The primary reasons are the need to perform underwater intervention tasks that are dangerous for a diver and the need to perform underwater survey tasks that last for longer periods of time. Unmanned underwater vehicles can be divided into two categories. Most of the systems, today, that require a certain level of precision and dexterity are built as Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV). On the other hand, the systems that perform repetitive tasks are configured as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV). The objective of the thesis is to design a novel, cost-efficient, and fault-tolerant ROV that can hover and be used for shallow water investigation. In order to reduce the cost, the numbers of thrusters are minimized and internal actuators are used for steering the vehicle and stability in hovering mode. Also, the design is planned to be open for modification for further improvements that will enable the use of the vehicle for intervention tasks and studies. In this work, previously developed unmanned underwater vehicles are reviewed. Following this, the conceptual designs are created for the underwater vehicle and internal actuator designs are developed. Designed mechanisms are modeled in SolidWorks© and transferred to MATLAB© Simulink for hovering-mode control studies. Afterwards, to verify the simulation results, experiments are conducted with a seesaw mechanism by using LabVIEW© programming. Finally, results are given, discussed and future works are addressed

    A robust dynamic region-based control scheme for an autonomous underwater vehicle

    Intelligent control of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) requires a control scheme which is robust to external perturbations. These perturbations are highly uncertain and can prevent the AUV from accomplishing its mission. A well-known robust control called sliding mode control (SMC) and its development have been introduced. However, it produces a chattering effect which requires more energy. To overcome this problem, this paper presents a novel robust dynamic region-based control scheme. An AUV needs to be able not only to track a moving target as a region but also to position itself inside the region. The proposed controller is developed based on an adaptive sliding mode scheme. An adaptive element is useful for the AUV to attenuate the effect of external disturbances and also the chattering effect. Additionally, the application of the dynamic-region concept can reduce the energy demand. Simulations are performed to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller. Furthermore, a Lyapunov-like function is presented for stability analysis. It is demonstrated that the proposed controller works better then an adaptive sliding mode without the region boundary scheme and a fuzzy sliding mode controller

    Review on auto-depth control system for an unmanned underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) using intelligent controller

    This paper presents a review of auto-depth control system for an Unmanned Underwater Remotely operated Vehicle (ROV), focusing on the Artificial Intelligent Controller Techniques. Specifically, Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) is utilized in auto-depth control system for the ROV. This review covered recently published documents for auto-depth control of an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV). This paper also describes the control issues in UUV especially for the ROV, which has inspired the authors to develop a new technique for auto-depth control of the ROV, called the SIFLC. This technique was the outcome of an investigation and tuning of two parameters, namely the break point and slope for the piecewise linear or slope for the linear approximation. Hardware comparison of the same concepts of ROV design was also discussed. The ROV design is for smallscale, open frame and lower speed. The review on auto-depth control system for ROV, provides insights for readers to design new techniques and algorithms for auto-depth control

    An intelligent navigation system for an unmanned surface vehicle

    Merged with duplicate record 10026.1/2768 on 27.03.2017 by CS (TIS)A multi-disciplinary research project has been carried out at the University of Plymouth to design and develop an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) named ýpringer. The work presented herein relates to formulation of a robust, reliable, accurate and adaptable navigation system to enable opringei to undertake various environmental monitoring tasks. Synergistically, sensor mathematical modelling, fuzzy logic, Multi-Sensor Data Fusion (MSDF), Multi-Model Adaptive Estimation (MMAE), fault adaptive data acquisition and an user interface system are combined to enhance the robustness and fault tolerance of the onboard navigation system. This thesis not only provides a holistic framework but also a concourse of computational techniques in the design of a fault tolerant navigation system. One of the principle novelties of this research is the use of various fuzzy logic based MSDF algorithms to provide an adaptive heading angle under various fault situations for Springer. This algorithm adapts the process noise covariance matrix ( Q) and measurement noise covariance matrix (R) in order to address one of the disadvantages of Kalman filtering. This algorithm has been implemented in Spi-inger in real time and results demonstrate excellent robustness qualities. In addition to the fuzzy logic based MSDF, a unique MMAE algorithm has been proposed in order to provide an alternative approach to enhance the fault tolerance of the heading angles for Springer. To the author's knowledge, the work presented in this thesis suggests a novel way forward in the development of autonomous navigation system design and, therefore, it is considered that the work constitutes a contribution to knowledge in this area of study.     Fault tolerant control of a quadrotor using L-1 adaptive control

    Purpose – The growing use of small unmanned rotorcraft in civilian applications means that safe operation is increasingly important. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the fault tolerant properties to faults in the actuators of an L1 adaptive controller for a quadrotor vehicle. Design/methodology/approach – L1 adaptive control provides fast adaptation along with decoupling between adaptation and robustness. This makes the approach a suitable candidate for fault tolerant control of quadrotor and other multirotor vehicles. In the paper, the design of an L1 adaptive controller is presented. The controller is compared to a fixed-gain LQR controller. Findings – The L1 adaptive controller is shown to have improved performance when subject to actuator faults, and a higher range of actuator fault tolerance. Research limitations/implications – The control scheme is tested in simulation of a simple model that ignores aerodynamic and gyroscopic effects. Hence for further work, testing with a more complete model is recommended followed by implementation on an actual platform and flight test. The effect of sensor noise should also be considered along with investigation into the influence of wind disturbances and tolerance to sensor failures. Furthermore, quadrotors cannot tolerate total failure of a rotor without loss of control of one of the degrees of freedom, this aspect requires further investigation. Practical implications – Applying the L1 adaptive controller to a hexrotor or octorotor would increase the reliability of such vehicles without recourse to methods that require fault detection schemes and control reallocation as well as providing tolerance to a total loss of a rotor. Social implications – In order for quadrotors and other similar unmanned air vehicles to undertake many proposed roles, a high level of safety is required. Hence the controllers should be fault tolerant. Originality/value – Fault tolerance to partial actuator/effector faults is demonstrated using an L1 adaptive controller

    Adoption of vehicular ad hoc networking protocols by networked robots

    This paper focuses on the utilization of wireless networking in the robotics domain. Many researchers have already equipped their robots with wireless communication capabilities, stimulated by the observation that multi-robot systems tend to have several advantages over their single-robot counterparts. Typically, this integration of wireless communication is tackled in a quite pragmatic manner, only a few authors presented novel Robotic Ad Hoc Network (RANET) protocols that were designed specifically with robotic use cases in mind. This is in sharp contrast with the domain of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET). This observation is the starting point of this paper. If the results of previous efforts focusing on VANET protocols could be reused in the RANET domain, this could lead to rapid progress in the field of networked robots. To investigate this possibility, this paper provides a thorough overview of the related work in the domain of robotic and vehicular ad hoc networks. Based on this information, an exhaustive list of requirements is defined for both types. It is concluded that the most significant difference lies in the fact that VANET protocols are oriented towards low throughput messaging, while RANET protocols have to support high throughput media streaming as well. Although not always with equal importance, all other defined requirements are valid for both protocols. This leads to the conclusion that cross-fertilization between them is an appealing approach for future RANET research. To support such developments, this paper concludes with the definition of an appropriate working plan

    INTELLIGENT FAULT TOLERANT CONTROL SCHEMES FOR AUTONOMOUS UNDERWATER VEHICLES

    The area of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) is an increasingly important area of research, with AUVs being capable of handling a far wider range of missions than either an inhabited underwater vehicle or a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). One of the major drawbacks of such vehicles is the inability of their control systems to handle faults occurring within the vehicle during a mission. This study aims to develop enhancements to an existing control system in order to increase its fault tolerance to both sensor and actuator faults. Faults occurring within the sensors for both the yaw and roll channels of the AUV are considered. Novel fuzzy inference systems (FISs) are developed and tuned using both the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and simulated annealing tuning methods. These FISs allow the AUV to continue operating after a fault has occurred within the sensors. Faults occurring within the actuators which control the canards of the AUV and hence the yaw channel are also examined. Actuator recovery FISs capable of handling faults occurring within the actuators are developed using both the simulated annealing and tabu search methods of tuning FISs. The fault tolerance of the AUV is then further enhanced by the development of an error estimation FIS that is used to replace an error sensor. It concludes that the novel FISs designed and developed within the thesis provide an improved performance to both sensor and actuator faults in comparison to benchmark control systems. Therefore having these FISs embedded within the overall control scheme ensure the AUV is fault tolerant to a range of selected failures
