Analysis and application of hop count in multi-hop wireless ad-hoc networks
Hop count, i.e., the number of wireless hops a packet has to go through to reach the destination, is a fundamental metric in multi-hop wireless ad-hoc networks. Network performance, such as throughput, end-to-end delay, energy consumption, and so on, depends critically on hop count. Previous work on modeling hop count is limited in making unrealistic simplifying assumptions either at the physical or network, or both layers of the communication protocol stack. A key contribution of this thesis is to present an analytical model to derive the probability distribution of hop count under realistic assumptions at both physical and network layers. Specifically, the model considers a log-normal shadowing radio propagation capable of accommodating the random signal fading observed in most wireless communication environments, and the widely used geographic routing at the network layer. Validation of the model is achieved by a comprehensive set of simulation experiments including a trace driven simulation of a real-word vehicular ad-hoc network. The model reveals that the presence of randomness in radio propagation reduces the required number of hops to reach a given destination significantly. To demonstrate the utility of the proposed hop count model, the thesis proposes three new applications which address some of the key challenges in multi-hop wireless networks. The first application derives the per-node packet forwarding load in multi-hop wireless sensor networks and reveals that the nodes in the vicinity of the base station has a significantly less forwarding load than previously thought under simplifying radio propagation and routing assumptions. The second application demonstrates that using hop count as a measure of distance traveled by a data packet, geocasting can be achieved in multi-hop wireless networks in situations when some of the network nodes do not have access to reliable location information. Finally, the proposed hop count model is used to evaluate the performance of the third application which demonstrates that the overhead of geographic routing can be reduced significantly by embracing a position update philosophy which adapts to the mobility and communication patterns of the underlying ad-hoc network
DYNAMIC ROUTING WITH CROSS-LAYER ADAPTATIONS FOR MULTI-HOP WIRELESS NETWORKS
In recent years there has been a proliferation of research on a number of wireless multi-hop networks that include mobile ad-hoc networks, wireless mesh networks, and wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Routing protocols in such networks are of- ten required to meet design objectives that include a combination of factors such as throughput, delay, energy consumption, network lifetime etc. In addition, many mod- ern wireless networks are equipped with multi-channel radios, where channel selection plays an important role in achieving the same design objectives. Consequently, ad- dressing the routing problem together with cross-layer adaptations such as channel selection is an important issue in such networks. In this work, we study the joint routing and channel selection problem that spans two domains of wireless networks. The first is a cost-effective and scalable wireless-optical access networks which is a combination of high-capacity optical access and unethered wireless access. The joint routing and channel selection problem in this case is addressed under an anycasting paradigm. In addition, we address two other problems in the context of wireless- optical access networks. The first is on optimal gateway placement and network planning for serving a given set of users. And the second is the development of an analytical model to evaluate the performance of the IEEE 802.11 DCF in radio-over- fiber wireless LANs. The second domain involves resource constrained WSNs where we focus on route and channel selection for network lifetime maximization. Here, the problem is further exacerbated by distributed power control, that introduces addi- tional design considerations. Both problems involve cross-layer adaptations that must be solved together with routing. Cross-Layer Design for QoS Routing in Multi-Hop Wireless Networks
Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) are gaining increasing popularity in recent years because of their ease of deployment. They are distributed, dynamic, and self-configurable without infrastructure support. Routing in ad hoc networks is a challenging task because of the MANET dynamic nature. Hence, researchers were focused in designing best-effort distributed and dynamic routing protocols to ensure optimum network operations in an unpredictable wireless environment. Nowadays, there is an increased demand on multimedia applications (stringent delay and reliability requirements), which makes a shift from best-effort services to Quality of Services.
Actually, the challenge in wireless ad hoc networks is that neighbor nodes share the same channel and they take part in forwarding packets. Therefore, the total effective channel capacity is not only limited by the raw channel capacity but is also limited by the interactions and interferences among neighboring nodes. Thus, such factors should be taken in consideration in order to offer QoS routing. While, some of the distributed QoS route selection algorithms assume the availability of such information, others propose mechanisms to estimate them.
The goals of this thesis are: (i) to analyze the performance of IEEE 802.11 MAC mechanism in non-saturation conditions, (ii) to use the analysis in the context of multi-hop ad hoc networks, (iii) to derive theoretical limits for nodes performance in multi-hop ad hoc networks, (iv) to use the multi-hop analysis in QoS route selection.
We start the thesis by proposing a discrete-time 3D Markov chain model to analyze the saturation performance of the RTS/CTS access mode. This model integrates the backoff countdown process, retransmission retry limits, and transmission errors into one model. The impact of system parameters (e.g., number of nodes, packet size, retry limits, and BERs) are analyzed. Next, we extend the 3D model to analyze the performance under non-saturation conditions and finite buffer capacity using two different approaches. First, we extend the 3D model into a 4D model to integrate the transmission buffer behavior. Second, we replace the 4D model by an M/G/1/K queueing system model with independent samples from the saturation analysis. The latter model gives similar results as the former but with a reduction in the analysis complexity. Next and by means of the non-saturation analysis, we proposed an approximate mathematical model for multi-hop ad hoc networks. Furthermore, we proposed an iterative mechanism to estimate the throughput in the presence of multiple flows. Finally, we used the multi-hop analysis to propose a QoS route selection algorithm. In this algorithm, we concentrate on the throughput as a QoS parameter. However, the proposed algorithm is valid to be used with other QoS parameters, such as packet delay, packet loss probability, and fairness. Analytical and simulation results show the deficiency of the current route selection algorithm in AODV and at the same time verifies the need for QoS route selection algorithms
Design and analysis of a beacon-less routing protocol for large volume content dissemination in vehicular ad hoc networks
Largevolumecontentdisseminationispursuedbythegrowingnumberofhighquality applications for Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks(VANETs), e.g., the live road surveillance service and the video-based overtaking assistant service. For the highly dynamical vehicular network topology, beacon-less routing protocols have been proven to be efficient in achieving a balance between the system performance and the control overhead. However, to the authors’ best knowledge, the routing design for large volume content has not been well considered in the previous work, which will introduce new challenges, e.g., the enhanced connectivity requirement for a radio link. In this paper, a link Lifetime-aware Beacon-less Routing Protocol (LBRP) is designed for large volume content delivery in VANETs. Each vehicle makes the forwarding decision based on the message header information and its current state, including the speed and position information. A semi-Markov process analytical model is proposed to evaluate the expected delay in constructing one routing path for LBRP. Simulations show that the proposed LBRP scheme outperforms the traditional dissemination protocols in providing a low end-to-end delay. On Leveraging Partial Paths in Partially-Connected Networks
Mobile wireless network research focuses on scenarios at the extremes of the
network connectivity continuum where the probability of all nodes being
connected is either close to unity, assuming connected paths between all nodes
(mobile ad hoc networks), or it is close to zero, assuming no multi-hop paths
exist at all (delay-tolerant networks). In this paper, we argue that a sizable
fraction of networks lies between these extremes and is characterized by the
existence of partial paths, i.e. multi-hop path segments that allow forwarding
data closer to the destination even when no end-to-end path is available. A
fundamental issue in such networks is dealing with disruptions of end-to-end
paths. Under a stochastic model, we compare the performance of the established
end-to-end retransmission (ignoring partial paths), against a forwarding
mechanism that leverages partial paths to forward data closer to the
destination even during disruption periods. Perhaps surprisingly, the
alternative mechanism is not necessarily superior. However, under a stochastic
monotonicity condition between current v.s. future path length, which we
demonstrate to hold in typical network models, we manage to prove superiority
of the alternative mechanism in stochastic dominance terms. We believe that
this study could serve as a foundation to design more efficient data transfer
protocols for partially-connected networks, which could potentially help
reducing the gap between applications that can be supported over disconnected

Performance Modelling and Optimisation of Multi-hop Networks
A major challenge in the design of large-scale networks is to predict and optimise the
total time and energy consumption required to deliver a packet from a source node to a
destination node. Examples of such complex networks include wireless ad hoc and sensor
networks which need to deal with the effects of node mobility, routing inaccuracies, higher
packet loss rates, limited or time-varying effective bandwidth, energy constraints, and the
computational limitations of the nodes. They also include more reliable communication
environments, such as wired networks, that are susceptible to random failures, security
threats and malicious behaviours which compromise their quality of service (QoS) guarantees.
In such networks, packets traverse a number of hops that cannot be determined
in advance and encounter non-homogeneous network conditions that have been largely
ignored in the literature. This thesis examines analytical properties of packet travel in
large networks and investigates the implications of some packet coding techniques on both
QoS and resource utilisation.
Specifically, we use a mixed jump and diffusion model to represent packet traversal
through large networks. The model accounts for network non-homogeneity regarding
routing and the loss rate that a packet experiences as it passes successive segments of a
source to destination route. A mixed analytical-numerical method is developed to compute
the average packet travel time and the energy it consumes. The model is able to capture
the effects of increased loss rate in areas remote from the source and destination, variable
rate of advancement towards destination over the route, as well as of defending against
malicious packets within a certain distance from the destination. We then consider sending
multiple coded packets that follow independent paths to the destination node so as to
mitigate the effects of losses and routing inaccuracies. We study a homogeneous medium
and obtain the time-dependent properties of the packet’s travel process, allowing us to
compare the merits and limitations of coding, both in terms of delivery times and energy
efficiency. Finally, we propose models that can assist in the analysis and optimisation
of the performance of inter-flow network coding (NC). We analyse two queueing models
for a router that carries out NC, in addition to its standard packet routing function. The
approach is extended to the study of multiple hops, which leads to an optimisation problem
that characterises the optimal time that packets should be held back in a router, waiting
for coding opportunities to arise, so that the total packet end-to-end delay is minimised
Analyzing Linear Communication Networks using the Ribosome Flow Model
The Ribosome Flow Model (RFM) describes the unidirectional movement of
interacting particles along a one-dimensional chain of sites. As a site becomes
fuller, the effective entry rate into this site decreases. The RFM has been
used to model and analyze mRNA translation, a biological process in which
ribosomes (the particles) move along the mRNA molecule (the chain), and decode
the genetic information into proteins.
Here we propose the RFM as an analytical framework for modeling and analyzing
linear communication networks. In this context, the moving particles are
data-packets, the chain of sites is a one dimensional set of ordered buffers,
and the decreasing entry rate to a fuller buffer represents a kind of
decentralized backpressure flow control. For an RFM with homogeneous link
capacities, we provide closed-form expressions for important network metrics
including the throughput and end-to-end delay. We use these results to analyze
the hop length and the transmission probability (in a contention access mode)
that minimize the end-to-end delay in a multihop linear network, and provide
closed-form expressions for the optimal parameter values
