    Sea surface velocities from visible and infrared multispectral atmospheric mapping sensor imagery

    High resolution (100 m), sequential Multispectral Atmospheric Mapping Sensor (MAMS) images were used in a study to calculate advective surface velocities using the Maximum Cross Correlation (MCC) technique. Radiance and brightness temperature gradient magnitude images were formed from visible (0.48 microns) and infrared (11.12 microns) image pairs, respectively, of Chandeleur Sound, which is a shallow body of water northeast of the Mississippi delta, at 145546 GMT and 170701 GMT on 30 Mar. 1989. The gradient magnitude images enhanced the surface water feature boundaries, and a lower cutoff on the gradient magnitudes calculated allowed the undesirable sunglare and backscatter gradients in the visible images, and the water vapor absorption gradients in the infrared images, to be reduced in strength. Requiring high (greater than 0.4) maximum cross correlation coefficients and spatial coherence of the vector field aided in the selection of an optimal template size of 10 x 10 pixels (first image) and search limit of 20 pixels (second image) to use in the MCC technique. Use of these optimum input parameters to the MCC algorithm, and high correlation and spatial coherence filtering of the resulting velocity field from the MCC calculation yielded a clustered velocity distribution over the visible and infrared gradient images. The velocity field calculated from the visible gradient image pair agreed well with a subjective analysis of the motion, but the velocity field from the infrared gradient image pair did not. This was attributed to the changing shapes of the gradient features, their nonuniqueness, and large displacements relative to the mean distance between them. These problems implied a lower repeat time for the imagery was needed in order to improve the velocity field derived from gradient imagery. Suggestions are given for optimizing the repeat time of sequential imagery when using the MCC method for motion studies. Applying the MCC method to the infrared brightness temperature imagery yielded a velocity field which did agree with the subjective analysis of the motion and that derived from the visible gradient imagery. Differences between the visible and infrared derived velocities were 14.9 cm/s in speed and 56.7 degrees in direction. Both of these velocity fields also agreed well with the motion expected from considerations of the ocean bottom topography and wind and tidal forcing in the study area during the 2.175 hour time interval

    Evaluation of Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2A Aerosol Optical Depth Retrievals Across Chinese Cities and Implications for Medium Spatial Resolution Urban Aerosol Monitoring

    In urban environments, aerosol distributions may change rapidly due to building and transport infrastructure and human population density variations. The recent availability of medium resolution Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 satellite data provide the opportunity for aerosol optical depth (AOD) estimation at higher spatial resolution than provided by other satellites. AOD retrieved from 30 m Landsat-8 and 10 m Sentinel-2A data using the Land Surface Reflectance Code (LaSRC) were compared with coincident ground-based Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) Version 3 AOD data for 20 Chinese cities in 2016. Stringent selection criteria were used to select contemporaneous data; only satellite and AERONET data acquired within 10 min were considered. The average satellite retrieved AOD over a 1470 m1470 m window centered on each AERONET site was derived to capture fine scale urban AOD variations. AERONET Level 1.5 (cloud-screened) and Level 2.0 (cloud-screened and also quality assured) data were considered. For the 20 urban AERONET sites in 2016 there were 106 (Level 1.5) and 67 (Level 2.0) Landsat-8 AERONET AOD contemporaneous data pairs, and 118 (Level 1.5) and 89 (Level 2.0) Sentinel-2A AOD data pairs. The greatest AOD values (>1.5) occurred in Beijing, suggesting that the Chinese capital was one of the most polluted cities in China in 2016. The LaSRC Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2A AOD retrievals agreed well with the AERONET AOD data (linear regression slopes > 0.96; coefficient of determination r(exp 2) > 0.90; root mean square deviation < 0.175) and demonstrate that the LaSRC is an effective and applicable medium resolution AOD retrieval algorithm over urban environments. The Sentinel-2A AOD retrievals had better accuracy than the Landsat-8 AOD retrievals, which is consistent with previously published research.The implications of the research and the potential for urban aerosol monitoring by combining the freely available Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 satellite data are discussed

    Characterization of the Earth\u27s surface and atmosphere for multispectral and hyperspectral thermal imagery

    The goal of this research was to develop a new approach to solve the inverse problem of thermal remote sensing of the Earth. This problem falls under a large class of inverse problems that are ill-conditioned because there are many more unknowns than observations. The approach is based on a multivariate analysis technique known as Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA). By collecting two ensembles of observations, it is possible to find the latent dimensionality where the data are maximally correlated. This produces a reduced and orthogonal space where the problem is not ill-conditioned. In this research, CCA was used to extract atmospheric physical parameters such as temperature and water vapor profiles from multispectral and hyperspectral thermal imagery. CCA was also used to infer atmospheric optical properties such as spectral transmission, upwelled radiance, and downwelled radiance. These properties were used to compensate images for atmospheric effects and retrieve surface temperature and emissivity. Results obtained from MODTRAN simulations, the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) Airborne Sensor (MAS), and the MODIS and Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) (MASTER) airborne sensor show that it is feasible to retrieve land surface temperature and emissivity with 1.0 K and 0.01 accuracies, respectively

    Band to Band Calibration and Relative Gain Analysis of Satellite Sensors Using Deep Convective Clouds

    Two calibration techniques were developed in this research. First, a calibration technique, in which calibration was transferred to cirrus band and coastal aerosol band from well calibrated reflective bands of Landsat 8 using SCIAMACHY Deep Convective Cloud (DCC) spectra. Second, a novel method to derive relative gains using DCCs and improve the image quality of cirrus band scenes was developed. DCCs are very cold, bright clouds located in the tropopause layer. At small sun elevation and sensor viewing angles, they act as near Lambertian solar reflectors. They have very high signal to noise ratio and can easily be detected using simple IR threshold. Thus, DCCs are an ideal calibration target. Cirrus band in Landsat 8 has band center at 1375nm. Due to high water vapor absorption at this wavelength it is difficult to calibrate the cirrus band using other standard vicarious calibration methods. Similarly, the coastal aerosol band has short wavelength (443nm). At this wavelength maximum scattering can be observed in the atmosphere, due to which it is difficult to calibrate this band. Thus DCCs are investigated to calibrate these two channels. DCC spectra measured by the SCIAMACHY hyperspectral sensor were used to transfer calibration. The gain estimates after band to band calibration using DCC for the coastal aerosol band was 0.986 ±0.0031 and that for cirrus band was 0.982±0.0398. The primarily target was to estimate gains with uncertainty of less than 5%. The results are within required precision levels and the primarily goal of the research was successfully accomplished. The non-uniformity in detector response can cause visible streaks in the image. To remove these visible streaks, modified histogram equalization method was used in the second algorithm. A large number of DCC scenes were binned and relative gains were derived. Results were validated qualitatively by visual analysis and quantitatively by the streaking metric. The streaking metric was below 0.2 for most of the detector which was the required goal. Visible streaks were removed by applying DCC derived gains and in most of the cases DCC gains outperforms the default gains
