    An Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) Approach on Fuzzy System Optimization Problem

    Optimizing the membership functions of a fuzzy system can be viewed as a system identification problem for a nonlinear dynamic system. Basically, we can view the optimization of fuzzy membership functions as a weighted least-squares minimization problem, where the error vector is the difference between the fuzzy system outputs and the target values for those outputs. The extended Kalman filter algorithm is a good choice to solve this system identification problem, not only because it is a derivative-based algorithm that is suitable to solve the weighted least-squares minimization problem, but also because of its appealing predictor-corrector feature for nonlinear system model. In this paper, we present an extended Kalman filter approach to optimize the membership functions of the inputs and outputs of the fuzzy controller. The effect of the measurement noise covariance R on the convergence of the fuzzy controller is also investigated. Experimental results show that the optimized fuzzy controller achieves significant improvement on performance. In addition, the smaller the measurement noise covariance R is, the faster the optimized fuzzy controller would converge

    A hybrid EKF and switching PSO algorithm for joint state and parameter estimation of lateral flow immunoassay models

The official published can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2012 IEEEIn this paper, a hybrid extended Kalman filter (EKF) and switching particle swarm optimization (SPSO) algorithm is proposed for jointly estimating both the parameters and states of the lateral flow immunoassay model through available short time-series measurement. Our proposed method generalizes the well-known EKF algorithm by imposing physical constraints on the system states. Note that the state constraints are encountered very often in practice that give rise to considerable difficulties in system analysis and design. The main purpose of this paper is to handle the dynamic modeling problem with state constraints by combining the extended Kalman filtering and constrained optimization algorithms via the maximization probability method. More specifically, a recently developed SPSO algorithm is used to cope with the constrained optimization problem by converting it into an unconstrained optimization one through adding a penalty term to the objective function. The proposed algorithm is then employed to simultaneously identify the parameters and states of a lateral flow immunoassay model.     Review on Battery State Estimation and Management Solutions for Next-Generation Connected Vehicles

    The transport sector is tackling the challenge of reducing vehicle pollutant emissions and carbon footprints by means of a shift to electrified powertrains, i.e., battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). However, electrified vehicles pose new issues associated with the design and energy management for the efficient use of onboard energy storage systems (ESSs). Thus, strong attention should be devoted to ensuring the safety and efficient operation of the ESSs. In this framework, a dedicated battery management system (BMS) is required to contemporaneously optimize the battery’s state of charge (SoC) and to increase the battery’s lifespan through tight control of its state of health (SoH). Despite the advancements in the modern onboard BMS, more detailed data-driven algorithms for SoC, SoH, and fault diagnosis cannot be implemented due to limited computing capabilities. To overcome such limitations, the conceptualization and/or implementation of BMS in-cloud applications are under investigation. The present study hence aims to produce a new and comprehensive review of the advancements in battery management solutions in terms of functionality, usability, and drawbacks, with specific attention to cloud-based BMS solutions as well as SoC and SoH prediction and estimation. Current gaps and challenges are addressed considering V2X connectivity to fully exploit the latest cloud-based solutions

    AN INTELLIGENT NAVIGATION SYSTEM FOR AN AUTONOMOUS UNDERWATER VEHICLE

    The work in this thesis concerns with the development of a novel multisensor data fusion (MSDF) technique, which combines synergistically Kalman filtering, fuzzy logic and genetic algorithm approaches, aimed to enhance the accuracy of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) navigation system, formed by an integration of global positioning system and inertial navigation system (GPS/INS). The Kalman filter has been a popular method for integrating the data produced by the GPS and INS to provide optimal estimates of AUVs position and attitude. In this thesis, a sequential use of a linear Kalman filter and extended Kalman filter is proposed. The former is used to fuse the data from a variety of INS sensors whose output is used as an input to the later where integration with GPS data takes place. The use of an adaptation scheme based on fuzzy logic approaches to cope with the divergence problem caused by the insufficiently known a priori filter statistics is also explored. The choice of fuzzy membership functions for the adaptation scheme is first carried out using a heuristic approach. Single objective and multiobjective genetic algorithm techniques are then used to optimize the parameters of the membership functions with respect to a certain performance criteria in order to improve the overall accuracy of the integrated navigation system. Results are presented that show that the proposed algorithms can provide a significant improvement in the overall navigation performance of an autonomous underwater vehicle navigation.     A novel online LS-SVM approach for regression and classification

    In this paper, a novel online least squares support vector machine approach is proposed for classification and regression problems. Gaussian kernel function is used due to its strong generalization capability. The contribution of the paper is twofold. As the first novelty, all parameters of the SVM including the kernel width parameter σ are trained simultaneously when a new sample arrives. Unscented Kalman filter is adopted to train the parameters since it avoids the sub-optimal solutions caused by linearization in contrast to extended Kalman filter. The second novelty is the variable size moving window by an intelligent update strategy for the support vector set. This provides that SVM model captures the dynamics of data quickly while not letting it become clumsy due to the big amount of useless or out-of-date support vector data. Simultaneous training of the kernel parameter by unscented Kalman filter and intelligent update of support vector set provide significant performance using small amount of support vector data for both classification and system identification application results. © 201

    SoC estimation for lithium-ion batteries : review and future challenges

    ABSTRACT: Energy storage emerged as a top concern for the modern cities, and the choice of the lithium-ion chemistry battery technology as an effective solution for storage applications proved to be a highly efficient option. State of charge (SoC) represents the available battery capacity and is one of the most important states that need to be monitored to optimize the performance and extend the lifetime of batteries. This review summarizes the methods for SoC estimation for lithium-ion batteries (LiBs). The SoC estimation methods are presented focusing on the description of the techniques and the elaboration of their weaknesses for the use in on-line battery management systems (BMS) applications. SoC estimation is a challenging task hindered by considerable changes in battery characteristics over its lifetime due to aging and to the distinct nonlinear behavior. This has led scholars to propose different methods that clearly raised the challenge of establishing a relationship between the accuracy and robustness of the methods, and their low complexity to be implemented. This paper publishes an exhaustive review of the works presented during the last five years, where the tendency of the estimation techniques has been oriented toward a mixture of probabilistic techniques and some artificial intelligence
