Solving Set Cover with Pairs Problem using Quantum Annealing
Here we consider using quantum annealing to solve Set Cover with Pairs (SCP), an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem that plays an important role in networking, computational biology, and biochemistry. We show an explicit construction of Ising Hamiltonians whose ground states encode the solution of SCP instances. We numerically simulate the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in order to test the performance of quantum annealing for random instances and compare with that of simulated annealing. We also discuss explicit embedding strategies for realizing our Hamiltonian construction on the D-wave type restricted Ising Hamiltonian based on Chimera graphs. Our embedding on the Chimera graph preserves the structure of the original SCP instance and in particular, the embedding for general complete bipartite graphs and logical disjunctions may be of broader use than that the specific problem we deal with
Motif Clustering and Overlapping Clustering for Social Network Analysis
Motivated by applications in social network community analysis, we introduce
a new clustering paradigm termed motif clustering. Unlike classical clustering,
motif clustering aims to minimize the number of clustering errors associated
with both edges and certain higher order graph structures (motifs) that
represent "atomic units" of social organizations. Our contributions are
two-fold: We first introduce motif correlation clustering, in which the goal is
to agnostically partition the vertices of a weighted complete graph so that
certain predetermined "important" social subgraphs mostly lie within the same
cluster, while "less relevant" social subgraphs are allowed to lie across
clusters. We then proceed to introduce the notion of motif covers, in which the
goal is to cover the vertices of motifs via the smallest number of (near)
cliques in the graph. Motif cover algorithms provide a natural solution for
overlapping clustering and they also play an important role in latent feature
inference of networks. For both motif correlation clustering and its extension
introduced via the covering problem, we provide hardness results, algorithmic
solutions and community detection results for two well-studied social networks
Ising formulations of many NP problems
We provide Ising formulations for many NP-complete and NP-hard problems,
including all of Karp's 21 NP-complete problems. This collects and extends
mappings to the Ising model from partitioning, covering and satisfiability. In
each case, the required number of spins is at most cubic in the size of the
problem. This work may be useful in designing adiabatic quantum optimization
algorithms.Comment: 27 pages; v2: substantial revision to intro/conclusion, many more

Exploring multiple viewshed analysis using terrain features and optimisation techniques
The calculation of viewsheds is a routine operation in geographic information systems and is used in a wide range of applications. Many of these involve the siting of features, such as radio masts, which are part of a network and yet the selection of sites is normally done separately for each feature. The selection of a series of locations which collectively maximise the visual coverage of an area is a combinatorial problem and as such cannot be directly solved except for trivial cases. In this paper, two strategies for tackling this problem are explored. The first is to restrict the search to key topographic points in the landscape such as peaks, pits and passes. The second is to use heuristics which have been applied to other maximal coverage spatial problems such as location-allocation. The results show that the use of these two strategies results in a reduction of the computing time necessary by two orders of magnitude, but at the cost of a loss of 10% in the area viewed. Three different heuristics were used, of which Simulated Annealing produced the best results. However the improvement over a much simpler fast-descent swap heuristic was very slight, but at the cost of greatly increased running times. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
