The retinal fundus images are used in the treatment and diagnosis of several eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. This paper proposes a new method to detect the optic disc (OD) automatically, due to the fact that the knowledge of the OD location is essential to the automatic analysis of retinal images. Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is an optimization algorithm inspired by the foraging behaviour of some ant species that has been applied in image processing for edge detection. Recently, the ACO was used in fundus images to detect edges, and therefore, to segment the OD and other anatomical retinal structures. We present an algorithm for the detection of OD in the retina which takes advantage of the Gabor wavelet transform, entropy and ACO algorithm. Forty images of the retina from DRIVE database were used to evaluate the performance of our method

. Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is an optimization algorithm which can be used for image edge detection. In traditional ACO, the initial ant are randomly distributed. This condition can cause an imbalance ants distribution. Based on this problem, a modified ant distribution in ACO is proposed to optimize the deployment of ant based gradient. Gradient value is used to determine the placement of the ants. Ants are not distributed randomly, but are placed in the highest gradient. This method is expected to be used to optimize the path discovery. Based on the test results, the use of the proposed ACO modification can obtain an average value of the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) of 12.724. Meanwhile, the use of the traditional ACO can obtain an average value of PSNR of 12.268. These results indicate that the ACO modification is capable of generating output image better than traditional ACO in which ants are initially distributed randomly

Noisy images edge detection: Ant colony optimization algorithm

The edges of an image define the image boundary. When the image is noisy, it does not become easy to identify the edges. Therefore, a method requests to be developed that can identify edges clearly in a noisy image. Many methods have been proposed earlier using filters, transforms and wavelets with Ant colony optimization (ACO) that detect edges. We here used ACO for edge detection of noisy images with Gaussian noise and salt and pepper noise. As the image edge frequencies are close to the noise frequency band, the edge detection using the conventional edge detection methods is challenging. The movement of ants depends on local discrepancy of image’s intensity value. The simulation results compared with existing conventional methods and are provided to support the superior performance of ACO algorithm in noisy images edge detection. Canny, Sobel and Prewitt operator have thick, non continuous edges and with less clear image content. But the applied method gives thin and clear edges

Edge Detection: A Collection of Pixel based Approach for Colored Images

The existing traditional edge detection algorithms process a single pixel on an image at a time, thereby calculating a value which shows the edge magnitude of the pixel and the edge orientation. Most of these existing algorithms convert the coloured images into gray scale before detection of edges. However, this process leads to inaccurate precision of recognized edges, thus producing false and broken edges in the image. This paper presents a profile modelling scheme for collection of pixels based on the step and ramp edges, with a view to reducing the false and broken edges present in the image. The collection of pixel scheme generated is used with the Vector Order Statistics to reduce the imprecision of recognized edges when converting from coloured to gray scale images. The Pratt Figure of Merit (PFOM) is used as a quantitative comparison between the existing traditional edge detection algorithm and the developed algorithm as a means of validation. The PFOM value obtained for the developed algorithm is 0.8480, which showed an improvement over the existing traditional edge detection algorithms.Comment: 5 Page

Image Edge Feature Extraction and Refining Based on Genetic-Ant Colony Algorithm

    Get PDF
Edge is composed by a collection of its nearby pixels which has a step change or changes in roof, an image is an information system and most of its information comes from the edges. This paper gives a brief overview of the status and the importance of image edge detection and introduces the research status of the image edge detection. After that, it introduces the basic principle and the main steps of the genetic algorithm and ant colony algorithm. On the basis of these, the paper proposed a new hybrid algorithm for the image edge extraction and refining, which combined the genetic algorithm and ant colony algorithm. Through the analysis of the time-speed graph of the genetic algorithm and the ant colony algorithm, we can find the best fusion point between the genetic algorithm and the ant colony algorithm. The experiment indicated the proposed hybrid algorithm can make the full use of the image information, the simulation time is shorter, the image edge is more continuous, and preserved the outline of original image more completely

An ant colony based model to optimize parameters in industrial vision

Industrial vision constitutes an efficient way to resolve quality control problems. It proposes a wide variety of relevant operators to accomplish controlling tasks in vision systems. However, the installation of these systems awaits for a precise parameter tuning, which remains a very difficult exercise. The manual parameter adjustment can take a lot of time, if precision is expected, by revising many operators. In order to save time and get more precision, a solution is to automate this task by using optimization approaches (mathematical models, population models, learning models...). This paper proposes an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) based model. The process considers each ant as a potential solution, and then by an interacting mechanism, ants converge to the optimal solution. The proposed model is illustrated by some image processing applications giving very promising results. Compared to other approaches, the proposed one is very hopeful.Industrial vision constitutes an efficient way to resolve quality control problems.
