    An effective algorithm for obtaining the whole set of minimal cost pairs of disjoint paths with dual arc costs

    In telecommunication networks design the problem of obtaining optimal (arc or node) disjoint paths, for increasing network reliability, is extremely important. The problem of calculating kc disjoint paths from s to t (two distinct nodes), in a network with kc different (arbitrary) costs on every arc such that the total cost of the paths is minimised, is NP-complete even for kc = 2. When kc = 2 these networks are usually designated as dual arc cost networks. In this paper we propose an exact algorithm for finding the whole set of arc-disjoint path pairs, with minimal cost in a network with dual arc costs. The correctness of the algorithm is based on a condition which guarantees that the optimal path pair cost has been obtained and on a proposition which guarantees that at the end of the algorithm all the optimal pairs have been obtained. The optimality condition is based on the calculation of upper and lower bounds on the optimal cost. Extensive experimentation is presented to show the effectiveness of the algorithm

    Analysis and optimization of highly reliable systems

    In the field of network design, the survivability property enables the network to maintain a certain level of network connectivity and quality of service under failure conditions. In this thesis, survivability aspects of communication systems are studied. Aspects of reliability and vulnerability of network design are also addressed. The contributions are three-fold. First, a Hop Constrained node Survivable Network Design Problem (HCSNDP) with optional (Steiner) nodes is modelled. This kind of problems are N P-Hard. An exact integer linear model is built, focused on networks represented by graphs without rooted demands, considering costs in arcs and in Steiner nodes. In addition to the exact model, the calculation of lower and upper bounds to the optimal solution is included. Models were tested over several graphs and instances, in order to validate it in cases with known solution. An Approximation Algorithm is also developed in order to address a particular case of SNDP: the Two Node Survivable Star Problem (2NCSP) with optional nodes. This problem belongs to the class of N P-Hard computational problems too. Second, the research is focused on cascading failures and target/random attacks. The Graph Fragmentation Problem (GFP) is the result of a worst case analysis of a random attack. A fixed number of individuals for protection can be chosen, and a non-protected target node immediately destroys all reachable nodes. The goal is to minimize the expected number of destroyed nodes in the network. This problem belongs to the N P-Hard class. A mathematical programming formulation is introduced and exact resolution for small instances as well as lower and upper bounds to the optimal solution. In addition to exact methods, we address the GFP by several approaches: metaheuristics, approximation algorithms, polytime methods for specific instances and exact methods in exponential time. Finally, the concept of separability in stochastic binary systems is here introduced. Stochastic Binary Systems (SBS) represent a mathematical model of a multi-component on-off system subject to independent failures. The reliability evaluation of an SBS belongs to the N P-Hard class. Therefore, we fully characterize separable systems using Han-Banach separation theorem for convex sets. Using this new concept of separable systems and Markov inequality, reliability bounds are provided for arbitrary SBS

    Constrained shortest paths for QoS routing and path protection in communication networks.

    The CSDP (k) problem requires the selection of a set of k > 1 link-disjoint paths with minimum total cost and with total delay bounded by a given upper bound. This problem arises in the context of provisioning paths in a network that could be used to provide resilience to link failures. Again we studied the LP relaxation of the ILP formulation of the problem from the primal perspective and proposed an approximation algorithm.We have studied certain combinatorial optimization problems that arise in the context of two important problems in computer communication networks: end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) and fault tolerance. These problems can be modeled as constrained shortest path(s) selection problems on networks with each of their links associated with additive weights representing the cost, delay etc.The problems considered above assume that the network status is known and accurate. However, in real networks, this assumption is not realistic. So we considered the QoS route selection problem under inaccurate state information. Here the goal is to find a path with the highest probability that satisfies a given delay upper bound. We proposed a pseudo-polynomial time approximation algorithm, a fully polynomial time approximation scheme, and a strongly polynomial time heuristic for this problem.Finally we studied the constrained shortest path problem with multiple additive constraints. Using the LARAC algorithm as a building block and combining ideas from mathematical programming, we proposed a new approximation algorithm.First we studied the QoS single route selection problem, i.e., the constrained shortest path (CSP) problem. The goal of the CSP problem is to identify a minimum cost route which incurs a delay less than a specified bound. It can be formulated as an integer linear programming (ILP) problem which is computationally intractable. The LARAC algorithm reported in the literature is based on the dual of the linear programming relaxation of the ILP formulation and gives an approximate solution. We proposed two new approximation algorithms solving the dual problem. Next, we studied the CSP problem using the primal simplex method and exploiting certain structural properties of networks.     A spatial decision support system for designing solid waste collection routes in rural counties

    Because of the increasing need to develop optimized routes for solid waste collection in rural counties, there has been a lot of research on exploring arc routing problems and their efficient solutions. The complex nature of solving arc routing problems lends itself to a GIS-based spatial decision support system. Such a system could combine user knowledge of a problem with heuristic algorithms to obtain arc routing solutions. This thesis presents SWRoute, which is such a system. Developing SWRoute requires three major steps: building a suitable geographic data base, determining and implementing the necessary heuristic algorithmic techniques, and setting up a GIS framework that allows users to manipulate the data inputs and the algorithm outputs. Taken together, these three components form a spatial decision support system for designing solid waste collection routes. The area of study is Hamblen County in East Tennessee. A database of roads in the county was developed using TIGER and other map sources. The demands for solid waste collection were obtained from the Hamblen County solid waste region. SWRoute also uses two modeling algorithms. The first is a heuristic algorithm for generating solutions to the rural arc routing problem. The second algorithm is used to develop lower bounds on candidate solutions. The lower bounds help determine the quality of the heuristic solutions. The SWRoute interface has tools which allow the user to partition a base road network into subnetworks and create a seed node set. The GIS interface is also useful for generating and reporting routes. With the aid of these tools, the user can study and manipulate solutions generated from the algorithms. The results derived from the Hamblen County example indicate how a GIS-based spatial decision support system can help solve complex problems facing rural U.S. counties

    Characterization, design and re-optimization on multi-layer optical networks

    L'augment de volum de tràfic IP provocat per l'increment de serveis multimèdia com HDTV o vídeo conferència planteja nous reptes als operadors de xarxa per tal de proveir transmissió de dades eficient. Tot i que les xarxes mallades amb multiplexació per divisió de longitud d'ona (DWDM) suporten connexions òptiques de gran velocitat, aquestes xarxes manquen de flexibilitat per suportar tràfic d’inferior granularitat, fet que provoca un pobre ús d'ample de banda. Per fer front al transport d'aquest tràfic heterogeni, les xarxes multicapa representen la millor solució. Les xarxes òptiques multicapa permeten optimitzar la capacitat mitjançant l'empaquetament de connexions de baixa velocitat dins de connexions òptiques de gran velocitat. Durant aquesta operació, es crea i modifica constantment una topologia virtual dinàmica gràcies al pla de control responsable d’aquestes operacions. Donada aquesta dinamicitat, un ús sub-òptim de recursos pot existir a la xarxa en un moment donat. En aquest context, una re-optimizació periòdica dels recursos utilitzats pot ser aplicada, millorant així l'ús de recursos. Aquesta tesi està dedicada a la caracterització, planificació, i re-optimització de xarxes òptiques multicapa de nova generació des d’un punt de vista unificat incloent optimització als nivells de capa física, capa òptica, capa virtual i pla de control. Concretament s'han desenvolupat models estadístics i de programació matemàtica i meta-heurístiques. Aquest objectiu principal s'ha assolit mitjançant cinc objectius concrets cobrint diversos temes oberts de recerca. En primer lloc, proposem una metodologia estadística per millorar el càlcul del factor Q en problemes d'assignació de ruta i longitud d'ona considerant interaccions físiques (IA-RWA). Amb aquest objectiu, proposem dos models estadístics per computar l'efecte XPM (el coll d'ampolla en termes de computació i complexitat) per problemes IA-RWA, demostrant la precisió d’ambdós models en el càlcul del factor Q en escenaris reals de tràfic. En segon lloc i fixant-nos a la capa òptica, presentem un nou particionament del conjunt de longituds d'ona que permet maximitzar, respecte el cas habitual, la quantitat de tràfic extra proveït en entorns de protecció compartida. Concretament, definim diversos models estadístics per estimar la quantitat de tràfic donat un grau de servei objectiu, i diferents models de planificació de xarxa amb l'objectiu de maximitzar els ingressos previstos i el valor actual net de la xarxa. Després de resoldre aquests problemes per xarxes reals, concloem que la nostra proposta maximitza ambdós objectius. En tercer lloc, afrontem el disseny de xarxes multicapa robustes davant de fallida simple a la capa IP/MPLS i als enllaços de fibra. Per resoldre aquest problema eficientment, proposem un enfocament basat en sobre-dimensionar l'equipament de la capa IP/MPLS i recuperar la connectivitat i el comparem amb la solució convencional basada en duplicar la capa IP/MPLS. Després de comparar solucions mitjançant models ILP i heurístiques, concloem que la nostra solució permet obtenir un estalvi significatiu en termes de costos de desplegament. Com a quart objectiu, introduïm un mecanisme adaptatiu per reduir l'ús de ports opto-electrònics (O/E) en xarxes multicapa sota escenaris de tràfic dinàmic. Una formulació ILP i diverses heurístiques són desenvolupades per resoldre aquest problema, que permet reduir significativament l’ús de ports O/E en temps molt curts. Finalment, adrecem el problema de disseny resilient del pla de control GMPLS. Després de proposar un nou model analític per quantificar la resiliència en topologies mallades de pla de control, usem aquest model per proposar un problema de disseny de pla de control. Proposem un procediment iteratiu lineal i una heurística i els usem per resoldre instàncies reals, arribant a la conclusió que es pot reduir significativament la quantitat d'enllaços del pla de control sense afectar la qualitat de servei a la xarxa.The explosion of IP traffic due to the increase of IP-based multimedia services such as HDTV or video conferencing poses new challenges to network operators to provide a cost-effective data transmission. Although Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) meshed transport networks support high-speed optical connections, these networks lack the flexibility to support sub-wavelength traffic leading to poor bandwidth usage. To cope with the transport of that huge and heterogeneous amount of traffic, multilayer networks represent the most accepted architectural solution. Multilayer optical networks allow optimizing network capacity by means of packing several low-speed traffic streams into higher-speed optical connections (lightpaths). During this operation, a dynamic virtual topology is created and modified the whole time thanks to a control plane responsible for the establishment, maintenance, and release of connections. Because of this dynamicity, a suboptimal allocation of resources may exist at any time. In this context, a periodically resource reallocation could be deployed in the network, thus improving network resource utilization. This thesis is devoted to the characterization, planning, and re-optimization of next-generation multilayer networks from an integral perspective including physical layer, optical layer, virtual layer, and control plane optimization. To this aim, statistical models, mathematical programming models and meta-heuristics are developed. More specifically, this main objective has been attained by developing five goals covering different open issues. First, we provide a statistical methodology to improve the computation of the Q-factor for impairment-aware routing and wavelength assignment problems (IA-RWA). To this aim we propose two statistical models to compute the Cross-Phase Modulation variance (which represents the bottleneck in terms of computation time and complexity) in off-line and on-line IA-RWA problems, proving the accuracy of both models when computing Q-factor values in real traffic scenarios. Second and moving to the optical layer, we present a new wavelength partitioning scheme that allows maximizing the amount of extra traffic provided in shared path protected environments compared with current solutions. Specifically, we define several statistical models to estimate the traffic intensity given a target grade of service, and different network planning problems for maximizing the expected revenues and net present value. After solving these problems for real networks, we conclude that our proposed scheme maximizes both revenues and NPV. Third, we tackle the design of survivable multilayer networks against single failures at the IP/MPLS layer and WSON links. To efficiently solve this problem, we propose a new approach based on over-dimensioning IP/MPLS devices and lightpath connectivity and recovery and we compare it against the conventional solution based on duplicating backbone IP/MPLS nodes. After evaluating both approaches by means of ILP models and heuristic algorithms, we conclude that our proposed approach leads to significant CAPEX savings. Fourth, we introduce an adaptive mechanism to reduce the usage of opto-electronic (O/E) ports of IP/MPLS-over-WSON multilayer networks in dynamic scenarios. A ILP formulation and several heuristics are developed to solve this problem, which allows significantly reducing the usage of O/E ports in very short running times. Finally, we address the design of resilient control plane topologies in GMPLS-enabled transport networks. After proposing a novel analytical model to quantify the resilience in mesh control plane topologies, we use this model to propose a problem to design the control plane topology. An iterative model and a heuristic are proposed and used to solve real instances, concluding that a significant reduction in the number of control plane links can be performed without affecting the quality of service of the network

    Synthesis, Interdiction, and Protection of Layered Networks

    This research developed the foundation, theory, and framework for a set of analysis techniques to assist decision makers in analyzing questions regarding the synthesis, interdiction, and protection of infrastructure networks. This includes extension of traditional network interdiction to directly model nodal interdiction; new techniques to identify potential targets in social networks based on extensions of shortest path network interdiction; extension of traditional network interdiction to include layered network formulations; and develops models/techniques to design robust layered networks while considering trade-offs with cost. These approaches identify the maximum protection/disruption possible across layered networks with limited resources, find the most robust layered network design possible given the budget limitations while ensuring that the demands are met, include traditional social network analysis, and incorporate new techniques to model the interdiction of nodes and edges throughout the formulations. In addition, the importance and effects of multiple optimal solutions for these (and similar) models is investigated. All the models developed are demonstrated on notional examples and were tested on a range of sample problem sets

    Algorithms for the survivable telecommunications network design problem under dedicated protection

As a design problem, we seek to find 2-edge disjoint paths between every potential origin destination pair such that the fixed costs of installing edges and the routing costs are jointly minimized. Despite the fact that the survivable network design literature is vast, the particular problem at hand incorporating fixed and variable edge costs as well as different cost structures on the two paths has not been studied. Initially, an IP model addressing the proposed problem is developed. In order to solve problems of higher dimensions, different heuristic algorithms are designed and results of a computational study on a large bed of problem instances are reported.Damcı, PelinM.S
