A survey of variants and extensions of the resource-constrained project scheduling problem
The resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) consists of activities that must be scheduled subject to precedence and resource constraints such that the makespan is minimized. It has become a well-known standard problem in the context of project scheduling which has attracted numerous researchers who developed both exact and heuristic scheduling procedures. However, it is a rather basic model with assumptions that are too restrictive for many practical applications. Consequently, various extensions of the basic RCPSP have been developed. This paper gives an overview over these extensions. The extensions are classified according to the structure of the RCPSP. We summarize generalizations of the activity concept, of the precedence relations and of the resource constraints. Alternative objectives and approaches for scheduling multiple projects are discussed as well. In addition to popular variants and extensions such as multiple modes, minimal and maximal time lags, and net present value-based objectives, the paper also provides a survey of many less known concepts. --project scheduling, modeling, resource constraints, temporal constraints, networks
SLS-PLAN-IT: A knowledge-based blackboard scheduling system for Spacelab life sciences missions
The primary scheduling tool in use during the Spacelab Life Science (SLS-1) planning phase was the operations research (OR) based, tabular form Experiment Scheduling System (ESS) developed by NASA Marshall. PLAN-IT is an artificial intelligence based interactive graphic timeline editor for ESS developed by JPL. The PLAN-IT software was enhanced for use in the scheduling of Spacelab experiments to support the SLS missions. The enhanced software SLS-PLAN-IT System was used to support the real-time reactive scheduling task during the SLS-1 mission. SLS-PLAN-IT is a frame-based blackboard scheduling shell which, from scheduling input, creates resource-requiring event duration objects and resource-usage duration objects. The blackboard structure is to keep track of the effects of event duration objects on the resource usage objects. Various scheduling heuristics are coded in procedural form and can be invoked any time at the user's request. The system architecture is described along with what has been learned with the SLS-PLAN-IT project
An overview of recent research results and future research avenues using simulation studies in project management
This paper gives an overview of three simulation studies in dynamic project scheduling integrating baseline scheduling with risk analysis and project control. This integration is known in the literature as dynamic scheduling. An integrated project control method is presented using a project control simulation approach that combines the three topics into a single decision support system. The method makes use of Monte Carlo simulations and connects schedule risk analysis (SRA) with earned value management (EVM). A corrective action mechanism is added to the simulation model to measure the efficiency of two alternative project control methods. At the end of the paper, a summary of recent and state-of-the-art results is given, and directions for future research based on a new research study are presented
H-word: Supporting job scheduling in Hadoop with workload-driven data redistribution
The final publication is available at http://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-319-44039-2_21Today’s distributed data processing systems typically follow a query shipping approach and exploit data locality for reducing network traffic. In such systems the distribution of data over the cluster resources plays a significant role, and when skewed, it can harm the performance of executing applications. In this paper, we addressthe challenges of automatically adapting the distribution of data in a cluster to the workload imposed by the input applications. We propose a generic algorithm, named H-WorD, which, based on the estimated workload over resources, suggests alternative execution scenarios of tasks, and hence identifies required transfers of input data a priori, for timely bringing data close to the execution. We exemplify our algorithm in the context of MapReduce jobs in a Hadoop ecosystem. Finally, we evaluate our approach and demonstrate the performance gains of automatic data redistribution.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Combining Monte-Carlo and hyper-heuristic methods for the multi-mode resource-constrained multi-project scheduling problem
Multi-mode resource and precedence-constrained project scheduling is a well-known challenging real-world optimisation problem. An important variant of the problem requires scheduling of activities for multiple projects considering availability of local and global resources while respecting a range of constraints. A critical aspect of the benchmarks addressed in this paper is that the primary objective is to minimise the sum of the project completion times, with the usual makespan minimisation as a secondary objective. We observe that this leads to an expected different overall structure of good solutions and discuss the effects this has on the algorithm design. This paper presents a carefully-designed hybrid of Monte-Carlo tree search, novel neighbourhood moves, memetic algorithms, and hyper-heuristic methods. The implementation is also engineered to increase the speed with which iterations are performed, and to exploit the computing power of multicore machines. Empirical evaluation shows that the resulting information-sharing multi-component algorithm significantly outperforms other solvers on a set of “hidden” instances, i.e. instances not available at the algorithm design phase
Modeling and Solving Project Portfolio and Contractor Selection Problem Based on Project Scheduling under Uncertainty
AbstractIn this paper a new formulation of the project portfolio selection problem based on the project schedules in uncertain circumstances have been proposed. The project portfolio selection models usually disregard the project scheduling, whereas is an element of the project selection process. We investigate a project portfolio selection problem based on the schedule of the projects, so that the minimum expected profit would be met in the shortest possible time period. Also due to uncertain nature of durations of the activities, this duration considered as the semi-trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. Finally, a fuzzy linear programming model is developed for the problem, where the results indicated the validity of the presented model
Time-Cost Tradeoff and Resource-Scheduling Problems in Construction: A State-of-the-Art Review
Duration, cost, and resources are defined as constraints in projects. Consequently, Construction manager needs to balance between theses constraints to ensure that project objectives are met. Choosing the best alternative of each activity is one of the most significant problems in construction management to minimize project duration, project cost and also satisfies resources constraints as well as smoothing resources. Advanced computer technologies could empower construction engineers and project managers to make right, fast and applicable decisions based on accurate data that can be studied, optimized, and quantified with great accuracy. This article strives to find the recent improvements of resource-scheduling problems and time-cost trade off and the interacting between them which can be used in innovating new approaches in construction management. To achieve this goal, a state-of-the-art review, is conducted as a literature sample including articles implying three areas of research; time-cost trade off, constrained resources and unconstrained resources. A content analysis is made to clarify contributions and gaps of knowledge to help suggesting and specifying opportunities for future research
