    Identification of Clear Text Data Obfuscated Within Active File Slack

    Obfuscating text on a hard drive can be done by utilizing the slack space of files. Text can be inserted into the area between the end of the file data and the New Technology File System (NTFS) cluster (the smallest drive space allocated to a file) that in which the file is stored, the data is hidden from traditional methods of viewing. If the hard drive is large, how does a digital forensics expert know where to look to find text that has been obfuscated? Searching through a large hard drive could take up a substantial amount of time that the expert possibly could not justify. If the digital forensics expert lacks the knowledge on how to properly search a hard drive for obfuscated clear text using data carving concepts, how will the obfuscated clear text be located on the drive and identified? To address this, an algorithm was proposed and tested, which resulted in the successful identification of clear text data in slack space with a percentage average of 99.31% identified. This algorithm is a reliable form of slack space analysis which can be used in conjunction with other data extraction methods to see the full scope of evidence on a drive

    Integrated Access to a Large Medical Literature Database

    Project INCARD (INtegrated CARdiology Database) has adapted the CODER (COmposite Document Expert/effective/extended Retrieval) system and LEND (Large External Network object oriented Database) to provide integrated access to a large collection of bibliographic citations, a full text document in cardiology, and a large thesaurus of medical terms. CODER is a distributed expert-based information system that incorporates techniques from artificial intelligence, information retrieval, and human-computer interaction to support effective access to information and knowledge bases. LEND is an object-oriented database which incorporates techniques from information retrieval and database systems to support complex objects, hypertext/hypermedia and semantic network operations efficiently with very large sets of data. LEND stores the CED lexicon, MeSH thesaurus, MEDLARS bibliographics records on cardiology, and the syllabus for the topic Abnormal Human Biology (Cardiology Section) taught at Columbia University. Together, CODER/LEND allow efficient and flexible access to all of this information while supporting rapid "intelligent" searching and hypertext-style browsing by both novice and expert users.     Thesaurus-assisted search term selection and query expansion: a review of user-centred studies

    This paper provides a review of the literature related to the application of domain-specific thesauri in the search and retrieval process. Focusing on studies which adopt a user-centred approach, the review presents a survey of the methodologies and results from empirical studies undertaken on the use of thesauri as sources of term selection for query formulation and expansion during the search process. It summaries the ways in which domain-specific thesauri from different disciplines have been used by various types of users and how these tools aid users in the selection of search terms. The review consists of two main sections covering, firstly studies on thesaurus-aided search term selection and secondly those dealing with query expansion using thesauri. Both sections are illustrated with case studies that have adopted a user-centred approach

    The Virtual Library Project1 at the Naval Surface Warfare Center/Carderock Division (NSWC/CD) is being developed to facilitate the incorporation and use of library documents via the Internet. These documents typically relate to the design and manufacture of ships for the U.S. Navy Fleet. As such, the libraries will store documents that contain not only text but also images, graphs and design configurations. Because of the dynamic nature of digital documents, particularly those related to design, rapid and effective cataloging of these documents becomes challenging. We conducted a research study to analyze the use of expert systems and intelligent agents to support the function of cataloging digital documents. This chapter provides an overview of past research in the use of expert systems and intelligent agents for cataloging digital documents and discusses our recommendations based on NSWC/CD’s requirements

    In TREC2004, Dublin City University took part in three tracks, Terabyte (in collaboration with University College Dublin), Genomic and Novelty. In this paper we will discuss each track separately and present separate conclusions from this work. In addition, we present a general description of a text retrieval engine that we have developed in the last year to support our experiments into large scale, distributed information retrieval, which underlies all of the track experiments described in this document

    Simulation in manufacturing and business: A review

    Copyright @ 2009 Elsevier B.V.This paper reports the results of a review of simulation applications published within peer-reviewed literature between 1997 and 2006 to provide an up-to-date picture of the role of simulation techniques within manufacturing and business. The review is characterised by three factors: wide coverage, broad scope of the simulation techniques, and a focus on real-world applications. A structured methodology was followed to narrow down the search from around 20,000 papers to 281. Results include interesting trends and patterns. For instance, although discrete event simulation is the most popular technique, it has lower stakeholder engagement than other techniques, such as system dynamics or gaming. This is highly correlated with modelling lead time and purpose. Considering application areas, modelling is mostly used in scheduling. Finally, this review shows an increasing interest in hybrid modelling as an approach to cope with complex enterprise-wide systems
