Emotional intelligence: New ability or eclectic traits?

    Get PDF
Some individuals have a greater capacity than others to carry out sophisticated information processing about emotions and emotion-relevant stimuli and to use this information as a guide to thinking and behavior. The authors have termed this set of abilities emotional intelligence (EI). Since the introduction of the concept, however, a schism has developed in which some researchers focus on EI as a distinct group of mental abilities, and other researchers instead study an eclectic mix of positive traits such as happiness, self-esteem, and optimism. Clarifying what EI is and is not can help the field by better distinguishing research that is truly pertinent to EI from research that is not. EI--conceptualized as an ability--is an important variable both conceptually and empirically, and it shows incremental validity for predicting socially relevant outcomes

Junior-senior High School Based on Pesantren Boarding System

The study is aimed to uncover that a boarding system in junior-senior high school (SMP-SMA) Semesta Billingual Boarding School (BBS) Semarang adopted the pesantren style. This is evidenced by the fact that, like pesantren, the typical of boarding school in BBS Semarang puts more emphasis on strengthening the affective (akhlāq) aspects, because of; 1) the curriculum of all subjects in school mutually integrated, 2) the curriculum design by the development of self-habituation, 3) design through creating climate and culture, 4) constitute the hidden curriculum, 5) more "mutually adaptive" and dominated by transmission model rather than transaction and transformation model, 6) can be used as an eclectic systems, between constructivist and non-constructivist, the social and personal model, the information and processing model, the humanism and behavioral oriented. The main purpose of the schools adopts the boarding school system to maintain and improve the quality of learners morals. However by adopting such system, learners can be monitored for almost 24 hours because they had been living in the college. Thus, adopting a boarding school system can be a solution to overcome and reduce morale among students dekandensi Indonesia and even in other countries

IET Communications published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of The Institution of Engineering and TechnologyHybrid processing in millimeter wave (mmWave) communication has been proposed as a solution to reduce the cost and energy consumption by reducing the number of radio-frequency (RF) chains. However, the impact of the inevitable residual transceiver hardware impairments (RTHIs), including the residual additive transceiver hardware impairments (RATHIs) and the amplified thermal noise (ATN), has not been sufficiently studied in mmWave hybrid processing. In this work, the hybrid precoder and combiner are designed, which include both digital and analog processing by taking into account the RATHIs and the ATN. In particular, a thorough study is provided to shed light on the degradation of the spectral efficiency (SE) of the practical system. The outcomes show the steady degradation of the performance by the ATN across all SNR values, which becomes increasingly critical for higher values of its variance. Furthermore, it is shown that RATHIs result in degradation of the system only in the high SNR regime. Hence, their impact in mmWave system operating at low SNRs might be negligible. Moreover, an increase concerning the number of streams differentiates the impact between the transmit and receive RATHIs with the latter having a more severe effect.Peer reviewe

Management of Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Learning Disabilities: A Survey of Paediatric Occupational Therapists in the United Kingdom

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common complex neuropsychiatric disorder frequently overlapping with learning disabilities (LD) in children with average and above intelligence (Biederman et al 1991). The complex needs of these children could be better addressed in a multidisciplinary context (Foy & Earls 2005) within which paediatric occupational therapists may have a significant role. The aim of this study was to identify the interventions used by occupational therapists in the United Kingdom with these children and explore the rationale for their use. The purpose was to provide baseline data to inform multidisciplinary team approaches for the management of these children. A survey, based on postal questionnaires, was conducted among 100 paediatric occupational therapists in the United Kingdom. The effective rate of response was 42%. Both qualitative and quantitative data were gathered and analysed. The findings suggested that therapists tended to use more than one method/ approach in the rehabilitation of these children. The sensory integration approach and the perceptual-motor training were more popular among therapists. A variety of other approaches, used on an individual needs basis, were reportedly used. Future studies to test the effectiveness of reported practices with children with both ADHD and LD are recommended

Outward processing in Central and East European transition countries: Issues and results from German statistics

Our paper explores the recent trends in outward processing (OP) of German firms in former centrally planned economies (CPEs). We argue that OP is an interesting alternative to cross-border trade and equity foreign arrangements. We present the theoretical framework to understand OP as well as some facts and figures which may prove the empirical evidence. Finally, we discuss consequences for corporate restructuring in CPEs.

BRAHMS: Novel middleware for integrated systems computation

Biological computational modellers are becoming increasingly interested in building large, eclectic models, including components on many different computational substrates, both biological and non-biological. At the same time, the rise of the philosophy of embodied modelling is generating a need to deploy biological models as controllers for robots in real-world environments. Finally, robotics engineers are beginning to find value in seconding biomimetic control strategies for use on practical robots. Together with the ubiquitous desire to make good on past software development effort, these trends are throwing up new challenges of intellectual and technological integration (for example across scales, across disciplines, and even across time) - challenges that are unmet by existing software frameworks. Here, we outline these challenges in detail, and go on to describe a newly developed software framework, BRAHMS. that meets them. BRAHMS is a tool for integrating computational process modules into a viable, computable system: its generality and flexibility facilitate integration across barriers, such as those described above, in a coherent and effective way. We go on to describe several cases where BRAHMS has been successfully deployed in practical situations. We also show excellent performance in comparison with a monolithic development approach. Additional benefits of developing in the framework include source code self-documentation, automatic coarse-grained parallelisation, cross-language integration, data logging, performance monitoring, and will include dynamic load-balancing and 'pause and continue' execution. BRAHMS is built on the nascent, and similarly general purpose, model markup language, SystemML. This will, in future, also facilitate repeatability and accountability (same answers ten years from now), transparent automatic software distribution, and interfacing with other SystemML tools. Foreign investors' activities in Eastern Germany motivations and strategies

The paper analyses foreign investors' activities in East Germany in the context of privatization. Based on FDI theories it attempts to explore their motivations and strategies by investigating their home countries as well as their target industries. About 5 p.c. of all privatized enterprises have been acquired by foreigners. Their share in planned investment and planned employment results to be markedly larger. Foreign investors are predominantly originating from those countries which have longstanding economic relations with West Germany. The main part of foreign investment goes into manufacturing industries; into booming as well as into ailing industries. The availability of wellqualified labour appears to be of major importance for nearly all investments while contracting favourable terms of sale and taking advantage of public investment support are especially important for commitments in ailing industries. Germany's EC-membership generates further incentives such as to take advantage of the EC regulatory framework. Using East German production sites as bridgeheads to serve markets in Central Eastern Europe has been a strong motivation in the beginning but meanwhile has lost importance. Comparing foreign to West German investors, by and large their decisions seem to be driven by the same determinants.
