    Situating interventions to bridge the intention-behaviour gap: A framework for recruiting nonconscious processes for behaviour change

    This paper presents a situated cognition framework for creating social psychological interventions to bridge the intention–behaviour gap and illustrates this framework by reviewing examples from the domains of health behaviour, environmental behaviour, stereotyping, and aggression. A recurrent problem in behaviour change is the fact that often, intentions are not translated into behaviour, causing the so-called intention–behaviour gap. Here, it is argued that this happens when situational cues trigger situated conceptualizations, such as habits, impulses, hedonic goals, or stereotypical associations, which can then guide behaviour automatically. To be effective in changing such automatic effects, behaviour change interventions can attempt to change situational cues through cueing interventions such as priming, nudging, upstream policy interventions, or reminders of social norms. Alternatively, behaviour change interventions can attempt to change the underlying situated conceptualizations through training interventions, such as behavioural inhibition training, mindfulness training, or implementation intentions. Examples of situated behaviour change interventions of both types will be discussed across domains, along with recommendations to situate interventions more strongly and thus enhance their effectiveness to change automatic behaviour. Finally, the discussion addresses the difference between tailoring and situating interventions, issues of generalization and long-term effectiveness, and avenues for further research

    Right here, right now: situated interventions to change consumer habits

    Consumer behavior-change interventions have traditionally encouraged consumers to form conscious intentions, but in the past decade it has been shown that while these interventions have a medium-to-large effect in changing intentions, they have a much smaller effect in changing behavior. Consumers often do not act in accordance with their conscious intentions because situational cues in the immediate environment automatically elicit learned, habitual behaviors. It has therefore been suggested that researchers refocus their efforts on developing interventions that target unconscious, unintentional influences on behavior, such as cue-behavior (“habit”) associations. To develop effective consumer behavior-change interventions, however, we argue that it is first important to understand how consumer experiences are represented in memory, in order to successfully target the situational cues that most strongly predict engagement in habitual behavior. In this article, we present a situated cognition perspective of habits and discuss how the situated cognition perspective extends our understanding of how consumer experiences are represented in memory, and the processes through which these situational representations can be retrieved in order to elicit habitual consumer behaviors. Based on the principles of situated cognition, we then discuss five ways that interventions could change consumer habits by targeting situational cues in the consumer environment and suggest how existing interventions utilizing these behavior-change strategies could be improved by integrating the principles of the situated cognition approach

    Evidence on Imperfect Competition and Strategic Trade Theory

    Strategic trade theory shows that government intervention in markets with small numbers of traders can boost the welfare of a country relative to free trade. This survey critically assesses the empirical evidence regarding this possibility. One finding is that while many international food and agricultural markets are characterized by oligopoly, price-cost markups tend to be small, and the potential gains from intervention are modest at best. In turn, existing government interventions such as agricultural export subsidies are generally not optimal in a strategic trade sense. The evidence suggests that oligopoly by itself is not a sufficient rationale for deviating from free trade in international markets.

    Experimental investigation into novel methods of reliable and secure on-body communications with low system overheads

    Until recently the concept of wearable biosensors for purposes of medical monitoring was restricted to wired sensor applications. Recent advances in electronics and wireless communications have made the possibility of removing the wire from sensor applications a possibility. These advances have led to the development of small scale, wearable, sensing and communication platforms that can be placed on the human body creating the foundation for a Body Sensor Network (BSN). Body Sensor Networks aim to remove the restrictions that traditional wired sensors impose. The anticipation is that BSNs will permit the monitoring of physiological signals in any environment without limitation, giving Physicians the ability to monitor patients more closely and in environments that they cannot monitor today. Even with the recent advancements of electronics and wireless communications there are still many unanswered questions for practical solutions of BSNs that prevent BSNs from replacing traditional wired systems altogether. There is a great need for research into BSN architectures to set the standard for wireless sensor monitoring. In this work a development platform has been created for the investigation into the design and implementation of practical BSN solutions. The platform is used to compare BSN architectures and provide quantifiable results. From this work BSN architecture components that provide optimizations in system performance, energy, network lifetime and security are recommended. In Chapter 3 BSN network architectures employing the use of relaying of creeping waves is investigated. The investigation includes experimental analysis of various test environments. Experimentation demonstrates that the relaying of creeping waves offers considerable performance gains when compared to non-relay networks. For example, relaying is shown to increase network-lifetime by a factor of 13, decrease energy-per-bit requirements by 13 dB and provide the ability for the network to compensate for considerably wider fade margins. In Chapter 4 utilizing the randomness of the wireless channel for securing on-body communications with low overheads is considered. A low-complexity algorithm for establishing symmetric encryption keys is presented and validated. The algorithm relies on readily available RSSI measurements obtained from existing packets being sent and received in the network. The generated bit sequences from the algorithm are evaluated for matching between two communicating parties and mismatching with a malicious eavesdropper. It is shown that the algorithm produces long sequences of highly random bits that are perfectly matched between legitimate parties and highly mismatched with the eavesdropper

    Expert memory: A comparison of four theories

    This paper compares four current theories of expertise with respect to chess players’ memory: Chase and Simon’s (1973) chunking theory, Holding’s (1985) SEEK theory, Ericsson and Kintsch’s (1995) long-term working memory theory, and Gobet and Simon’s (1996b) template theory. The empirical areas showing the largest discriminative power include recall of random and distorted positions, recall with very short presentation times, and interference studies. Contrary to recurrent criticisms in the literature, it is shown that the chunking theory is consistent with most of the data. However, the best performance in accounting for the empirical evidence is obtained by the template theory. The theory, which unifies low-level aspects of cognition, such as chunks, with high-level aspects, such as schematic knowledge and planning, proposes that chunks are accessed through a discrimination net, where simple perceptual features are tested, and that they can evolve into more complex data structures (templates) specific to classes of positions. Implications for the study of expertise in general include the need for detailed process models of expert behavior and the need to use empirical data spanning the traditional boundaries of perception, memory, and problem solving
