Coverage Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks: Review and Future Directions
The coverage problem in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can be generally
defined as a measure of how effectively a network field is monitored by its
sensor nodes. This problem has attracted a lot of interest over the years and
as a result, many coverage protocols were proposed. In this survey, we first
propose a taxonomy for classifying coverage protocols in WSNs. Then, we
classify the coverage protocols into three categories (i.e. coverage aware
deployment protocols, sleep scheduling protocols for flat networks, and
cluster-based sleep scheduling protocols) based on the network stage where the
coverage is optimized. For each category, relevant protocols are thoroughly
reviewed and classified based on the adopted coverage techniques. Finally, we
discuss open issues (and recommend future directions to resolve them)
associated with the design of realistic coverage protocols. Issues such as
realistic sensing models, realistic energy consumption models, realistic
connectivity models and sensor localization are covered
Predicting Performance of Channel Assignments in Wireless Mesh Networks through Statistical Interference Estimation
Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) deployments are poised to reduce the reliance on
wired infrastructure especially with the advent of the multi-radio
multi-channel (MRMC) WMN architecture. But the benefits that MRMC WMNs offer
viz., augmented network capacity, uninterrupted connectivity and reduced
latency, are depreciated by the detrimental effect of prevalent interference.
Interference mitigation is thus a prime objective in WMN deployments. It is
often accomplished through prudent channel allocation (CA) schemes which
minimize the adverse impact of interference and enhance the network
performance. However, a multitude of CA schemes have been proposed in research
literature and absence of a CA performance prediction metric, which could aid
in the selection of an efficient CA scheme for a given WMN, is often felt. In
this work, we offer a fresh characterization of the interference endemic in
wireless networks. We then propose a reliable CA performance prediction metric,
which employs a statistical interference estimation approach. We carry out a
rigorous quantitative assessment of the proposed metric by validating its CA
performance predictions with experimental results, recorded from extensive
simulations run on an ns-3 802.11g environment
Selecting source image sensor nodes based on 2-hop information to improve image transmissions to mobile robot sinks in search \& rescue operations
We consider Robot-assisted Search Rescue operations enhanced with some
fixed image sensor nodes capable of capturing and sending visual information to
a robot sink. In order to increase the performance of image transfer from image
sensor nodes to the robot sinks we propose a 2-hop neighborhood
information-based cover set selection to determine the most relevant image
sensor nodes to activate. Then, in order to be consistent with our proposed
approach, a multi-path extension of Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing (called
T-GPSR) wherein routing decisions are also based on 2-hop neighborhood
information is proposed. Simulation results show that our proposal reduces
packet losses, enabling fast packet delivery and higher visual quality of
received images at the robot sink
EGOIST: Overlay Routing Using Selfish Neighbor Selection
A foundational issue underlying many overlay network applications ranging from routing to P2P file sharing is that of connectivity management, i.e., folding new arrivals into an existing overlay, and re-wiring to cope with changing network conditions. Previous work has considered the problem from two perspectives: devising practical heuristics for specific applications designed to work well in real deployments, and providing abstractions for the underlying problem that are analytically tractable, especially via game-theoretic analysis. In this paper, we unify these two thrusts by using insights gleaned from novel, realistic theoretic models in the design of Egoist – a prototype overlay routing system that we implemented, deployed, and evaluated on PlanetLab. Using measurements on PlanetLab and trace-based simulations, we demonstrate that Egoist's neighbor selection primitives significantly outperform existing heuristics on a variety of performance metrics, including delay, available bandwidth, and node utilization. Moreover, we demonstrate that Egoist is competitive with an optimal, but unscalable full-mesh approach, remains highly effective under significant churn, is robust to cheating, and incurs minimal overhead.
