Data-driven modeling of the olfactory neural codes and their dynamics in the insect antennal lobe
Recordings from neurons in the insects' olfactory primary processing center,
the antennal lobe (AL), reveal that the AL is able to process the input from
chemical receptors into distinct neural activity patterns, called olfactory
neural codes. These exciting results show the importance of neural codes and
their relation to perception. The next challenge is to \emph{model the
dynamics} of neural codes. In our study, we perform multichannel recordings
from the projection neurons in the AL driven by different odorants. We then
derive a neural network from the electrophysiological data. The network
consists of lateral-inhibitory neurons and excitatory neurons, and is capable
of producing unique olfactory neural codes for the tested odorants.
Specifically, we (i) design a projection, an odor space, for the neural
recording from the AL, which discriminates between distinct odorants
trajectories (ii) characterize scent recognition, i.e., decision-making based
on olfactory signals and (iii) infer the wiring of the neural circuit, the
connectome of the AL. We show that the constructed model is consistent with
biological observations, such as contrast enhancement and robustness to noise.
The study answers a key biological question in identifying how lateral
inhibitory neurons can be wired to excitatory neurons to permit robust activity
patterns
An easy iris center detection method for eye gaze tracking system
Iris center detection accuracy has great impact on eye gaze tracking system performance. This paper proposes an easy and efficient iris center detection method based on modeling the geometric relationship between the detected rough iris center and the two corners of the eye. The method fully considers four states of iris within the eye region, i.e. center, left, right, and upper. The proposed active edge detection algorithm is utilized to extract iris edge points for ellipse fitting. In addition, this paper also presents a predicted edge point algorithm to solve the decrease in ellipse fitting accuracy, when part of the iris becomes hidden from rolling into a nasal or temporal eye corner. The evaluated result of the method on our eye database shows the global average accuracy of 94.3%. Compared with existing methods, our method achieves the highest iris center detection accuracy. Additionally, in order to test the performance of the proposed method in gaze tracking, this paper presents the results of gaze estimation achieved by our eye gaze tracking system
Characteristics of flight simulator visual systems
The physical parameters of the flight simulator visual system that characterize the system and determine its fidelity are identified and defined. The characteristics of visual simulation systems are discussed in terms of the basic categories of spatial, energy, and temporal properties corresponding to the three fundamental quantities of length, mass, and time. Each of these parameters are further addressed in relation to its effect, its appropriate units or descriptors, methods of measurement, and its use or importance to image quality
Spontaneous symmetry breaking in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates
We present an analytical model for the theoretical analysis of spin dynamics
and spontaneous symmetry breaking in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC).
This allows for an excellent intuitive understanding of the processes and
provides good quantitative agreement with experimental results in Phys. Rev.
Lett. 105, 135302 (2010). It is shown that the dynamics of a spinor BEC
initially prepared in an unstable Zeeman state mF=0 (|0>) can be understood by
approximating the effective trapping potential for the state |+-1> with a
cylindrical box potential. The resonances in the creation efficiency of these
atom pairs can be traced back to excitation modes of this confinement. The
understanding of these excitation modes allows for a detailed characterization
of the symmetry breaking mechanism, showing how a twofold spontaneous breaking
of spatial and spin symmetry can occur. In addition a detailed account of the
experimental methods for the preparation and analysis of spinor quantum gases
is given.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figure

A Tentative Gamma-Ray Line from Dark Matter Annihilation at the Fermi Large Area Telescope
The observation of a gamma-ray line in the cosmic-ray fluxes would be a
smoking-gun signature for dark matter annihilation or decay in the Universe. We
present an improved search for such signatures in the data of the Fermi Large
Area Telescope (LAT), concentrating on energies between 20 and 300 GeV. Besides
updating to 43 months of data, we use a new data-driven technique to select
optimized target regions depending on the profile of the Galactic dark matter
halo. In regions close to the Galactic center, we find a 4.6 sigma indication
for a gamma-ray line at 130 GeV. When taking into account the look-elsewhere
effect the significance of the observed excess is 3.2 sigma. If interpreted in
terms of dark matter particles annihilating into a photon pair, the
observations imply a dark matter mass of 129.8\pm2.4^{+7}_{-13} GeV and a
partial annihilation cross-section of = 1.27\pm0.32^{+0.18}_{-0.28}
x 10^-27 cm^3 s^-1 when using the Einasto dark matter profile. The evidence for
the signal is based on about 50 photons; it will take a few years of additional
data to clarify its existence.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables; extended discussion; matches published
