This study examined the influence of organizational structure on the quality of computerized accounting systems among small and medium enterprises in Nigeria. The method employed in the research was the survey methodology with the use of self-completed questionnaires administered to accounting/finance personnel, each from the sample of 370 firms selected from the population of 9,276 SMEs within the south-south region of Nigeria. The research data was analyzed using frequencies and the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation that was subjected to a t-transformation test. The results of the study indicate that there is a positive relationship between organizational structure and the quality of computerized accounting systems among SMEs, and that, overall, organizational structure has a positive influence on the quality of computerized accounting systems. This result implies that the form of organizational structure practiced by firms play significant role in determining the quality of their computerized accounting systems. Those managing SMEs as well as other practitioners and scholars would find the results of this study useful. The researcher has also suggested areas for further research that would help revalidate or extend the outcome of this study. Evaluation of Strategy-Structure Fit of Space and Missile Systems Center Detachment 11

    Get PDF
Activated June 1,1998, Space and Missile Systems Center Detachment 11, located in Colorado Springs, integrates system support management for the Satellite Launch Control System (SLCS), MlLSTAR, the Defense Meteorological Support Program (DMSP), the Space Based Infrared System (SBlRSl, and the Global Positioning System (GPS). The Detachment performs operational software maintenance, satellite systems engineering, space testing and evaluation, and technology master planning. Contemporary management theory asserts that the appropriate match of strategy and structure determines an organization\u27s level of performance. The Detachment is currently organized programmatically. The current programmatic organizational structure represents the physical manifestation of the Integrated Weapon System Management (lWSMl strategy and facilitates the vertical integration of all processes necessary to field, deploy, and maintain weapon/space systems. The rigid implementation of this strategy and the resulting structure impedes horizontal integration of similar processes and equipment across the various programs. However, the charter of the Detachment is to provide central integrated support for space systems capitalizing on opportunities for horizontal integration. This study finds that the macro-strategy of Air Force Materiel Command may create friction with the Detachment\u27s micro-strategy of providing central integrated support for space systems

The Influence of Organizational and Governance Structures on the Frequency of Management Skill Utilization of Community College Chief Executive Officers in the United States

    Get PDF
Community colleges are purported to be in the midst of a leadership crisis due to the impending retirements of chief executive officers (CEOs) and senior administrators over the next several years. Concurrently, the demands upon CEOs to effectively and efficiently manage their institutions are more critical now in an effort to balance the demands placed upon them by public policy and institutional stakeholders. The purpose of this research was to examine the influence of institutional context, governance and organizational structures, on the frequency with which CEOs utilized certain management skills. The study population was community college CEOs as identified by membership in the American Association of Community Colleges. Levels of each independent factor were identified though literature review and constituted a myriad of organizational and governance structures indicative of community colleges across the nation. Twenty-five management skills performed by CEOs were also identified through literature review, and, as the dependent factors, were measured on an anchored six-point rating scale. Comparative analysis on responses (n = 468) to the author-developed questionnaire was performed using multivariate analysis of variance at p \u3c .05. Significant differences sufficient to address the research questions were not found. Ancillary analysis of respondents’ comments suggests context, as defined by this study’s variables, does have influence on the management skills used by CEOs

Communication is a complicated field because of its multidimensional nature. Yet, it is the actual complication of communication that makes it attractive for researchers to study. Organizational communication literature includes a diverse field of interest. Among those the most commonly examined are: the distortion of information, information overload, feedback implementation, gatekeeping, etc. Another field of significant interest to investigate is the direction of communication. Information flow may many times may be an indicator of how communication is been developed in organizations and more specifically may indicate employees’ participation in the decision making process. This study examines the relationship among internal communication and employees’ engagement in decision making. Employees’ opinion is essential in order to reach an objective conclusion. For this reason qualitative research interviews was selected as the best possible media to reach the established goal. In depth interviews will be helpful to comprehend the functions of internal communication in Albania through the case study of Ministry of Education and the depending institutions. The qualitative analysis has shown that internal communication in Albanian Ministry of Education and the depending institutions is not developed with best possible way. According to the interviews, communication is mainly centralized, therefore, employees do not participate in the decision making process. Additionally, communication is also hampered by several other reasons such as lack of constant feedback, lack of information technology equipment, non-participation and non-organization of trainings related to communication issues. Internal communication in Albanian public sector demonstrate certain problems with the most important the non-influence of organizational members in decision making process. Internal communication in Albania needs to be improved primarily by enhancing employees’ engagement in organizations’ issues. Therefore, increasing demands are being placed on management to take the necessary actions and implement the required strategy in order to upturn the existing communication patterns and bring about effective results.fi=OpinnĂ€ytetyö kokotekstinĂ€ PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=LĂ€rdomsprov tillgĂ€ngligt som fulltext i PDF-format

The moderating roles of national culture and the country institutional profiles on the effect of market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation on the performance of banks in Jordan: An empirical investigation

    Get PDF
The primary purpose of the study was to extend Jaworski and Kohli\u27s (1993) market orientation (MO) model in the banking industry of Jordan. Specifically, the study (1) added entrepreneurial orientation (EO) as a second mediating variable with market orientation, (2) incorporated national culture and country institutional profile as moderators on the performance effects of MO and EO, and (3) replicated other relationships in the market orientation model of Jaworski and Kohli in the banking industry of Jordan. These moderating variables explained some of the discrepancies in the direct performance effects of MO and EO observed in international contexts. To accomplish these objectives, the study used the following instruments: Jaworski and Kohli\u27s (1993) scales of market orientation, Coven and Slevin\u27s (1989) scales of entrepreneurial orientation, Hofstede\u27s (1980) scale of national culture, and Busenitz, Gomez, and Spencer\u27s (2000) scale of country institutional profiles. The past two decades have witnessed great interest into two critical strategic organizational practices, market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation, which can enhance an organization\u27s capabilities to manage its environment and to perform well. Central to the interest in market orientation and entrepreneurship is their potential influence on organizations\u27 performance. As discrepant evidence has started to accumulate about the direct performance effects of market and entrepreneurial orientations, researchers have begun to explore the roles of various contingency variables on the influence of both market orientation and entrepreneurship on performance. Two such contingency variables that are increasingly encountered by transnational and national organizations are national culture and country institutional profile. In this regard, research suggests that, while pursuing market orientation to enhance performance, marketing managers ought to take into account the effects of national culture and country institutional profiles. Likewise, research suggests that the cross-national variations in the success of entrepreneurial activities may be accounted for by the differences in national culture and country institutional profiles. A national sample of 950 branch managers and senior management members from 475 bank branches listed in The 2003 Banks and Finance Institutions Directory in Jordan, were participated in this study. Responses were received from 507 participants, yielding a response rate of 53%. A host of statistical techniques were employed to test the hypotheses. These techniques include explanatory alpha, rotation factors analysis, and multivariate regression analysis. The findings of the study were as follows: (1) market orientation as well as entrepreneurial orientation are in their initial stages in the banking industry in Jordan; (2) top management, organizational, and structural factors are significant determinants in the degrees of market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation; (3) there is a significant relationship between the degree of market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation in performance of banks in Jordan; (4) national cultural plays a limited role in moderating the effect of market orientation on performance of banks in Jordan, while national culture has no moderating role on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and performance of banks in Jordan; (5) likewise, country institutional profiles have a significant moderating role on the linkage between market orientation and performance of banks in Jordan. However, country constitutional profiles play no moderating role on the effect of entrepreneurial orientation on performance of banks in Jordan. Policy implications of these findings along with contributions to marketing and entrepreneurial literature are discussed. Finally, suggestions for future research are also provided for practitioners and academicians

The purpose of this paper is to present the relationship between an entrepreneur’s choice of strategy and the innovative capacity of his/her new venture. The principal proposition of this exploration is that entrepreneurs that identify more readily to either the design or learning strategy formation school of thought will lead organizations that experience more innovation during the life of the firm. The schools of thought considered in this paper refer to the strategy formation categorizations presented by Mintzberg et. al (1998)

Understanding the Business Value of Social Information Systems – A Research Agenda

    Get PDF
The creation of value by social information systems has been confirmed by recent studies. However, few is known about the mechanisms that create value in so-cial information systems. Therefore, this article investi-gates how social information systems create value. We analyze which and how these value-creating interac-tions appear in different types of social information systems. Based on a literature review, we identify four emergent interactions in social information systems that create value: social production, co-creation, weak ties, and egalitarian decisions. Using our findings, we develop a research agenda to further explore the value creation mechanisms of social information systems
