    Learning from life-logging data by hybrid HMM: a case study on active states prediction

    In this paper, we have proposed employing a hybrid classifier-hidden Markov model (HMM) as a supervised learning approach to recognize daily active states from sequential life-logging data collected from wearable sensors. We generate synthetic data from real dataset to cope with noise and incompleteness for training purpose and, in conjunction with HMM, propose using a multiobjective genetic programming (MOGP) classifier in comparison of the support vector machine (SVM) with variant kernels. We demonstrate that the system with either algorithm works effectively to recognize personal active states regarding medical reference. We also illustrate that MOGP yields generally better results than SVM without requiring an ad hoc kernel

    An evolutionary approach for determining Hidden Markov Model for medical image analysis

    Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is a technique highly capable of modelling the structure of an observation sequence. In this paper, HMM is used to provide the contextual information for detecting clinical signs present in diabetic retinopathy screen images. However, there is a need to determine a feature set that best represents the complexity of the data as well as determine an optimal HMM. This paper addresses these problems by automatically selecting the best feature set while evolving the structure and obtaining the parameters of a Hidden Markov Model. This novel algorithm not only selects the best feature set, but also identifies the topology of the HMM, the optimal number of states, as well as the initial transition probabilities. © 2012 IEEE

    A Survey on Emotion Recognition for Human Robot Interaction

    With the recent developments of technology and the advances in artificial intelligent and machine learning techniques, it becomes possible for the robot to acquire and show the emotions as a part of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). An emotional robot can recognize the emotional states of humans so that it will be able to interact more naturally with its human counterpart in different environments. In this article, a survey on emotion recognition for HRI systems has been presented. The survey aims to achieve two objectives. Firstly, it aims to discuss the main challenges that face researchers when building emotional HRI systems. Secondly, it seeks to identify sensing channels that can be used to detect emotions and provides a literature review about recent researches published within each channel, along with the used methodologies and achieved results. Finally, some of the existing emotion recognition issues and recommendations for future works have been outlined
