    Stochastic level-set method for shape optimisation

    We present a new method for stochastic shape optimisation of engineering structures. The method generalises an existing deterministic scheme, in which the structure is represented and evolved by a level-set method coupled with mathematical programming. The stochastic element of the algorithm is built on the methods of statistical mechanics and is designed so that the system explores a Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution of structures. In non-convex optimisation problems, the deterministic algorithm can get trapped in local optima: the stochastic generalisation enables sampling of multiple local optima, which aids the search for the globally-optimal structure. The method is demonstrated for several simple geometrical problems, and a proof-of-principle calculation is shown for a simple engineering structure.Comment: 17 pages, 10 fig

    Object-Based Greenhouse Mapping Using Very High Resolution Satellite Data and Landsat 8 Time Series

    Greenhouse mapping through remote sensing has received extensive attention over the last decades. In this article, the innovative goal relies on mapping greenhouses through the combined use of very high resolution satellite data (WorldView-2) and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) time series within a context of an object-based image analysis (OBIA) and decision tree classification. Thus, WorldView-2 was mainly used to segment the study area focusing on individual greenhouses. Basic spectral information, spectral and vegetation indices, textural features, seasonal statistics and a spectral metric (Moment Distance Index, MDI) derived from Landsat 8 time series and/or WorldView-2 imagery were computed on previously segmented image objects. In order to test its temporal stability, the same approach was applied for two different years, 2014 and 2015. In both years, MDI was pointed out as the most important feature to detect greenhouses. Moreover, the threshold value of this spectral metric turned to be extremely stable for both Landsat 8 and WorldView-2 imagery. A simple decision tree always using the same threshold values for features from Landsat 8 time series and WorldView-2 was finally proposed. Overall accuracies of 93.0% and 93.3% and kappa coefficients of 0.856 and 0.861 were attained for 2014 and 2015 datasets, respectively

    Forced Oscillation Source Location via Multivariate Time Series Classification

    Precisely locating low-frequency oscillation sources is the prerequisite of suppressing sustained oscillation, which is an essential guarantee for the secure and stable operation of power grids. Using synchrophasor measurements, a machine learning method is proposed to locate the source of forced oscillation in power systems. Rotor angle and active power of each power plant are utilized to construct multivariate time series (MTS). Applying Mahalanobis distance metric and dynamic time warping, the distance between MTS with different phases or lengths can be appropriately measured. The obtained distance metric, representing characteristics during the transient phase of forced oscillation under different disturbance sources, is used for offline classifier training and online matching to locate the disturbance source. Simulation results using the four-machine two-area system and IEEE 39-bus system indicate that the proposed location method can identify the power system forced oscillation source online with high accuracy.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures.     This paper describes the methods used to construct an index to measure the maritime potential of nations. This prototype uses a limited number of variables to measure (a) the locational advantage of having a long coastline in comparison to the landmass (Maritime Potential Index MPI) , (b) the maritime economy (MEI) and (c) the degree a nation or region has utilized its maritime potential (OI). A timeseries of data from 2000 to 2005 for ASEAN states are used to develop the prototype. It is planned to develop the index further by adding variables and extending the regional coverage to all states of Malaysia
