Interaction effects on prediction of children weight at school entry using model averaging

    Get PDF
Model selection introduce uncertainty to the model building process, therefore model averaging was introduced as an alternative to overcome the problem of underestimate of standards error in model selection. This research also focused on using selection criteria between Corrected Akaike's Information Criteria (AICC) and Bayesian Information Criteria (BIC) as weight for model averaging when involving interaction effects. Mean squared error of prediction (MSE(P)) was used in order to determine the best model for model averaging. Gateshead Millennium Study (GMS) data on children weight used to illustrate the comparison between AICC and BIC. The results showed that model selection criterion AICC performs better than BIC when there are small sample and large number of parameters included in the model. The presence of interaction variable in the model is not significant compared to the main factor variables due to the lower coefficient value of interaction variables. In conclusion, interaction variables give less information to the model as it coefficient value is lower than main factor

SMEs account for a large proportion and play an important role in the development of each country in the world, including India. The globalization will bring many advantages for enterprises however SMEs will face fierce competition at the local, national and International level. In order to maintain and promote the important role of SMEs in the context of increased competition, SMEs have to change and adopt new technologies. E-commerce and digital technologies are bringing opportunities to help SMEs improve their competitiveness, narrow the gap with big enterprises thanks to their fairness and flexibility of the digital business environment.       According to UNIDO (2017), India is one of the countries successfully applying e-commerce to SMEs. Contributing to this success is the important role of the Indian government. Therefore, this paper focuses on researching the application of e-commerce to SMEs in terms of the role of government in promoting and creating an ecosystem for SMEs and e-commerce development

An improved negative selection algorithm based on the hybridization of cuckoo search and differential evolution for anomaly detection

The biological immune system (BIS) is characterized by networks of cells, tissues, and organs communicating and working in synchronization. It also has the ability to learn, recognize, and remember, thus providing the solid foundation for the development of Artificial Immune System (AIS). Since the emergence of AIS, it has proved itself as an area of computational intelligence. Real-Valued Negative Selection Algorithm with Variable-Sized Detectors (V-Detectors) is an offspring of AIS and demonstrated its potentials in the field of anomaly detection. The V-Detectors algorithm depends greatly on the random detectors generated in monitoring the status of a system. These randomly generated detectors suffer from not been able to adequately cover the non-self space, which diminishes the detection performance of the V-Detectors algorithm. This research therefore proposed CSDE-V-Detectors which entail the use of the hybridization of Cuckoo Search (CS) and Differential Evolution (DE) in optimizing the random detectors of the V-Detectors. The DE is integrated with CS at the population initialization by distributing the population linearly. This linear distribution gives the population a unique, stable, and progressive distribution process. Thus, each individual detector is characteristically different from the other detectors. CSDE capabilities of global search, and use of LŽevy flight facilitates the effectiveness of the detector set in the search space. In comparison with V-Detectors, cuckoo search, differential evolution, support vector machine, artificial neural network, našıve bayes, and k-NN, experimental results demonstrates that CSDE-V-Detectors outperforms other algorithms with an average detection rate of 95:30% on all the datasets. This signifies that CSDE-V-Detectors can efficiently attain highest detection rates and lowest false alarm rates for anomaly detection. Thus, the optimization of the randomly detectors of V-Detectors algorithm with CSDE is proficient and suitable for anomaly detection tasks

The way that organizations explore the Internet has been the focus of a substantial body of scientific studies and non-academic reflection. The main goal of this study is to analyze the potential of the internet as a mode of internationalization and the factors that influence the results of the adoption of this mean to access foreign markets. For this purpose, we examine the determinants of the level of international sales made via internet estimating an ordered probit model. The results show that the importance of previous experience in using the internet and developing international activity, together with the level of internet marketing budget , the level of investment on internet sophistication, the firm dimension, the business age and the type pf activity are variables that determine the results obtain in the international sales trough the internet.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Nigeria was described as the fastest growing telecoms nation in Africa and the third in the World. The country had experienced a phenomenal growth from a teledensity of 0.49 in 2000 to 25.22 in 2007. This trend has brought about a monumental development in the major sectors of the economy, such as banking, telecoms and commerce in general. This paper presents the level of adoption of ICT in the banking sector and investigates the prospects of m-Commerce in Nigeria based on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis. Findings revealed that all banks in Nigeria offer e-Banking services and about 52% of the offer some forms of m-Banking services. The banks and the telecoms operators have enormous potentials and opportunities for m-Commerce but the level of patronage, quality of cell phones, lack of basic infrastructure and security issues pose a major threat to its wide scale implementation

The use of time for entertainment has increased participation both at home and outside and, in our days, we look at the proliferation of a wide range of activities that are included in the leisure economy: tourism, catering, shopping, sports, entertainment... In this sense, a lot of studies agree that the activities related to leisure time of individuals with strong potential for growth as amusement parks, restaurants, tour operators... and, above all, new retail formats that are configured as great business opportunities. Consequently, the main objective of this text is to relate some of the main activities that are encompassed in the new economy of leisure. And as a specific example to analyze the complementarity between trade and tourism in a particular case: Shopping in Seville. Firstly, there exists a theoretical review of the phenomenon of leisure within the needs of individuals and further expenditure is oriented towards this set of activities. Then a classification of the activities offered for the entertainment of individuals paying particular attention to the main Spanish companies involved in some of these sectors and, secondly, the role of shopping as one of the leading suppliers of trade and leisure. Finally, exercise has articulated a dual approach to complementarity between the commercial and tourist activities, first of all, we performed a quantification of non resident consumption by commercial areas, and afterwards, it has developed a classification of regions in terms of its commercial and tourism potential through a cluster analysis

SMEs, electronically-mediated working and data security: cause for concern?

Security of data is critical to the operations of firms. Without the ability to store, process and transmit data securely, operations may be compromised, with the potential for serious consequences to trading integrity. Thus the role that electronically-mediated working plays in business today and its dependency on data security is of critical interest, especially in light of the fact that much of this communication is based on the use of open networks (i.e. the Internet). This paper discusses findings from a 'WestFocus' survey on electronically-mediated working and telework amongst a sample of SMEs located in West London and adjacent counties in South-Eastern England in order to highlight the problems that such practice raises in terms of data security. Data collection involved a telephone survey undertaken in early 2006 of 378 firms classified into four industrial sectors ('Media', 'Logistics', 'Internet Services' and 'Food Processing'). After establishing how ICTs and the Internet are being exploited as business applications for small firms, data security practice is explored on the basis of sector and size with a focus on telework. The paper goes on to highlight areas of concern in terms of data security policy and training practice. Findings show some sector and size influences.WestFocus* under the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF 2

Enablers and barriers in German online food retailing

    Get PDF
This article discusses enablers and barriers in online food retailing in Germany. The German food retail sector is one of the largest in Europe; however, its online or Internet provision for customers lags way behind the United Kingdom and France. Prior research has considered the demand-consumer side of this dyad; however, little has been done on the online food supply-retail side. This article addresses that gap through exploratory empirical research with three retailers, three logistics service providers, and a marketing agency. There is good potential in this market but costs of fulfilment and service quality currently represent major barriers
