In recent years, mobile data traffic has increased exponentially as a result of widespread popularity and uptake of portable devices, such as smartphones, tablets and laptops. This growth has placed enormous stress on network service providers who are committed to offering the best quality of service to consumer groups. Consequently, telecommunication engineers are investigating innovative solutions to accommodate the additional load offered by growing numbers of mobile users. The fifth generation (5G) of wireless communication standard is expected to provide numerous innovative solutions to meet the growing demand of consumer groups. Accordingly the ultimate goal is to achieve several key technological milestones including up to 1000 times higher wireless area capacity and a significant cut in power consumption. Massive deployment of small cells is likely to be a key innovation in 5G, which enables frequent frequency reuse and higher data rates. Small cells, however, present a major challenge for nodes moving at vehicular speeds. This is because the smaller coverage areas of small cells result in frequent handover, which leads to lower throughput and longer delay. In this thesis, a new mobility management technique is introduced that reduces the number of handovers in a 5G heterogeneous network. This research also investigates techniques to accommodate low latency applications in nodes moving at vehicular speeds

The present wireless networks are equipped with multiple radio links and operate in a collaborative way to enable continuous data transfer even when any link goes down. The IEEE 802.21 is a standard to provide continuous wireless connectivity between heterogeneous link technologies using media independent handover functions as MIHF. The standard supports handover between IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.16, 3GPP cellular networks. The wireless sensor networks (WSN) based on IEEE 802.15.4 consists of sensors to monitor various physical or physiological activities and to transfer the collected data to the remote controlling station using a short range radio. But in this case if the wireless node moves out of each other's communication range data transfer is not possible. So in this paper, the WSN communication protocol is made as a part of the IEEE 802.21 stack to explore the handover feature offered by the standard. The proposed stack has an internal partition to make WSN protocol to operate independently with other similar modules as long as they are in range, and the MIH function gets triggered by the application when the home networks are not available thus to provide handover from other link interfaces. The proposed hardware has IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.16, and 3GPP links which are operated by the MIH functions along with the IEEE 802.15.4 interface. So the WSN modules are provisioned to have connectivity from multiple radio interfaces even if they move out of the coverage range from the current point of access. The proposed primitives for handover between WSN and other links are efficient in providing reliable handoff. In this paper, we address mobility management for 4th generation heterogeneous networks from a quality of service (QoS), optimisation and cross layer design perspective. Users are classified as high profile, normal profile and low profile according to their differentiated service requirements. Congestion avoidance control and adaptive handover mechanisms are implemented for efficient cooperation within the mobile heterogeneous network environment consisting of a TDMA network, ad hoc network and relay nodes. A previous proposed routing algorithm is also revised to include mobility management

In wireless and mobile networks, handover is a complex process that involves multiple layers of protocol and security executions. With the growing popularity of real time communication services such as Voice of IP, a great challenge faced by handover nowadays comes from the impact of security implementations that can cause performance degradation especially for mobile devices with limited resources. Given the existing networks with heterogeneous wireless access technologies, one essential research question that needs be addressed is how to achieve a balance between security and performance during the handover. The variations of security policy and agreement among different services and network vendors make the topic challenging even more, due to the involvement of commercial and social factors. In order to understand the problems and challenges in this field, we study the properties of handover as well as state of the art security schemes to assist handover in wireless IP networks. Based on our analysis, we define a two-phase model to identify the key procedures of handover security in wireless and mobile networks. Through the model we analyze the performance impact from existing security schemes in terms of handover completion time, throughput, and Quality of Services (QoS). As our endeavor of seeking a balance between handover security and performance, we propose the local administrative domain as a security enhanced localized domain to promote the handover performance. To evaluate the performance improvement in local administrative domain, we implement the security protocols adopted by our proposal in the ns-2 simulation environment and analyze the measurement results based on our simulation test

The mass-market adoption of high-end mobile devices and increasing amount of video traffic has led the mobile operators to adopt various solutions to help them cope with the explosion of mobile broadband data traffic, while ensuring high Quality of Service (QoS) levels to their services. Deploying small-cell base stations within the existing macro-cellular networks and offloading traffic from the large macro-cells to the small cells is seen as a promising solution to increase capacity and improve network performance at low cost. Parallel use of diverse technologies is also employed. The result is a heterogeneous network environment (HetNets), part of the next generation network deployments. In this context, this thesis makes a step forward towards the “Always Best Experience” paradigm, which considers mobile users seamlessly roaming in the HetNets environment. Supporting ubiquitous connectivity and enabling very good quality of rich mobile services anywhere and anytime is highly challenging, mostly due to the heterogeneity of the selection criteria, such as: application requirements (e.g., voice, video, data, etc.); different device types and with various capabilities (e.g., smartphones, netbooks, laptops, etc.); multiple overlapping networks using diverse technologies (e.g., Wireless Local Area Networks (IEEE 802.11), Cellular Networks Long Term Evolution (LTE), etc.) and different user preferences. In fact, the mobile users are facing a complex decision when they need to dynamically select the best value network to connect to in order to get the “Always Best Experience”. This thesis presents three major contributions to solve the problem described above: 1) The Location-based Network Prediction mechanism in heterogeneous wireless networks (LNP) provides a shortlist of best available networks to the mobile user based on his location, history record and routing plan; 2) Reputation-oriented Access Network Selection mechanism (RANS) selects the best reputation network from the available networks for the mobile user based on the best trade-off between QoS, energy consumptions and monetary cost. The network reputation is defined based on previous user-network interaction, and consequent user experience with the network. 3) Network Reputation-based Quality Optimization of Video Delivery in heterogeneous networks (NRQOVD) makes use of a reputation mechanism to enhance the video content quality via multipath delivery or delivery adaptation

Multi-Criteria Optimization of Access Selection to Improve the Quality of Experience in Heterogeneous Wireless Access Networks

Wireless technology is one of the revolutionary ad- vancements providing users with ubiquitous data and telephony access anywhere and anytime without any physical connection. The nowadays deployed wireless networks named WiFi, World- wide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems (UMTS) and Long Term Evolution systems (LTE) have different characteristics that make them complementary in term of performance, coverage and cost. This network variety presents an opportunity to provide better services to the end-users given the advances in mobile terminals. To reach this goal, an appropriate automatic network selection (ANS) mechanism, able to always select the best access network, is needed. This consists on constantly monitoring any type of available access networks, automatically selecting and switching to the best one, as the network that maximizes the users quality of experience taking into account their preferences as well as the terminal and network conditions. ANS is a multi dimension decision-making problem which can be solved by finding an appropriate complex trade-off between possibly conflicting criteria. In this paper, we propose an analytical model to capture the preferences of end-users. Based on this model, we design an ANS mechanism that takes into account all aspects of the trade-off between the quality of the connections, the preferences of the end users and the cost. To highlight the benefits of our approach from the perspectives of both end-users and network operator, we have implemented and tested the solution in a multi technologies simulator. Results show that the proposed solution outperforms the main stream approaches
