Secure k-Nearest Neighbor Query over Encrypted Data in Outsourced Environments

For the past decade, query processing on relational data has been studied extensively, and many theoretical and practical solutions to query processing have been proposed under various scenarios. With the recent popularity of cloud computing, users now have the opportunity to outsource their data as well as the data management tasks to the cloud. However, due to the rise of various privacy issues, sensitive data (e.g., medical records) need to be encrypted before outsourcing to the cloud. In addition, query processing tasks should be handled by the cloud; otherwise, there would be no point to outsource the data at the first place. To process queries over encrypted data without the cloud ever decrypting the data is a very challenging task. In this paper, we focus on solving the k-nearest neighbor (kNN) query problem over encrypted database outsourced to a cloud: a user issues an encrypted query record to the cloud, and the cloud returns the k closest records to the user. We first present a basic scheme and demonstrate that such a naive solution is not secure. To provide better security, we propose a secure kNN protocol that protects the confidentiality of the data, user's input query, and data access patterns. Also, we empirically analyze the efficiency of our protocols through various experiments. These results indicate that our secure protocol is very efficient on the user end, and this lightweight scheme allows a user to use any mobile device to perform the kNN query.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, and 4 table

An important facet of traditional retrieval models is that they retrieve images and videos and consider their content and context reliable. Nevertheless, this consideration is no longer valid since they can be faked for many reasons and at different degrees thanks to powerful multimedia manipulation software. Our goal is to investigate new ways detecting possible fake in social network platforms. In this paper, we propose an approach that assets identification faked images by combining standard content-based image retrieval (CBIR) techniques and watermarking. We have prepared the wartermarked image database of all images using LSB based watermarking. Using gabor features and trained KNN, user is able to retrieve the matching query image. The retrieved image is authenticated by extracting the watermark and matching it again with the test image

ABAKA : a novel attribute-based k-anonymous collaborative solution for LBSs

The increasing use of mobile devices, along with advances in telecommunication systems, increased the popularity of Location-Based Services (LBSs). In LBSs, users share their exact location with a potentially untrusted Location-Based Service Provider (LBSP). In such a scenario, user privacy becomes a major con- cern: the knowledge about user location may lead to her identification as well as a continuous tracing of her position. Researchers proposed several approaches to preserve users’ location privacy. They also showed that hiding the location of an LBS user is not enough to guarantee her privacy, i.e., user’s pro- file attributes or background knowledge of an attacker may reveal the user’s identity. In this paper we propose ABAKA, a novel collaborative approach that provides identity privacy for LBS users considering users’ profile attributes. In particular, our solution guarantees p -sensitive k -anonymity for the user that sends an LBS request to the LBSP. ABAKA computes a cloaked area by collaborative multi-hop forwarding of the LBS query, and using Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (CP-ABE). We ran a thorough set of experiments to evaluate our solution: the results confirm the feasibility and efficiency of our proposal

Privacy-preserving query processing over encrypted data in cloud

The query processing of relational data has been studied extensively throughout the past decade. A number of theoretical and practical solutions to query processing have been proposed under various scenarios. With the recent popularity of cloud computing, data owners now have the opportunity to outsource not only their data but also data processing functionalities to the cloud. Because of data security and personal privacy concerns, sensitive data (e.g., medical records) should be encrypted before being outsourced to a cloud, and the cloud should perform query processing tasks on the encrypted data only. These tasks are termed as Privacy-Preserving Query Processing (PPQP) over encrypted data. Based on the concept of Secure Multiparty Computation (SMC), SMC-based distributed protocols were developed to allow the cloud to perform queries directly over encrypted data. These protocols protect the confidentiality of the stored data, user queries, and data access patterns from cloud service providers and other unauthorized users. Several queries were considered in an attempt to create a well-defined scope. These queries included the k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) query, advanced analytical query, and correlated range query. The proposed protocols utilize an additive homomorphic cryptosystem and/or a garbled circuit technique at different stages of query processing to achieve the best performance. In addition, by adopting a multi-cloud computing paradigm, all computations can be done on the encrypted data without using very expensive fully homomorphic encryptions. The proposed protocols\u27 security was analyzed theoretically, and its practicality was evaluated through extensive empirical results --Abstract, page iii

The data mining sanitization process involves converting the data by masking the sensitive data and then releasing it to public domain. During the sanitization process, side effects such as hiding failure, missing cost and artificial cost of the data were observed. Privacy Preserving Data Mining (PPDM) algorithms were developed for the sanitization process to overcome information loss and yet maintain data integrity. While these PPDM algorithms did provide benefits for privacy preservation, they also made sure to solve the side effects that occurred during the sanitization process. Many PPDM algorithms were developed to reduce these side effects. There are several PPDM algorithms created based on different PPDM techniques. However, previous studies have not explored or justified why non-traditional side effects were not given much importance. This study reported the findings of the side effects for the PPDM algorithms in a newly created web repository. The research methodology adopted for this study was Design Science Research (DSR). This research was conducted in four phases, which were as follows. The first phase addressed the characteristics, similarities, differences, and relationships of existing side effects. The next phase found the characteristics of non-traditional side effects. The third phase used the Privacy Preservation and Security Framework (PPSF) tool to test if non-traditional side effects occur in PPDM algorithms. This phase also attempted to find additional unknown side effects which have not been found in prior studies. PPDM algorithms considered were Greedy, POS2DT, SIF_IDF, cpGA2DT, pGA2DT, sGA2DT. PPDM techniques associated were anonymization, perturbation, randomization, condensation, heuristic, reconstruction, and cryptography. The final phase involved creating a new online web repository to report all the side effects found for the PPDM algorithms. A Web repository was created using full stack web development. AngularJS, Spring, Spring Boot and Hibernate frameworks were used to build the web application. The results of the study implied various PPDM algorithms and their side effects. Additionally, the relationship and impact that hiding failure, missing cost, and artificial cost have on each other was also understood. Interestingly, the side effects and their relationship with the type of data (sensitive or non-sensitive or new) was observed. As the web repository acts as a quick reference domain for PPDM algorithms. Developing, improving, inventing, and reporting PPDM algorithms is necessary. This study will influence researchers or organizations to report, use, reuse, or develop better PPDM algorithms

CAPIA: Cloud Assisted Privacy-Preserving Image Annotation

Using public cloud for image storage has become a prevalent trend with the rapidly increasing number of pictures generated by various devices. For example, today\u27s most smartphones and tablets synchronize photo albums with cloud storage platforms. However, as many images contain sensitive information, such as personal identities and financial data, it is concerning to upload images to cloud storage. To eliminate such privacy concerns in cloud storage while keeping decent data management and search features, a spectrum of keywords-based searchable encryption (SE) schemes have been proposed in the past decade. Unfortunately, there is a fundamental gap remains open for their support of images, i.e., appropriate keywords need to be extracted for images before applying SE schemes to them. On one hand, it is obviously impractical for smartphone users to manually annotate their images. On the other hand, although cloud storage services now offer image annotation services, they rely on access to users\u27 unencrypted images. To fulfill this gap and open the first path from SE schemes to images, this paper proposes a cloud assisted privacy-preserving automatic image annotation scheme, namely CAPIA. CAPIA enables cloud storage users to automatically assign keywords to their images by leveraging the power of cloud computing. Meanwhile, CAPIA prevents the cloud from learning the content of images and their keywords. Thorough analysis is carried out to demonstrate the security of CAPIA. A prototype implementation over the well-known IAPR TC-12 dataset further validates the efficiency and accuracy of CAPIA

For some time now, big data applications have been enabling revolutionary innovation in every aspect of our daily life by taking advantage of lots of data generated from the interactions of users with technology. Supported by machine learning and unprecedented computation capabilities, different entities are capable of efficiently exploiting such data to obtain significant utility. However, since personal information is involved, these practices raise serious privacy concerns. Although multiple privacy protection mechanisms have been proposed, there are some challenges that need to be addressed for these mechanisms to be adopted in practice, i.e., to be “usable” beyond the privacy guarantee offered. To start, the real impact of privacy protection mechanisms on data utility is not clear, thus an empirical evaluation of such impact is crucial. Moreover, since privacy is commonly obtained through the perturbation of large data sets, usable privacy technologies may require not only preservation of data utility but also efficient algorithms in terms of computation speed. Satisfying both requirements is key to encourage the adoption of privacy initiatives. Although considerable effort has been devoted to design less “destructive” privacy mechanisms, the utility metrics employed may not be appropriate, thus the wellness of such mechanisms would be incorrectly measured. On the other hand, despite the advent of big data, more efficient approaches are not being considered. Not complying with the requirements of current applications may hinder the adoption of privacy technologies. In the first part of this thesis, we address the problem of measuring the effect of k-anonymous microaggregation on the empirical utility of microdata. We quantify utility accordingly as the accuracy of classification models learned from microaggregated data, evaluated over original test data. Our experiments show that the impact of the de facto microaggregation standard on the performance of machine-learning algorithms is often minor for a variety of data sets. Furthermore, experimental evidence suggests that the traditional measure of distortion in the community of microdata anonymization may be inappropriate for evaluating the utility of microaggregated data. Secondly, we address the problem of preserving the empirical utility of data. By transforming the original data records to a different data space, our approach, based on linear discriminant analysis, enables k-anonymous microaggregation to be adapted to the application domain of data. To do this, first, data is rotated (projected) towards the direction of maximum discrimination and, second, scaled in this direction, penalizing distortion across the classification threshold. As a result, data utility is preserved in terms of the accuracy of machine learned models for a number of standardized data sets. Afterwards, we propose a mechanism to reduce the running time for the k-anonymous microaggregation algorithm. This is obtained by simplifying the internal operations of the original algorithm. Through extensive experimentation over multiple data sets, we show that the new algorithm gets significantly faster. Interestingly, this remarkable speedup factor is achieved with no additional loss of data utility.Les aplicacions de big data impulsen actualment una accelerada innovació aprofitant la gran quantitat d’informació generada a partir de les interaccions dels usuaris amb la tecnologia.
