A Review on Sensor Node Placement Techniques in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Get PDF
One way to provide Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) with maximum coverage, maximum connectivity, minimum deployment cost and minimum energy consumption is through an effective planning mechanism in arranging an optimum number of sensor nodes. Proper planning will provide a cost-effective deployment by having optimal placements for the sensor nodes. Sensor node placement schemes are needed to accommodate the balance of coverage and energy consumption since closer sensor nodes not only reduces the energy consumption but will result in the network coverage becoming smaller. This paper critically reviews the research and development work done in sensor node placement. Based on the review, the design objectives that need to be considered are identified. Most of the work reviewed focused on two or three design objectives

Radio Co-location Aware Channel Assignments for Interference Mitigation in Wireless Mesh Networks

Designing high performance channel assignment schemes to harness the potential of multi-radio multi-channel deployments in wireless mesh networks (WMNs) is an active research domain. A pragmatic channel assignment approach strives to maximize network capacity by restraining the endemic interference and mitigating its adverse impact on network performance. Interference prevalent in WMNs is multi-faceted, radio co-location interference (RCI) being a crucial aspect that is seldom addressed in research endeavors. In this effort, we propose a set of intelligent channel assignment algorithms, which focus primarily on alleviating the RCI. These graph theoretic schemes are structurally inspired by the spatio-statistical characteristics of interference. We present the theoretical design foundations for each of the proposed algorithms, and demonstrate their potential to significantly enhance network capacity in comparison to some well-known existing schemes. We also demonstrate the adverse impact of radio co- location interference on the network, and the efficacy of the proposed schemes in successfully mitigating it. The experimental results to validate the proposed theoretical notions were obtained by running an exhaustive set of ns-3 simulations in IEEE 802.11g/n environments.Comment: Accepted @ ICACCI-201

In modern era WSN, data aggregation technique is the challenging area for researchers from long time. Numbers of researchers have proposed neural network (NN) and fuzzy logic based data aggregation methods in Wireless Environment. The main objective of this paper is to analyse the existing work on artificial intelligence (AI) based data aggregation techniques in WSNs. An attempt has been made to identify the strength and weakness of AI based techniques. In addition to this, a modified protocol is designed and developed. And its implementation also compared with other existing approaches ACO and PSO. Proposed approach is better in terms of network lifetime and throughput of the networks. In future an attempt can be made to overcome the existing challenges during data aggregation in WSN using different AI and Meta heuristic based techniques

Clustering is one of the operations in the wireless sensor network that offers both streamlined data routing services as well as energy efficiency. In this viewpoint, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) has already proved its effectiveness in enhancing clustering operation, energy efficiency, etc. However, PSO also suffers from a higher degree of iteration and computational complexity when it comes to solving complex problems, e.g., allocating transmittance energy to the cluster head in a dynamic network. Therefore, we present a novel, simple, and yet a cost-effective method that performs enhancement of the conventional PSO approach for minimizing the iterative steps and maximizing the probability of selecting a better clustered. A significant research contribution of the proposed system is its assurance towards minimizing the transmittance energy as well as receiving energy of a cluster head. The study outcome proved proposed a system to be better than conventional system in the form of energy efficiency

Wireless sensor network (WSN) is an evolving research topic with potential applications. In WSN, the nodes are spatially distributed and determining the path of transmission high challenging. Localization eases the path determining process between source and destination. The article, describes the localization techniques based on wireless sensor networks. Sensor network has been made viable by the convergence of Micro Electro- Mechanical Systems technology. The mobile anchor is used for optimizing the path planning location-aware mobile node. Two optimization algorithms have been used for reviewing the performacne. They are Grey Wolf Optimizer(GWO) and Whale Optimization Algorithm(WOA). The results show that WOA outperforms in maximizing the localization accuracy

In recent years, wireless sensor networks have became the effective solutions for a wide range of IoT applications. The major task of this network is data collection, which is the process of sensing the environment, collecting relevant data, and sending them to the server or BS. In this chapter, classification of data collection protocols are presented with the help of different parameters such as network lifetime, energy, fault tolerance, and latency. To achieve these parameters, different techniques such as multi-hop, clustering, duty cycling, network coding, aggregation, sink mobility, directional antennas, and cross-layer solutions have been analyzed. The drawbacks of these techniques are discussed. Finally, the future work for routing protocols in wireless sensor networks is discussed
