Towards a Cloud-Based Service for Maintaining and Analyzing Data About Scientific Events
We propose the new cloud-based service OpenResearch for managing and
analyzing data about scientific events such as conferences and workshops in a
persistent and reliable way. This includes data about scientific articles,
participants, acceptance rates, submission numbers, impact values as well as
organizational details such as program committees, chairs, fees and sponsors.
OpenResearch is a centralized repository for scientific events and supports
researchers in collecting, organizing, sharing and disseminating information
about scientific events in a structured way. An additional feature currently
under development is the possibility to archive web pages along with the
extracted semantic data in order to lift the burden of maintaining new and old
conference web sites from public research institutions. However, the main
advantage is that this cloud-based repository enables a comprehensive analysis
of conference data. Based on extracted semantic data, it is possible to
determine quality estimations, scientific communities, research trends as well
the development of acceptance rates, fees, and number of participants in a
continuous way complemented by projections into the future. Furthermore, data
about research articles can be systematically explored using a content-based
analysis as well as citation linkage. All data maintained in this
crowd-sourcing platform is made freely available through an open SPARQL
endpoint, which allows for analytical queries in a flexible and user-defined
way.Comment: A completed version of this paper had been accepted in SAVE-SD

Personalization via collaboration in web retrieval systems: a context based approach
World Wide Web is a source of information, and searches on the Web can be analyzed to detect patterns in Web users' search behaviors and information needs to effectively handle the users' subsequent needs. The rationale is that the information need of a user at a particular time point occurs in a particular context, and queries are derived from that need. In this paper, we discuss an extension of our personalization approach that was originally developed for a traditional bibliographic retrieval system but has been adapted and extended with a collaborative model for the Web retrieval environment. We start with a brief introduction of our personalization approach in a traditional information retrieval system. Then, based on the differences in the nature of documents, users and search tasks between traditional and Web retrieval environments, we describe our extensions of integrating collaboration in personalization in the Web retrieval environment. The architecture for the extension integrates machine learning techniques for the purpose of better modeling users' search tasks. Finally, a user-oriented evaluation of Web-based adaptive retrieval systems is presented as an important aspect of the overall strategy for personalization
From Artifacts to Aggregations: Modeling Scientific Life Cycles on the Semantic Web
In the process of scientific research, many information objects are
generated, all of which may remain valuable indefinitely. However, artifacts
such as instrument data and associated calibration information may have little
value in isolation; their meaning is derived from their relationships to each
other. Individual artifacts are best represented as components of a life cycle
that is specific to a scientific research domain or project. Current cataloging
practices do not describe objects at a sufficient level of granularity nor do
they offer the globally persistent identifiers necessary to discover and manage
scholarly products with World Wide Web standards. The Open Archives
Initiative's Object Reuse and Exchange data model (OAI-ORE) meets these
requirements. We demonstrate a conceptual implementation of OAI-ORE to
represent the scientific life cycles of embedded networked sensor applications
in seismology and environmental sciences. By establishing relationships between
publications, data, and contextual research information, we illustrate how to
obtain a richer and more realistic view of scientific practices. That view can
facilitate new forms of scientific research and learning. Our analysis is
framed by studies of scientific practices in a large, multi-disciplinary,
multi-university science and engineering research center, the Center for
Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS).Comment: 28 pages. To appear in the Journal of the American Society for

Embedding the Library into Scientific and Scholarly Communication through Knowledge Management
Knowledge management is a new role for academic research libraries
that has the potential to integrate the library into scholarly and scientific
communication in a significant way. Work in knowledge management
is advancing in both the sciences and humanities. The Genome Data
Base at the Johns Hopkins University is currently the most advanced
knowledge management prototype. As part of its new Center for
Knowledge Management, the University of California, San Francisco
is undertaking several initiatives to create a campuswide knowledge
management environment.published or submitted for publicatio
Scientific publication services are changing drastically, researchers demand intelligent search services to discover and relate scientific publications. Publishersneed to incorporate semantic information to better organize their digital assets and make publications more discoverable. In this paper, we present the on-going work to publish a subset of scientific publications of CONICET Digital as Linked Open Data. The objective of this work is to improve the recovery andreuse of data through Semantic Web technologies and Linked Data in the domain of scientific publications. To achieve these goals, Semantic Web standards and reference RDF schema?s have been taken into account (Dublin Core, FOAF, VoID, etc.). The conversion and publication process is guided by the methodological guidelines for publishing government linked data. We also outline how these data can be linked to other datasets DBLP, WIKIDATA and DBPEDIA on the web of data. Finally, we show some examples of queries that answer questions that initially CONICET Digital does not allowFil: Zárate, Marcos Daniel. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas.
