CHOP: Maximum Coverage Optimization and Resolve Hole Healing Problem using Sleep and Wake-up Technique for WSN
The Sensor Nodes (SN) play an important role in various hazardous applications environments such as military surveillance, forests, battlefield, etc. The Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) comprised multiple numbers of sensor nodes which are used to perform sensing the physical conditions and subsequently transmitting data to the Base Station (BS). The nodes have limited batteries. The random distribution of nodes in the hazardous areas causes overlapping of nodes and coverage hole issues in the network. The Coverage Optimization and Resolve Hole Healing (CHOP) Protocol is proposed to optimize the network's overlapping and resolve the coverage hole problem. The working phases of the proposed protocol are network initialization, formation of the cluster, Selection of Cluster Head, and sleep and wake-up phase. The issues are optimized, and maximum coverage is achieved for a specific sensing range. Using statistics and probability theory, a link is established between the radius of the node and the coverage area. The protocol used the sleep and wake phase to select optimal nodes active to achieve maximum coverage. The proposed protocol outperformed and showed improvements in the network's performance and lifetime compared to LEACH, TEEN, SEP, and DEEC protocols

Automatic triangulation positioning system for wide area coverage from a fixed sensors network
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonIn a wide area that many Transmitters (TRs) operate, systems of Fixed Sensors (FS) might be used in order to detect them and find TRs position. The detection and the accurate location of a new TR entering in the area frequently can be missed if the system fails to triangulate accurately the relative readings and analyze the changes in the received data. Additionally, there are cases that a Triangulation Station Network (TSN) can detect the heading as well as the transmitter’s position wrong. This thesis presents the design of a Sensors Network (FSN) system which is able to interact with a user, and exploit the relative data of the Sensors (SRs) in real time. The system performs localization with triangulation and the SRs are detect only TRs bearing data (range free). System design and algorithms are also explained. Efficient algorithms were elaborated and the outcomes of their implementation were calculated. The system design targets to reduce system errors and increase the accuracy and the speed of detection. Synchronously and through interaction with the user and changes of relative settings and parameters will be able to offer the user accurate results on localization of TRs in the area minimizing false readings and False Triangulations (FTRNs). The system also enables the user to apply optimization techniques in order to increase the system detection rate and performance and keep the surveillance in the Field of Interest (FoI) on a high level. The optimization methodology applied for the system proves that the FSN system is able to operate with a high performance even when saturation phenomena appear. The unique outcome of the research conducted, is that this thesis paves the way to enhance the localization via Triangulation for a network of Fixed Sensors with known position. The value of this thesis is that the FSN system performs bearing only detection (Range free) with a certain accuracy and the Area of Interest (AOI) is covered efficiently

Coverage Area of a Localization Fixed Sensors Network System with the process of Triangulation
Copyright © 2021 The Authors. This paper presents a novel work on localization of transmitters using triangulation with sensors at fixed positions. This is achieved when three or more sensors cover the whole area, a factor which enables the system to perform localization via triangulation. The network needs to keep a high detection rate which, in most cases, is achieved by adequate sensor coverage. Various tests using various grids of sensors have been carried out to investigate the way the system operates in different cases using a lot of transmitters. Detection complexity is tackled by finding the optimal detecting sensor radius in order the network to continue operate normally. The coverage quality changes in the area of interest and the network is able to detect new transmitters that might enter it's area. It is also shown that as the number of transmitters increases the network keeps its high performance by using additional groups of sensors in a sub-region area of that of interest. This way, even when the network is saturated by many transmitters in one region, new transmitters can still be detected
Foundations of coverage algorithms in autonomic mobile sensor networks
Drones are poised to become a prominent focus of advances in the near future as hardware platforms manufactured via mass production become accessible to consumers in higher quantities at lower costs than ever before. As more ways to utilize such devices become more popular, algorithms for directing the activities of mobile sensors must expand in order to automate their work.
This work explores algorithms used to direct the behavior of networks of autonomous mobile sensors, and in particular how such networks can operate to achieve coverage of a field using mobility. We focus special attention to the way limited mobility affects the performance (and other factors) of algorithms traditionally applied to area coverage and event detection problems.
Strategies for maximizing event detection and minimizing detection delay as mobile sensors with limited mobility are explored in the first part of this work. Next we examine exploratory coverage, a new way of analyzing sensor coverage, concerned more with covering each part of the coverage field once, while minimizing mobility required to achieve this level of 1-coverage. This analysis is contained in the second part of this work.
Extending the analysis of mobility, we next strive to explore the novel topic of disabled mobility in mobile sensors, and how algorithms might react to increase effectiveness given that some sensors have lost mobility while retaining other senses. This work analyzes algorithm effectiveness in light of disabled mobility, demonstrates how this particular failure mode impacts common coverage algorithms, and presents ways to adjust algorithms to mitigate performance losses. --Abstract, page iv
A critical analysis of research potential, challenges and future directives in industrial wireless sensor networks
In recent years, Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) have emerged as an important research theme with applications spanning a wide range of industries including automation, monitoring, process control, feedback systems and automotive. Wide scope of IWSNs applications ranging from small production units, large oil and gas industries to nuclear fission control, enables a fast-paced research in this field. Though IWSNs offer advantages of low cost, flexibility, scalability, self-healing, easy deployment and reformation, yet they pose certain limitations on available potential and introduce challenges on multiple fronts due to their susceptibility to highly complex and uncertain industrial environments. In this paper a detailed discussion on design objectives, challenges and solutions, for IWSNs, are presented. A careful evaluation of industrial systems, deadlines and possible hazards in industrial atmosphere are discussed. The paper also presents a thorough review of the existing standards and industrial protocols and gives a critical evaluation of potential of these standards and protocols along with a detailed discussion on available hardware platforms, specific industrial energy harvesting techniques and their capabilities. The paper lists main service providers for IWSNs solutions and gives insight of future trends and research gaps in the field of IWSNs
Wireless Sensor Network Deployment
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are widely used for various civilian and military applications, and thus have attracted significant interest in recent years. This work investigates the important problem of optimal deployment of WSNs in terms of coverage and energy consumption. Five deployment algorithms are developed for maximal sensing range and minimal energy consumption in order to provide optimal sensing coverage and maximum lifetime. Also, all developed algorithms include self-healing capabilities in order to restore the operation of WSNs after a number of nodes have become inoperative.
Two centralized optimization algorithms are developed, one based on Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and one based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Both optimization algorithms use powerful central nodes to calculate and obtain the global optimum outcomes. The GA is used to determine the optimal tradeoff between network coverage and overall distance travelled by fixed range sensors. The PSO algorithm is used to ensure 100% network coverage and minimize the energy consumed by mobile and range-adjustable sensors. Up to 30% - 90% energy savings can be provided in different scenarios by using the developed optimization algorithms thereby extending the lifetime of the sensor by 1.4 to 10 times.
Three distributed optimization algorithms are also developed to relocate the sensors and optimize the coverage of networks with more stringent design and cost constraints. Each algorithm is cooperatively executed by all sensors to achieve better coverage. Two of our algorithms use the relative positions between sensors to optimize the coverage and energy savings. They provide 20% to 25% more energy savings than existing solutions. Our third algorithm is developed for networks without self-localization capabilities and supports the optimal deployment of such networks without requiring the use of expensive geolocation hardware or energy consuming localization algorithms. This is important for indoor monitoring applications since current localization algorithms cannot provide good accuracy for sensor relocation algorithms in such indoor environments. This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityThe wireless mesh network is a potential network for the future due to its excellent inherent characteristic for dynamic self-healing, self-configuration and self-organization. It also has the advantage of easy interoperability networking and the ability to form multi-linked ad-hoc networks. It has a decentralized topology, is cheap and highly scalable. Furthermore, its ease in deployment and easy maintenance are other inherent networking qualities. These aforementioned qualities of the wireless mesh network bring advantages to transmission capability of heterogeneous networks. However, transmissions in wireless mesh network create comparative performance based challenges such as congestion, load-balancing, scalability over increasing networks and coverage capacity. Consequently, these challenges and problems in the routing and switching of packets in the wireless mesh network routing protocols led to a proposal on the resolution of these failures with a combination algorithm and a management based security for the network and its transmitted packets. There are equally contentious services like reliability of the network and quality of service for real-time multimedia traffic flows with other challenges such as path computation and selection in the wireless mesh network.
This thesis is therefore a cumulative proposal to the resolution of the outlined challenges and open research areas posed by using wireless mesh network routing protocol. It advances the resolution of these challenges in the mesh environment using a hybrid optimization – traffic engineering, to increase the effectiveness and the reliability of the network. It also proffers a cumulative resolution of the diverse contributions on wireless mesh network routing protocol and transmission. Adaptation and optimization are carried out on the wireless mesh network designed network using traffic engineering mechanism and technique. The research examines the patterns of mesh packet transmission and evaluates the challenges and failures in the mesh network packet transmission. It develops a solution based algorithm for resolutions and proposes the traffic engineering based solution.. These resultant performances and analysis are usually tested and compared over wireless mesh IEEE802.11n or other older proposed documented solution.
This thesis used a carefully designed campus mesh network to show a comparative evaluation of an optimal performance of the mesh nodes and routers over a normal IEE802.11n based wireless domain network to show differentiation by optimization using the created algorithms. Furthermore, the indexes of performance being the metric are used to measure the utility and the reliability, including capacity and throughput at the destination during traffic engineered transmission. In addition, the security of these transmitted data and packets are optimized under a traffic engineered technique. Finally, this thesis offers an understanding to the security contribution using traffic engineering resolution to create a management algorithm for processing and computation of the wireless mesh networks security needs.
