    Imaging and discrete modelling of sand shape

    The shape of particles is known to play an important role in soil behaviour, with significant effects of engineering responses. Investigating how the shape of particles can be measured and quantified is therefore considered increasingly important in modern soil mechanics. This is propelled by the advent of computer based image-analyses and discrete modelling algorithms, which have opened new ways to tackle this problem. This work demonstrates how these two techniques can be made to work together. Image analyses are performed on x-rays micro-tomographs (µ-CT) of triaxial sand specimens, focusing on the characterisation and quantification of particle shapes. Two with very different particle shape sands are studied in details: Caicos ooids (rounded) and Hostun sand (angular). A discrete Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) algorithm is then used to track the kinematics of individual grains (around 50000 for each sand specimen) during the triaxial test and measure, with good precision, their cumulated displacements and rotations. Joint analysis of the shape and kinematic databases acquired is performed to find how particle shape descriptors are related to observed kinematics at the microscale level. It appears that true sphericity is a good predictor of upper bound rotational restraint. Modelling is based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM). Models that introduce rolling resistance at the contact are widely employed in DEM simulations, these approaches offer substantial computational benefits at the prize of increased calibration complexity. In this work, the values of true sphericity obtained by image analysis of the grains, either directly by 3D acquisition or by correlation with simpler to obtain 2D shape measures, are used to establish mechanically equivalent rotational restrictions. An empirical relation between a contact parameter (rolling friction) and a 3D grain shape descriptor (true sphericity is first calibrated - using both specimen-scale and grain scale results from two triaxial tests in Hostun sand and Caicos ooids. It is then validated by simulating other triaxial tests (1) with the same sands, but in different conditions (2) with Ottawa sand, for which 3D grain images were also available for examination, and (3) with Ticino sand, for which only 2D grain images were available. Finally, results of large-scale DEM simulations on the Cone Penetration Test (CPT) - exploiting the new proposed contact model - are presented. Experimental data on the CPT performed in a Calibration Chamber (CC) comprised of Ticino sand are successfully fitted by the numerical penetration curves at different confining pressures and conditions. A parametric study about the influence of particle shape and particle shape variability put in evidence the strong-coupled effects of rolling and frictional resistances at the particles contacts. The work described in this thesis will ease the use of DEM for large-scale simulations of geotechnical engineering problems.Se sabe que la forma de las partículas juega un papel importante en el comportamiento del suelo, con efectos significativos de las respuestas mecánicas relevantes en ingeniería geotécnica. Por lo tanto, investigar cómo se puede medir y cuantificar la forma de las partículas se considera cada vez más importante en la mecánica del suelo moderna. Esto se acrecienta debido a las técnicas de análisis computacionales de imágenes y algoritmos de modelado discreto (DEM), que han abierto nuevas formas de abordar este problema. Este trabajo demuestra cómo se pueden hacer que estas dos técnicas funcionen juntas. Los análisis de imagen se realizan sobre micro-tomografías de rayos X (µ-CT) de muestras de arena en celdas triaxiales, centrándose en la caracterización y cuantificación de la forma de las partículas. Se estudian en detalle dos arenas con la forma de sus partículas muy diferentes: Caicos ooids (redondeados) y Hostun sand (angular). Luego se utiliza un algoritmo discreto de correlación de volumen digital (DVC) para rastrear la cinemática de granos individuales (alrededor de 50000 por cada muestra de arena) durante la prueba triaxial y medir, con buena precisión, sus desplazamientos y rotaciones acumulados. El análisis conjunto de la forma y las bases de datos cinemáticas adquiridas se realiza para encontrar cómo los descriptores de forma de partículas se relacionan con la cinemática observada a nivel de micro-escala. Resulta que la esfericidad verdadera predice bien el límite superior de rotación de una partícula. La modelización numérica se basa en el Método de Elementos Discretos (DEM). Los modelos que introducen resistencia a la rotación en el contacto se emplean ampliamente en simulaciones DEM, estos enfoques ofrecen beneficios computacionales sustanciales a costa de una mayor complejidad de calibración. En este trabajo, los valores de esfericidad verdadera (i.e., true sphericity) obtenidos mediante análisis de imagen de los granos, ya sea directamente por adquisición 3D o por correlación con medidas de forma 2D más simples, se utilizan para establecer restricciones de rotación mecánicamente equivalentes. Una relación empírica entre un parámetro de contacto (rolling friction) y un descriptor de forma de grano 3D (la esfericidad verdadera) se calibra primero, utilizando los resultados de la escala de muestras y de la escala de granos de dos pruebas triaxiales en las arenas de Hostun y de Caicos. Luego se valida simulando otras pruebas triaxiales (1) con las mismas arenas, pero en diferentes condiciones (2) con arena de Ottawa, para la que también estaban disponibles imágenes 3D de granos para su examen, y (3) con arena de Ticino, para la cual solo estaban disponibles imágenes 2D de los granos. Finalmente, se presentan resultados de simulaciones DEM a gran escala de la prueba de penetración de cono (CPT), aprovechando el nuevo modelo de contacto propuesto. Los datos experimentales del CPT realizado en una cámara de calibración (CC) sobre arena de Ticino se ajustan con éxito por las curvas de penetración numérica a diferentes presiones y condiciones de confinamiento. Un estudio paramétrico sobre la influencia de la forma de las partículas y la variabilidad de las formas de las partículas puso de manifiesto los efectos fuertemente acoplados de las resistencias rotacional y friccional en los contactos entre partículas.     Methods for computer aided inspection of geometric tolerances

    This thesis investigates computational methods for assessing tolerance specifications of geometric features in a context of computer aided inspection. It is concerned with checking the sampled features for containment within tolerance zones specified at the design stage, not with explicit shape measurement. The significance of this difference is highlighted when two or more features are to be inspected in combination. The approach adopted is to express the tolerance information as a set of inequality constraints and then to seek efficient methods for determining the feasibility of the set, that is whether all the constraints can be simultaneously satisfied. Roundness inspection is used to introduce all the concepts of the new formulations. By linearisation of the constraints, a standard approximation in roundness measurement, a new algorithm is implemented which provides a “GO-NOGO” result of inspection by checking for feasibility in a highly efficient way. This algorithmic approach is then extended to other inspection situations where naturally linear constraints or valid linearisation occur. Since there are many inspection cases where linearisation is not appropriate, non-linear optimisation techniques are then investigated for their effectiveness in feasibility testing. The inspection of arrays of circular features is used here as a typical test case. Genetic search methods are explored as a possible alternative to formal non-linear programming and guidelines for their efficient use for this problem are proposed. These methods are then compared and contrasted with formal methods, particularly generalised reduced gradient (GRG) and sequential quadratic programming (SQP). The linear algorithm is shown to be the most efficient when it can be used, although all techniques were fast enough for on-line use with modest sized data sets. Currently all the non-linear methods are too expensive for routine use on large data sets. GRG is recommended as having the most favourable combination of good and bad features, but there is some evidence that genetic search might be relatively more efficient for more complex inspection problems

    Mapping and Real-Time Navigation With Application to Small UAS Urgent Landing

    Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) operating in low-altitude airspace require flight near buildings and over people. Robust urgent landing capabilities including landing site selection are needed. However, conventional fixed-wing emergency landing sites such as open fields and empty roadways are rare in cities. This motivates our work to uniquely consider unoccupied flat rooftops as possible nearby landing sites. We propose novel methods to identify flat rooftop buildings, isolate their flat surfaces, and find touchdown points that maximize distance to obstacles. We model flat rooftop surfaces as polygons that capture their boundaries and possible obstructions on them. This thesis offers five specific contributions to support urgent rooftop landing. First, the Polylidar algorithm is developed which enables efficient non-convex polygon extraction with interior holes from 2D point sets. A key insight of this work is a novel boundary following method that contrasts computationally expensive geometric unions of triangles. Results from real-world and synthetic benchmarks show comparable accuracy and more than four times speedup compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Second, we extend polygon extraction from 2D to 3D data where polygons represent flat surfaces and interior holes representing obstacles. Our Polylidar3D algorithm transforms point clouds into a triangular mesh where dominant plane normals are identified and used to parallelize and regularize planar segmentation and polygon extraction. The result is a versatile and extremely fast algorithm for non-convex polygon extraction of 3D data. Third, we propose a framework for classifying roof shape (e.g., flat) within a city. We process satellite images, airborne LiDAR point clouds, and building outlines to generate both a satellite and depth image of each building. Convolutional neural networks are trained for each modality to extract high level features and sent to a random forest classifier for roof shape prediction. This research contributes the largest multi-city annotated dataset with over 4,500 rooftops used to train and test models. Our results show flat-like rooftops are identified with > 90% precision and recall. Fourth, we integrate Polylidar3D and our roof shape prediction model to extract flat rooftop surfaces from archived data sources. We uniquely identify optimal touchdown points for all landing sites. We model risk as an innovative combination of landing site and path risk metrics and conduct a multi-objective Pareto front analysis for sUAS urgent landing in cities. Our proposed emergency planning framework guarantees a risk-optimal landing site and flight plan is selected. Fifth, we verify a chosen rooftop landing site on real-time vertical approach with on-board LiDAR and camera sensors. Our method contributes an innovative fusion of semantic segmentation using neural networks with computational geometry that is robust to individual sensor and method failure. We construct a high-fidelity simulated city in the Unreal game engine with a statistically-accurate representation of rooftop obstacles. We show our method leads to greater than 4% improvement in accuracy for landing site identification compared to using LiDAR only. This work has broad impact for the safety of sUAS in cities as well as Urban Air Mobility (UAM). Our methods identify thousands of additional rooftop landing sites in cities which can provide safe landing zones in the event of emergencies. However, the maps we create are limited by the availability, accuracy, and resolution of archived data. The second and new method uses curved triangles that follow the surface. Quantum mechanical effects introduced structure into the matter distribution in the early universe. The universe expanded according the laws of General Relativity and the matter cooled down. After the matter in the universe had cooled down, clusters of galaxies formed out of the densest regions. These clusters of galaxies are connected by stringy structures consisting of galaxies.     The contemporary design solutions are merging the boundaries between real and virtual world. The Landscape architecture like the other interdisciplinary field stepped in a contemporary technologies area focused on that, beside the good execution of works, designer solutions has to be more realistic and “touchable”. The opportunities provided by Virtual Reality are certainly not negligible, it is common knowledge that the designs in the world are already presented in this way so the Virtual Reality increasingly used. Following the example of the application of virtual reality in landscape architecture, this paper deals with proposals for the use of virtual reality in landscape architecture so that designers, clients and users would have a virtual sense of scope e.g. rooftop garden, urban areas, parks, roads, etc. It is a programming language that creates a series of images creating a whole, so certain parts can be controlled or even modified in VR. Virtual reality today requires a specific gadget, such as Occulus, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR and similar. The aim of this paper is to acquire new theoretical and practical knowledge in the interdisciplinary field of virtual reality, the ability to display using virtual reality methods, and to present through a brief overview the plant species used in the design and construction of an intensive roof garden in a Mediterranean climate, the basic characteristics of roofing gardens as well as the benefits they carry. Virtual and augmented reality as technology is a very powerful tool for landscape architects, when modeling roof gardens, parks, and urban areas. One of the most popular technologies used by landscape architects is Google Tilt Brush, which enables fast modeling. The Google Tilt Brush VR app allows modeling in three-dimensional virtual space using a palette to work with the use of a three dimensional brush. The terms of two "programmed" realities - virtual reality and augmented reality - are often confused. One thing they have in common, though, is VRML - Virtual Reality Modeling Language. In this paper are shown the ways on which this issue can be solved and by the way, get closer the term of Virtual Reality (VR), also all the opportunities which the Virtual reality offered us. As well, in this paper are shown the conditions of Mediterranean climate, the conceptual solution and the plant species which will be used by execution of intensive green roof on the motel “Marković”
