    Millimeter-wave Communication and Radar Sensing — Opportunities, Challenges, and Solutions

    With the development of communication and radar sensing technology, people are able to seek for a more convenient life and better experiences. The fifth generation (5G) mobile network provides high speed communication and internet services with a data rate up to several gigabit per second (Gbps). In addition, 5G offers great opportunities of emerging applications, for example, manufacture automation with the help of precise wireless sensing. For future communication and sensing systems, increasing capacity and accuracy is desired, which can be realized at millimeter-wave spectrum from 30 GHz to 300 GHz with several tens of GHz available bandwidth. Wavelength reduces at higher frequency, this implies more compact transceivers and antennas, and high sensing accuracy and imaging resolution. Challenges arise with these application opportunities when it comes to realizing prototype or demonstrators in practice. This thesis proposes some of the solutions addressing such challenges in a laboratory environment.High data rate millimeter-wave transmission experiments have been demonstrated with the help of advanced instrumentations. These demonstrations show the potential of transceiver chipsets. On the other hand, the real-time communication demonstrations are limited to either low modulation order signals or low symbol rate transmissions. The reason for that is the lack of commercially available high-speed analog-to-digital converters (ADCs); therefore, conventional digital synchronization methods are difficult to implement in real-time systems at very high data rates. In this thesis, two synchronous baseband receivers are proposed with carrier recovery subsystems which only require low-speed ADCs [A][B].Besides synchronization, high-frequency signal generation is also a challenge in millimeter-wave communications. The frequency divider is a critical component of a millimeter-wave frequency synthesizer. Having both wide locking range and high working frequencies is a challenge. In this thesis, a tunable delay gated ring oscillator topology is proposed for dual-mode operation and bandwidth extension [C]. Millimeter-wave radar offers advantages for high accuracy sensing. Traditional millimeter-wave radar with frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW), or continuous-wave (CW), all have their disadvantages. Typically, the FMCW radar cannot share the spectrum with other FMCW radars.\ua0 With limited bandwidth, the number of FMCW radars that could coexist in the same area is limited. CW radars have a limited ambiguous distance of a wavelength. In this thesis, a phase-modulated radar with micrometer accuracy is presented [D]. It is applicable in a multi-radar scenario without occupying more bandwidth, and its ambiguous distance is also much larger than the CW radar. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) radar has similar properties. However, its traditional fast calculation method, fast Fourier transform (FFT), limits its measurement accuracy.     Low Computational Sensing with Goertzel Filtering for Mobile Industrial IoT Devices

    Internet-of Things (IoT) is getting connected to an increasing number of mobile devices such as autonomous vehicles, drones and robots. Termed as Mobile Industrial Internet-of Things (MI²oT) devices in this paper, a key requirement of these devices is to accurately estimate range and Doppler in various applications, in addition to data communication. Research efforts therefore include incorporating MI²-oT devices with high-data rate communications together with Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Radar (FMCW) sensing capabilities. Range and Doppler sensing, in FMCW radars is undertaken by a twostage Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) which is computationally demanding. It is challenging to design baseband processing with FFTs that can be implemented as low computational hardware or application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) in MI²-oT devices. This paper, presents a novel range and Doppler sensing technique based on Goertzel filtering, leading to considerable reduction in computations compared to the FFT. FMCW radar with Goertzel filtering and FFT are examined in three cases viz., sensing the range and velocity of a car, vibration and respiration monitoring. Simulation results show a computation reduction of the order of 6.3×, 7.7× and 8.1× \u1d422\u1d427Giga-operations per second (GOPS) for the three cases respectively. The reduced computations increase the feasibility of implementing range and Doppler sensing in MI²oT devices which have restricted computational resources

    Millimeter-Wave Super-Regenerative Receivers for Wireless Communication and Radar

    Today’s world is becoming increasingly automated and interconnected with billions of smart devices coming online, leading to a steep rise in energy consumption from small microelectronics. This coincides with an urgent push to transform global energy production to green energies, causing disruptions and energy shortages, and making the case for efficient energy use ever more pressing. Two major areas where high growth is expected are the fields of wireless communication and radar sensors. Millimeter-wave frequency bands are planned for fifth-generation (5G) and sixth-generation (6G) cellular communication standards, as well as automotive frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems for driving assistance and automation. Fast silicon-based technologies enable these advances by operating at high maximum frequencies, such as the silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) technologies. However, even the fastest transistors suffer from low and energy expensive gains at millimeter-wave frequencies. Rather than incremental improvements in circuit efficiency using conventional approaches, a disruptive revolution for green microelectronics could be enabled by exploring the low-power benefits of the super-regenerative receiver for some applications. The super-regenerative receiver uses a regenerative oscillator circuit to increase the gain by positive feedback, through coupling energy from the output back into the input. Careful bias and control of the circuit enables a very large gain from a small number of transistors and a very low energy dissipation. Thus, the super-regenerative oscillator could be used to replace amplifier circuits in high data rate wireless communication systems, or as active reflectors to increase the range of FMCW radar systems, greatly reducing the power consumption. The work in this thesis presents fundamental scientific research into the topic of energy-efficient millimeter-wave super-regenerative receivers for use in civilian wireless communication and radar applications. This research work covers the theory, analysis, and simulations, all the way up to the proof of concept, hardware realization, and experimental characterization. Analysis and modeling of regenerative oscillator circuits is presented and used to improve the understanding of the circuit operation, as well as design goals according to the specific application needs. Integrated circuits are investigated and characterized as a proof of concept for a high data rate wireless communication system operating between 140–220 GHz, and an automotive radar system operating at 60 GHz. Amplitude and phase regeneration capabilities for complex modulation are investigated, and principles for spectrum characterization are derived. The circuits are designed and fabricated in a 130 nm SiGe HBT technology, combining bipolar and complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (BiCMOS) transistors. To prove the feasibility of the research concepts, the work achieves a wireless communication link at 16 Gbit/s over 20 cm distance with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), which is a world record for the highest data rate ever reported in super-regenerative circuits. This was powered by a super-regenerative oscillator circuit operating at 180 GHz and providing 58 dB of gain. Energy efficiency is also considerably high, drawing 8.8 mW of dc power consumption, which corresponds to a highly efficient 0.6 pJ/bit. Packaging and module integration innovations were implemented for the system experiments, and additional broadband circuits were investigated to generate custom quench waveforms to further enhance the data rate. For radar active reflectors, a regenerative gain of 80 dB is achieved at 60 GHz from a single circuit, which is the best in its frequency range, despite a low dc power consumption of 25 mW

    Active Backscattering Positioning System Using Innovative Harmonic Oscillator Tags for Future Internet of Things: Theory and Experiments

    RÉSUMÉ D'ici 2020, l'Internet des objets (IoT) permettra probablement de créer 25 milliards d'objets connectés, 44 ZB de données et de débloquer 11 000 milliards de dollars d’opportunités commerciales. Par conséquent, ce sujet a suscité d’énormes intérêts de recherche dans le monde académique entier. L'une des technologies clés pour l'IoT concerne le positionnement physique intérieur précis. Le principal objectif dans ce domaine est le développement d'un système de positionnement intérieur avec une grande précision, une haute résolution, un fonctionnement à plusieurs cibles, un faible coût, un faible encombrement et une faible consommation d'énergie. Le système de positionnement intérieur conventionnel basé sur les technologies de Wi-Fi ou d'identification par radiofréquence (RFID) ne peut répondre à ces exigences. Principalement parce que leur appareil et leur signal ne sont pas conçus spécialement pour atteindre les objectifs visés. Les chercheurs ont découvert qu'en mettant en oeuvre de différents types de modulation sur les étiquettes, le radar à onde continue (CW) et ses dérivés deviennent des solutions prometteuses. Les activités de recherche présentées dans cette thèse sont menées dans le but de développer des systèmes de positionnement en intérieur bidimensionnel (2-D) à plusieurs cibles basées sur des étiquettes actives à rétrodiffusion harmonique avec une technique à onde continue modulée en fréquence (FMCW). Les contributions de cette thèse peuvent être résumées comme suit: Tout d'abord, la conception d'un circuit actif harmonique, plus spécifiquement une classe d'oscillateurs harmoniques innovants utilisée comme composant central des étiquettes actives dans notre système, implique une méthodologie de conception de signal de grande taille et des installations de caractérisation. L’analyseur de réseau à grand signal (LSNA) est un instrument émergent basé sur les fondements théoriques du cadre de distorsion polyharmonique (PHD). Bien qu'ils soient disponibles dans le commerce depuis 2008, des organismes de normalisation et de recherche tels que l’Institut national des normes et de la technologie (NIST) des États-Unis travaillent toujours à la mise au point d'un standard largement reconnu permettant d'évaluer et de comparer leurs performances. Dans ce travail, un artefact de génération multi-harmonique pour la vérification LSNA est développé. C'est un dispositif actif capable de générer les 5 premières harmoniques d'un signal d'entrée avec une réponse ultra-stables en amplitude et en phase, quelle que soit la variation de l'impédance de la charge.----------ABSTRACT By 2020, the internet of things (IoT) will probably enable 25 billion connected objects, create 44 ZB data and unlock 11 trillion US dollar business opportunities. Therefore, this topic has been attracting tremendous research interests in the entire academic world. One of the key enabling technologies for IoT is concerned with accurate indoor physical positioning. The development of such an indoor positioning system with high accuracy, high resolution, multitarget operation, low cost, small footprint, and low power consumption is the major objective in this area. The conventional indoor positioning system based on WiFi or radiofrequency identification (RFID) technology cannot fulfill these requirements mainly because their device and signal are not purposely designed for achieving the targeted goals. Researchers have found that by implementing different types of modulation on the tags, continuous-wave (CW) radar and its derivatives become promising solutions. The research activities presented in this Ph.D. thesis are carried out towards the goal of developing multitarget two-dimensional (2-D) indoor positioning systems based on harmonic backscattering active tags together with a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) technique. Research contributions of this thesis can be summarized as follows: First of all, the design of a harmonic active circuit, more specifically, a class of innovative harmonic oscillators used as the core component of active tags in our system, involves a large signal design methodology and characterization facilities. The large signal network analyzer (LSNA) is an emerging instrument based on the theoretical foundation for the Poly-Harmonic Distortion (PHD) framework. Although they have been commercially available since 2008, standard and research organizations such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the US are still working towards a widely-recognized standard to evaluate and cross-reference their performances. In this work, a multi-harmonic generation artifact for LSNA verification is developed. It is an active device that can generate the first 5 harmonics of an input signal with ultra-stable amplitude and phase response regardless of the load impedance variation

    Efficient Continuous-Time Sigma-Delta Converters for High Frequency Applications

    Over the years Continuous-Time (CT) Sigma-Delta (ΣΔ) modulators have received a lot of attention due to their ability to efficiently digitize a variety of signals, and suitability for many different applications. Because of their tolerance to component mismatch, the easy to drive input structure, as well as intrinsic anti-aliasing filtering and noise shaping abilities, CTΣΔ modulators have become one of the most popular data-converter type for high dynamic range and moderate/wide bandwidth. This trend is the result of faster CMOS technologies along with design innovations such as better architectures and faster amplifiers. In other words, CTΣΔ modulators are starting to offer the best of both worlds, with high resolution and high bandwidth. This dissertation focuses on the bandwidth and resolution of CTΣΔ modulators. The goal of this research is to use the noise shaping benefits of CTΣΔ modulators for different wireless applications, while achieving high resolution and/or wide bandwidth. For this purpose, this research focuses on two different application areas that demand speed and resolution. These are a low-noise high-resolution time-to-digital converter (TDC), ideal for digital phase lock loops (PLL), and a very high-speed, wide-bandwidth CTΣΔ modulator for wireless communication. The first part of this dissertation presents a new noise shaping time-to-digital converter, based on a CTΣΔ modulator. This is intended to reduce the in-band phase noise of a high frequency digital phase lock loop (PLL) without reducing its loop bandwidth. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed TDC, 30GHz and a 40GHz fractional-N digital PLL are designed as a signal sources for a 240GHz FMCW radar system. Both prototypes are fabricated in a 65nm CMOS process. The standalone TDC achieves 81dB dynamic range and 13.2 equivalent number of bits (ENOB) with 176fs integrated-rms noise from 1MHz bandwidth. The in-band phase noise of the 30GHz digital fractional-N PLL is measured as -87dBc/Hz at a 100kHz offset which is equivalent to -212.6dBc/Hz2 normalized in-band phase noise. The second part of this dissertation focuses on high-speed (GS/s) CTΣΔ modulators for wireless communication, and introduces a new time-interleaved reference data weighted averaging (TI-RDWA) architecture suitable for GS/s CTΣΔ modulators. This new architecture shapes the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) mismatch effects in a CTΣΔ modulator at GS/s operating speeds. It allows us to use smaller DAC unit sizes to reduce area and power consumption for the same bandwidth.     Design of a Dual Band Local Positioning System

    This work presents a robust dual band local positioning system (LPS) working in the 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz industrial science medical (ISM) bands. Position measurement is based on the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar approach, which uses radio frequency (RF) chirp signals for propagation time and therefore distance measurements. Contrary to state of the art LPS, the presented system uses data from both bands to improve accuracy, precision and robustness. A complete system prototype is designed consisting of base stations and tags encapsulating most of the RF and analogue signal processing in custom integrated circuits. This design approach allows to reduce size and power consumption compared to a hybrid system using off-the-shelf components. Key components are implemented using concepts, which support operation in multiple frequency bands, namely, the receiver consisting of a low noise amplifier (LNA), mixer, frequency synthesizer with a wide band voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) having broadband chirp generation capabilities and a dual band power amplifier. System imperfections occurring in FMCW radar systems are modelled. Effects neglected in literature such as compression, intermodulation, the influence of automatic gain control, blockers and spurious emissions are modeled. The results are used to derive a specification set for the circuit design. Position estimation from measured distances is done using an enhanced version of the grid search algorithm, which makes use of data from multiple frequency bands. The algorithm is designed to be easily and efficiently implemented in embedded systems. Measurements show a coverage range of the system of at least 245m. Ranging accuracy in an outdoor scenario can be as low as 8.2cm. Comparative dual band position measurements prove an effective outlier filtering in indoor and outdoor scenarios compared to single band results, yielding in a large gain of accuracy. Positioning accuracy in an indoor scenario with an area of 276m² can be improved from 1.27m at 2.4GHz and 1.86m at 5.8GHz to only 0.38m in the dual band case, corresponding to an improvement by at least a factor of 3.3. In a large outdoor scenario of 4.8 km², accuracy improves from 1.88m at 2.4GHz and 5.93m at 5.8GHz to 0.68m with dual band processing, which is a factor of at least 2.8.Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit dem Entwurf eines robusten lokalen Positionierungssystems (LPS), welches in den lizenzfreien Frequenzbereichen für industrielle, wissenschaftliche und medizinische Zwecke (industrial, scientific, medical, ISM) bei 2,4GHz und 5,8GHz arbeitet. Die Positionsbestimmung beruht auf dem Prinzip des frequenzmodulierten Dauerstrichradars (frequency modulated continuous wave, FMCW-Radar), welches hochfrequente Rampensignale für Laufzeitmessungen und damit Abstandsmessungen benutzt. Im Gegensatz zu aktuellen Arbeiten auf diesem Gebiet benutzt das vorgestellte System Daten aus beiden Frequenzbändern zur Erhöhung der Genauigkeit und Präzision sowie Verbesserung der Robustheit. Ein Prototyp des kompletten Systems bestehend aus Basisstationen und mobilen Stationen wurde entworfen. Fast die gesamte analoge hochfrequente Signalverarbeitungskette wurde als anwendungsspezifische integrierte Schaltung realisiert. Verglichen mit Systemen aus Standardkomponenten erlaubt dieser Ansatz die Miniaturisierung der Systemkomponenten und die Einsparung von Leistung. Schlüsselkomponenten wurden mit Konzepten für mehrbandige oder breitbandige Schaltungen entworfen. Dabei wurden Sender und Empfänger bestehend aus rauscharmem Verstärker, Mischer und Frequenzsynthesizer mit breitbandiger Frequenzrampenfunktion implementiert. Außerdem wurde ein Leistungsverstärker für die gleichzeitige Nutzung der beiden definierten Frequenzbänder entworfen. Um Spezifikationen für den Schaltungsentwurf zu erhalten, wurden in der Fachliteratur vernachlässigte Nichtidealitäten von FMCW-Radarsystemen modelliert. Dazu gehören Signalverzerrungen durch Kompression oder Intermodulation, der Einfluss der automatischen Verstärkungseinstellung sowie schmalbandige Störer und Nebenschwingungen. Die Ergebnisse der Modellierung wurden benutzt, um eine Spezifikation für den Schaltungsentwurf zu erhalten. Die Schätzung der Position aus gemessenen Abständen wurde über eine erweiterte Version des Gittersuchalgorithmus erreicht. Dieser nutzt die Abstandsmessdaten aus beiden Frequenzbändern. Der Algorithmus ist so entworfen, dass er effizient in einem eingebetteten System implementiert werden kann. Messungen zeigen eine maximale Reichweite des Systems von mindestens 245m. Die Genauigkeit von Abstandsmessungen im Freiland beträgt 8,2cm. Positionsmessungen wurden unter Verwendung beider Einzelbänder durchgeführt und mit den Ergebnissen des Zweiband-Gittersuchalgorithmus verglichen. Damit konnte eine starke Verbesserung der Positionsgenauigkeit erreicht werden. Die Genauigkeit in einem Innenraum mit einer Grundfläche von 276m² kann verbessert werden von 1,27m bei 2,4GHz und 1,86m bei 5,8GHz zu nur 0,38m im Zweibandverfahren. Das entspricht einer Verbesserung um einen Faktor von mindestens 3,3. In einem größeren Außenszenario mit einer Fläche von 4,8 km² verbessert sich die Genauigkeit um einen Faktor von mindestens 2,8 von 1,88m bei 2,4GHz und 5,93m bei 5,8GHz auf 0,68m bei Nutzung von Daten aus beiden Frequenzbändern

    Development and Experimental Analysis of Wireless High Accuracy Ultra-Wideband Localization Systems for Indoor Medical Applications

    This dissertation addresses several interesting and relevant problems in the field of wireless technologies applied to medical applications and specifically problems related to ultra-wideband high accuracy localization for use in the operating room. This research is cross disciplinary in nature and fundamentally builds upon microwave engineering, software engineering, systems engineering, and biomedical engineering. A good portion of this work has been published in peer reviewed microwave engineering and biomedical engineering conferences and journals. Wireless technologies in medicine are discussed with focus on ultra-wideband positioning in orthopedic surgical navigation. Characterization of the operating room as a medium for ultra-wideband signal transmission helps define system design requirements. A discussion of the first generation positioning system provides a context for understanding the overall system architecture of the second generation ultra-wideband positioning system outlined in this dissertation. A system-level simulation framework provides a method for rapid prototyping of ultra-wideband positioning systems which takes into account all facets of the system (analog, digital, channel, experimental setup). This provides a robust framework for optimizing overall system design in realistic propagation environments. A practical approach is taken to outline the development of the second generation ultra-wideband positioning system which includes an integrated tag design and real-time dynamic tracking of multiple tags. The tag and receiver designs are outlined as well as receiver-side digital signal processing, system-level design support for multi-tag tracking, and potential error sources observed in dynamic experiments including phase center error, clock jitter and drift, and geometric position dilution of precision. An experimental analysis of the multi-tag positioning system provides insight into overall system performance including the main sources of error. A five base station experiment shows the potential of redundant base stations in improving overall dynamic accuracy. Finally, the system performance in low signal-to-noise ratio and non-line-of-sight environments is analyzed by focusing on receiver-side digitally-implemented ranging algorithms including leading-edge detection and peak detection. These technologies are aimed at use in next-generation medical systems with many applications including surgical navigation, wireless telemetry, medical asset tracking, and in vivo wireless sensors
