    Controlled switching in Kalman filtering and iterative learning controls

    “Switching is not an uncommon phenomenon in practical systems and processes, for examples, power switches opening and closing, transmissions lifting from low gear to high gear, and air planes crossing different layers in air. Switching can be a disaster to a system since frequent switching between two asymptotically stable subsystems may result in unstable dynamics. On the contrary, switching can be a benefit to a system since controlled switching is sometimes imposed by the designers to achieve desired performance. This encourages the study of system dynamics and performance when undesired switching occurs or controlled switching is imposed. In this research, the controlled switching is applied to an estimation process and a multivariable Iterative Learning Control (ILC) system, and system stability as well as system performance under switching are investigated. The first article develops a controlled switching strategy for the estimation of a temporal shift in a Laser Tracker (LT). For some reason, the shift cannot be measured at all time. Therefore, a model-based predictor is adopted for estimation when the measurement is not available, and a Kalman Filter (KF) is used to update the estimate when the measurement is available. With the proposed method, the estimation uncertainty is always bounded within two predefined boundaries. The second article develops a controlled switching method for multivariable ILC systems where only partial outputs are measured at a time. Zero tracking error cannot be achieved for such systems using standard ILC due to incomplete knowledge of the outputs. With the developed controlled switching, all the outputs are measured in a sequential order, and, with each currently-measured output, the standard ILC is executed. Conditions under which zero convergent tracking error is accomplished with the proposed method are investigated.     Adaptive and Optimal Motion Control of Multi-UAV Systems

    This thesis studies trajectory tracking and coordination control problems for single and multi unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems. These control problems are addressed for both quadrotor and fixed-wing UAV cases. Despite the fact that the literature has some approaches for both problems, most of the previous studies have implementation challenges on real-time systems. In this thesis, we use a hierarchical modular approach where the high-level coordination and formation control tasks are separated from low-level individual UAV motion control tasks. This separation helps efficient and systematic optimal control synthesis robust to effects of nonlinearities, uncertainties and external disturbances at both levels, independently. The modular two-level control structure is convenient in extending single-UAV motion control design to coordination control of multi-UAV systems. Therefore, we examine single quadrotor UAV trajectory tracking problems to develop advanced controllers compensating effects of nonlinearities and uncertainties, and improving robustness and optimality for tracking performance. At fi rst, a novel adaptive linear quadratic tracking (ALQT) scheme is developed for stabilization and optimal attitude control of the quadrotor UAV system. In the implementation, the proposed scheme is integrated with Kalman based reliable attitude estimators, which compensate measurement noises. Next, in order to guarantee prescribed transient and steady-state tracking performances, we have designed a novel backstepping based adaptive controller that is robust to effects of underactuated dynamics, nonlinearities and model uncertainties, e.g., inertial and rotational drag uncertainties. The tracking performance is guaranteed to utilize a prescribed performance bound (PPB) based error transformation. In the coordination control of multi-UAV systems, following the two-level control structure, at high-level, we design a distributed hierarchical (leader-follower) 3D formation control scheme. Then, the low-level control design is based on the optimal and adaptive control designs performed for each quadrotor UAV separately. As particular approaches, we design an adaptive mixing controller (AMC) to improve robustness to varying parametric uncertainties and an adaptive linear quadratic controller (ALQC). Lastly, for planar motion, especially for constant altitude flight of fixed-wing UAVs, in 2D, a distributed hierarchical (leader-follower) formation control scheme at the high-level and a linear quadratic tracking (LQT) scheme at the low-level are developed for tracking and formation control problems of the fixed-wing UAV systems to examine the non-holonomic motion case. The proposed control methods are tested via simulations and experiments on a multi-quadrotor UAV system testbed

    Identification and Optimal Linear Tracking Control of ODU Autonomous Surface Vehicle

    Autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) are being used for diverse applications of civilian and military importance such as: military reconnaissance, sea patrol, bathymetry, environmental monitoring, and oceanographic research. Currently, these unmanned tasks can accurately be accomplished by ASVs due to recent advancements in computing, sensing, and actuating systems. For this reason, researchers around the world have been taking interest in ASVs for the last decade. Due to the ever-changing surface of water and stochastic disturbances such as wind and tidal currents that greatly affect the path-following ability of ASVs, identification of an accurate model of inherently nonlinear and stochastic ASV system and then designing a viable control using that model for its planar motion is a challenging task. For planar motion control of ASV, the work done by researchers is mainly based on the theoretical modeling in which the nonlinear hydrodynamic terms are determined, while some work suggested the nonlinear control techniques and adhered to simulation results. Also, the majority of work is related to the mono- or twin-hull ASVs with a single rudder. The ODU-ASV used in present research is a twin-hull design having two DC trolling motors for path-following motion. A novel approach of time-domain open-loop observer Kalman filter identifications (OKID) and state-feedback optimal linear tracking control of ODU-ASV is presented, in which a linear state-space model of ODU-ASV is obtained from the measured input and output data. The accuracy of the identified model for ODU-ASV is confirmed by validation results of model output data reconstruction and benchmark residual analysis. Then, the OKID-identified model of the ODU-ASV is utilized to design the proposed controller for its planar motion such that a predefined cost function is minimized using state and control weighting matrices, which are determined by a multi-objective optimization genetic algorithm technique. The validation results of proposed controller using step inputs as well as sinusoidal and arc-like trajectories are presented to confirm the controller performance. Moreover, real-time water-trials were performed and their results confirm the validity of proposed controller in path-following motion of ODU-ASV

    Design, construction and commissioning of the Thermal Screen Control System for the CMS Tracker detector at CERN

    The CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) laboratory is currently building the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Four international collaborations have designed (and are now constructing) detectors able to exploit the physics potential of this collider. Among them is the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS), a general purpose detector optimized for the search of Higgs boson and for physics beyond the Standard Model of fundamental interactions between elementary particles. This thesis presents, in particular, the design, construction, commissioning and test of the control system for a screen that provides a thermal separation between the Tracker and ECAL (Electromagnetic CALorimeter) detector of CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid experiment). Chapter 1 introduces the new challenges posed by these installations and deals, more in detail, with the Tracker detector of CMS. The size of current experiments for high energy physics is comparable to that of a small industrial plant: therefore, the techniques used for controls and regulations, although highly customized, must adopt Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) hardare and software. The âワslow controlâ systems for the experiments at CERN make extensive use of PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) to provide safety levels (namely interlocks), regulations, remote control of high and low voltages distributions, as well as archiving and trending facilities. The system described in this thesis must follow the same philosophy and, at the same time, comply with international engineering standards. While the interlocks applications belong straightforwardly to the category of DES (Discrete Event System), and are therefore treated with a Finite State Machine approach, other controls are more strictly related to the regulation problem. Chapter 2 will focus on various aspects of modern process control and on the tools used to design the control system for the thermal screen: the principles upon which the controller is designed and tuned, and the model validated, including the Multiple Input-Multiple Output (MIMO) problematics are explained. The thermal screen itself, the constraints and the basis of its functioning are described in Chapter 3, where the thermodynamical design is discussed as well. For the LHC experiments, the aim of a control system is also to provide a well defined SIL (Safety Interlock Level) to keep the system in a safe condition; yet, in this case, it is necessary to regulate the temperature of the system within certain values and respect the constraints arising from the specific needs of the above mentioned subsystems. The most natural choice for a PLC-based controller is a PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) controller. This kind of controller is widely used in many industrial process, from batch production in the pharmaceutics or automotive field to chemical plants, distillation columns and, in general, wherever a reliable and robust control is needed. In order to design and tune PID controllers, many techniques are in use; the approach followed in this thesis is that of black-box modeling: the system is modeled in the time domain, a transfer function is inferred and a controller is designed. Then, a system identification procedure allows for a more thorough study and validation of the model, and for the controller tuning. Project of the thermal screen control including system modeling, controller design and MIMO implementation issues are entirely covered in Chapter 4. A systems engineering methodology has been followed all along to adequately manage and document every phase of the project, complying with time and budget constraints. A risk analysis has been performed, using Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) and Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP), to understand the level of protection assured by the thermal screen and its control components. Tests planned and then performed to validate the model and for quality assurance purposes are described in Chapter 5. A climatic chamber has been designed and built at CERN, where the real operating conditions of the thermal screen are simulated. Detailed test procedures have been defined, following IEEE standards, in order to completely check every single thermal screen panel. This installation allows for a comparison of different controller tuning approaches, including IAE minimization, Skogestad tuning rules, Internal Model Control (IMC), and a technique based upon the MatLab Optimization toolbox. This installation is also used for system identification purposes and for the acceptance tests of every thermal screen panel (allowing for both electrical and hydraulic checks). Also, tests have been performed on the West Hall CERN experimental area , where a full control system has been set up, for interlock high- and low- voltage lines. The interlock system operating procedures and behaviour have been validated during real operating conditions of the detector esposed to a particle beam. The satisfactory results of tests take the project to full completion, allowing the plan to reach the âワexitâ stage, when the thermal screen is ready to be installed in the Tracker and ready to be operational

    The Palomar Testbed Interferometer

    The Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI) is a long-baseline infrared interferometer located at Palomar Observatory, California. It was built as a testbed for interferometric techniques applicable to the Keck Interferometer. First fringes were obtained in July 1995. PTI implements a dual-star architecture, tracking two stars simultaneously for phase referencing and narrow-angle astrometry. The three fixed 40-cm apertures can be combined pair-wise to provide baselines to 110 m. The interferometer actively tracks the white-light fringe using an array detector at 2.2 um and active delay lines with a range of +/- 38 m. Laser metrology of the delay lines allows for servo control, and laser metrology of the complete optical path enables narrow-angle astrometric measurements. Yükseltici tip DC-DC dönüştürücünün ortalama durum-uzay tekniğine dayalı küçük-sinyal modeli elde edilmiştir. Ayrık-zaman kontrolör iki ayı yöntem, frekans domeni ve durum-uzay yöntemleri, kullanılarak tasarlanmıştır. Kök-yer eğrisi yöntemi ile integral kontrolör tasarlanmıştır. Durum geribesleme kazanç matrisi hem kutup yerleştirme hem de doğrusal optimal kuadratik regülatör yaklaşımları kullanılarak tasarlanmıştır. Kontrolcülü yükseltici dönüştürücünün performansı MATLAB/SIMULINK ortamında yapılan similasyon çalışmaları ile incelenmiş ve doğrulanmıştır. Tasarlanan kontrolör türleri tasarım metodolojisi, uygulama problemleri ve performans açısından karşılaştırılmıştır. Tasarlanan kontrol yöntemlerinin birbirine yakın bir performansa sahip olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Bu çalışmada, yükseltici tip DC-DC dönüştürücüler için sürekli-hal ve dinamik karakteristik açısından uygun bir performansa sahip kontrolör tasarımı amaçlanmıştır.DC-DC converters are extensively used in modern power electronics devices due to their high efficiency, high power density, high power levels, low cost, and small size. In general, they can be step-up, step-down or step-up/down converters and can have multiple output voltages. Boost converter, (also known as a step-up converter) is a type of switched-mode dc-dc converter which produces output voltage that is greater than input voltage. A small signal modeling based on state space averaging technique for DC-DC Boost converter is carried out. Discrete time controller is designed using two design techniques; frequency domain and state space methods. Root locus technique is used to design an integral controller. A state feedback gain matrix is designed by pole placement technique and Linear Quadratic Optimal Regulator (LQR) methods. The performance of the controlled boost converter are investigated and verified through MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation. Comparison between the designed controllers related to the design methodology, implementation issues and performance is carried out. It is seen that the designed controllers yielded comparable performances. In this study, it is aimed to design a controller for DC-DC boost converter to provide satisfactory performance in term of static, dynamic and steady-state characteristics

    An observer-based attitude and nutation control and flexible dynamic analysis for the NASA Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission

    Current research with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) involves the dynamic modeling and control of the NASA Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) Mission, a. Solar-Terrestrial Probe mission to study Earth\u27s magnetosphere. Four observer-based attitude and nutrition controllers are designed and evaluated to determine the most effective feedback control system as it applies to MMS. Also, a dynamic analysis of each of the four identical satellites\u27 two Axial Double Probe (ADP) booms is performed to provide an understanding of flexible boom dynamics. The Finite Element method is used in evaluating boom modes of vibration for confirmation of NASA GSFC theoretical analysis and use in flexible model development. The dynamic transient and modal extraction technique are investigated for vibration analysis of constrained and unconstrained bodies. A fully flexible boom and rigid spacecraft model is also developed for vibrational analysis under steady-state rotation and thruster loads. Results indicate, however, the need for future research in numerical analysis of propagating systems through finite element methods and in the stability of the observer-based control system. Linear and nonlinear observers are developed through simulations to estimate satellite attitude and angular body rates without the use of rate sensors. Control systems are then developed assuming perfect state measurements. Euler angles are used to describe satellite attitude in this research. Finally, linear and nonlinear (Sliding Mode Control) techniques are implemented in conjunction with the nonlinear observers to complete the observer-based control system. The results of this research show that, of the methods analyzed, both the Extended Kalman Filter and Sliding Mode Observer implemented with Sliding Mode Control yield the most satisfactory performance. These observer-based control systems both meet NASA design requirements while reducing thruster control effort and reducing the effects of measurement noise and spacecraft uncertainties/disturbances. More simulations, however, are needed to verify performance of the proposed observer-based control system over all possible ranges of operation
