    A Comprehensive Study of the Enhanced Distributed Control Access (EDCA) Function

    This technical report presents a comprehensive study of the Enhanced Distributed Control Access (EDCA) function defined in IEEE 802.11e. All the three factors are considered. They are: contention window size (CW), arbitration inter-frame space (AIFS), and transmission opportunity limit (TXOP). We first propose a discrete Markov chain model to describe the channel activities governed by EDCA. Then we evaluate the individual as well as joint effects of each factor on the throughput and QoS performance. We obtain several insightful observations showing that judiciously using the EDCA service differentiation mechanism is important to achieve maximum bandwidth utilization and user-specified QoS performance. Guided by our theoretical study, we devise a general QoS framework that provides QoS in an optimal way. The means of realizing the framework in a specific network is yet to be studied

    A Novel Method of Serving Multimedia and Background Traffic in Wireless LANs.

    Wireless local area networks (LANs) require the efficient integration of multimedia and traditional data traffic. This paper proposes the priority-oriented adaptive polling (POAP) protocol that could be used in place of the enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) part of the IEEE 802.11e access scheme. EDCA seems capable of differentiating traffic; however, it exhibits great overhead that limits the available bandwidth and degrades performance. POAP is collision free, prioritizes the different kinds of traffic, and is able to provide quality of service (QoS) for all types of multimedia network applications while efficiently supporting background data traffic. POAP, compared to EDCA, provides higher channel utilization, distributes resources to the stations adapting to their real needs, and generally exhibits superior performance

    Optimal Configuration of 802.1e EDCA for Real-Time and Data Traffic

    The enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) mechanism of the IEEE 802.11e standard provides quality-of-service (QoS) support through service differentiation by using different medium-access-control (MAC) parameters for different stations. The configuration of these parameters, however, is still an open research challenge, as the standard provides only a set of fixed recommended values that do not take into account the current wireless local area network (WLAN) conditions and, therefore, lead to suboptimal performance. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for EDCA that, given the throughput and delay requirements of the stations that are present in the WLAN, computes the optimal configuration of the EDCA parameters. We first present a throughput and delay analysis that provides the mathematical foundation upon which our algorithm is based. This analysis is validated through simulations of different traffic sources (both data and real time) and EDCA configurations. We then propose a mechanism to derive the optimal configuration of the EDCA parameters, given a set of performance criteria for throughput and delay. We assess the effectiveness of the configuration provided by our algorithm by comparing it against 1) the recommended values by the standard, 2) the results from an exhaustive search over the parameter space, and 3) previous configuration proposals, which are both standard and nonstandard compliant.     AP-STA association control for throughput maximization in virtualized WiFi networks

    To manage and enable service customization among multiple internet service providers (ISPs) sharing the common physical infrastructure and network capacity in virtualized Wi-Fi networks, this paper models and optimizes access point-station (STA) association via airtime usage control. More specifically, an optimization problem is formulated on the STAs’ transmission probabilities to maximize the overall network throughput, while providing airtime usage guarantees for the ISPs. As the proposed optimization problem is inherently non-convex, an algorithm to reach the optimal solution is developed by applying monomial approximation and geometric programming iteratively. Based on the proposed 3-D Markov-chain model of the enhanced distributed channel access protocol, the detailed implementation of the optimal transmission probability of each STA is also discussed by manipulating medium access control parameters. The performance of the developed association and airtime control scheme is evaluated through numerical results. For both homogeneous and non-homogeneous STA distributions, numerical results reveal performance gains of the proposed algorithm in improving the throughput and keeping airtime usage guarantees

    Scheduling for next generation WLANs: filling the gap between offered and observed data rates

    In wireless networks, opportunistic scheduling is used to increase system throughput by exploiting multi-user diversity. Although recent advances have increased physical layer data rates supported in wireless local area networks (WLANs), actual throughput realized are significantly lower due to overhead. Accordingly, the frame aggregation concept is used in next generation WLANs to improve efficiency. However, with frame aggregation, traditional opportunistic schemes are no longer optimal. In this paper, we propose schedulers that take queue and channel conditions into account jointly, to maximize throughput observed at the users for next generation WLANs. We also extend this work to design two schedulers that perform block scheduling for maximizing network throughput over multiple transmission sequences. For these schedulers, which make decisions over long time durations, we model the system using queueing theory and determine users' temporal access proportions according to this model. Through detailed simulations, we show that all our proposed algorithms offer significant throughput improvement, better fairness, and much lower delay compared with traditional opportunistic schedulers, facilitating the practical use of the evolving standard for next generation wireless networks

    Efficient real-time video delivery in vehicular networks

    Tesis por compendio[EN] Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) are a special type of networks where the nodes involved in the communication are vehicles. VANETs are created when several vehicles connect among themselves without the use of any infrastructure. In certain situations the absence of infrastructure is an advantage, but it also creates several challenges that should be overcome. One of the main problems related with the absence of infrastructure is the lack of a coordinator that can ensure a certain level of quality in order to enable the correct transmission of video and audio. Video transmission can be extremely useful in this type of networks as it can be used for videoconferencing of by traffic authorities to monitor the scene of an accident. In this thesis we focused on real time video transmission, providing solutions for both unicast and multicast environments. Specifically, we built a real-world testbed scenario and made a comparison with simulation results to validate the behavior of the simulation models. Using that testbed we implemented and improved DACME, an admission control module able to provide Quality of Service (QoS) to unicast video transmissions. DACME proved to be a valid solution to obtain a certain level of QoS in multi-hop environments. Concerning multicast video transmission, we developed and simulated several flooding schemes, focusing specifically on VANET environments. In this scope, the main contribution of this thesis is the Automatic Copies Distance Based (ACDB) flooding scheme. Thanks to the use of the perceived vehicular density, ACDB is a zeroconf scheme able to achieve good video quality in both urban and highway environments, being specially effective in highway environments.[ES] Las redes vehiculares ad-hoc (VANET) son un tipo especial de redes en las que los nodos que participan de la comunicación son vehículos. Las VANETs se crean cuando diversos vehículos se conectan entre ellos sin el uso de ninguna infraestructura. En determinadas situaciones, la ausencia de infraestructura es una ventaja, pero también crea una gran cantidad de desafíos que se deben superar. Uno de los principales problemas relacionados con la ausencia de infraestructura, es la ausencia de un coordinador que pueda asegurar un determinado nivel de calidad, para poder asegurar la correcta transmisión de audio y vídeo. La transmisión de vídeo puede ser de extrema utilidad en este tipo de redes ya que puede ser empleada para videoconferencias o por las autoridades de tráfico para monitorizar el estado de un accidente. En esta tesis nos centramos en la transmisión de vídeo en tiempo real, proveyendo soluciones tanto para entornos unicast como multicast. En particular construimos un banco de pruebas real y comparamos los resultados obtenidos con resultados obtenidos en un entorno simulado para comprobar la fiabilidad de estos modelos. Usando el mismo banco de pruebas, implementamos y mejoramos DACME, un módulo de control de admisión capaz de proveer de calidad de servicio a transmisiones de vídeo unicast. DACME probó ser una solución válida para obtener ciertos niveles de calidad de servicio en entornos multisalto. En lo referente a la transmisión de vídeo multicast, desarrollamos y simulamos diversos esquemas de difusión diseñados específicamente para entornos VANET. En este campo, la principal contribución de esta tesis es el esquema de difusión "Automatic Copies Distance Based" (ACDB). Gracias al uso de la densidad vehicular percibida, ACDB es un esquema, que sin necesidad de configuración, permite alcanzar una buena calidad de vídeo tanto en entornos urbanos como en autopistas, siendo especialmente efectivo en este último entorno.[CA] Les xarxes vehiculars ad-hoc (VANET) son un tipus de xarxes especials a les que els diferents nodes que formen part d'una comunicació son vehicles. Les VANETs es formen quan diversos vehicles es connecten sense fer ús de cap infraestructura. A certes situacions l'absència d'una infraestructura suposa un avantatge, encara que també genera una gran quantitat de desafiaments que s'han de superar. U dels principals problemes relacionats amb l'absència d'infraestructura, és la manca d'un coordinador que puga garantir una correcta transmissió tant de video com d'àudio. La transmissió de video pot ser d'extrema utilitat a aquest tipus de xarxes, ja que es por emprar tant per a videoconferències com per part de les autoritats de trànsit per monitoritzar l'estat d'un accident. A aquesta tesi ens centrem en transmissió de video en temps real, proporcionant solucions tant a entorns unicast como a entorns multicast. Particularment, vam construir un banc de proves i obtinguérem resultats que comparàrem amb resultats obtinguts mitjançant simulació. D'aquesta manera validarem la fiabilitat dels resultats simulats. Fent ús del mateix banc de proves, vàrem implementar i millorar DACME, un mòdul de control d'admissió, capaç de proveir de qualitat de servici a transmissions de video unicast. DACME va provar ser una bona solució per obtindré un bon nivell de qualitat de servici en entorns de xarxes ad-hoc amb diversos salts. Si ens centrem a la transmissió de video multicast, vàrem implementar i simular diferents esquemes de difusió, específicament dissenyats per al seu ús a entorns VANET. La principal contribució d'aquesta tesi es l'esquema de difusió ACDB (Automatic Copies Distance Based). Fent ús de la densitat vehicular, ACDB es capaç d'obtindre una bona qualitat de video tant a ciutats com a vies interurbanes, sent a especialment efectiu a aquestes últimes.     Modeling and performance analysis of an alternative to IEEE 802.11e Hybrid Control Function

    Modern wireless networks are offering a wide range of applications that require the efficient integration of multimedia and traditional data traffic along with QoS provision. The IEEE 802.11e workgroup has standardized a new QoS enhanced access scheme for wireless LANs, namely Hybrid Control Function (HCF). HCF consists of the Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) and the Hybrid Control Channel Access (HCCA) protocols which manage to ensure QoS support. However, they exhibit specific weaknesses that limit network performance. This work analyzes an alternative protocol, called Priority Oriented Adaptive Polling (POAP). POAP is an integrated channel access mechanism, is collision free, it employs priorities to differentiate traffic in a proportional way, it provides fairness, and generally supports QoS for all types of multimedia applications, while efficiently serving background data traffic. POAP is compared to HCF in order to examine the wireless network performance when serving integrated traffic

    Experimental evaluation of 802.11e EDCA for enhanced voice over WLAN performance

    The 802.11e MAC protocol extends the 802.11 CSMA/CA contention mechanism by allowing the adjustment of MAC parameters that were previously fixed. While the 802.11e protocol has been extensively studied, this work is almost entirely confined to analytical and simulation studies. In this paper we demonstrate a technique for measuring one-way delay in an 802.11e hardware testbed and thereby study delay in the context of protecting a voice call competing against data traffic. We demonstrate that with the standard 802.11b MAC settings greedy data traffic is able to seize bandwidth from a low-rate voice call. Only 5 competing data stations are needed in order to induce a voice call loss rate exceeding 10%, which in practice would lead to an unacceptable level of voice quality and dropping of the call. We present experimental measurements which demonstrate that the use of 802.11e to provide a practical solution that can successfully deliver quality of service to voice traffic in a mixed voice/data environment. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of accurate one way delay measurements being used to show the priorisation of voice in an 802.11e hardware test-bed
