) characteristics. The pedagogical framework for the study is James Popham and Eva Baker's "empirical model of instruction," which allows for a systematic evaluation of pedagogical methods. Although the model proposed is supported by empirical evidence and has a strong rational underpinning, the model itself is not tested in the present study, but rather, is herein articulated (via illustrative case studies depicting the learning of various bala patterns through digitally mediated meansbooks, CDs, DVDs, etc.) An argument is built to support the notion that in comparison with traditional, immersion-based pedagogical modalities, the digital mediation of bala teaching eventuates a pedagogical loss, but that this pedagogical loss can be attenuated through a more "playful" pedagogical approach

Music Information Retrieval Meets Music Education

This paper addresses the use of Music Information Retrieval (MIR) techniques in music education and their integration in learning software. A general overview of systems that are either commercially available or in research stage is presented. Furthermore, three well-known MIR methods used in music learning systems and their state-of-the-art are described: music transcription, solo and accompaniment track creation, and generation of performance instructions. As a representative example of a music learning system developed within the MIR community, the Songs2See software is outlined. Finally, challenges and directions for future research are described

Post – Harmony Sangposangan As Dynamic Existence of Madurese People. In Digital era This paper is a result of anthropology research by using cultural studies perspectives. This article, comprehensively, discuss; 1) musical relation between Western and traditional music in sangposangan; 2) a kind of ‘post-harmony’ sangposangan by using musicology analysis through musical text of Angling Madura song. The result of study shows an encounter between western and Madurese traditional music in sangposangan music which can produce a new musical entity (harmony of other).  Post-harmony sangposangan is manifested in dynamic composition which are; 1) dangdut composition in EDM syle, and 2) contrast change from dangdut koplo to pure dangdut. Post-harmony can be read as intuition, emotion, sense and instinct which can drive creative process of sangposangan music. It does not come from rigid notation system but it is constructed from rhythm of Madurese people’s life.ABSTRAKTulisan ini merupakan hasil penelitian antropologi musik dengan menggunakan perspektif kajian budaya.
