This article provides information on the evaluation of communication education programs at the graduate level in the U.S. American society has become virtually obsessed with evaluation and analysis of its educational institutions and programs. Federal investigations have spotlighted a near crisis state in elementary and secondary education. Scholars and investigators within the communication discipline have devoted much effort to the appraisal of instructional programs, particularly at the graduate level. Specific graduate courses, such as argumentation theory have been examined. Specific programs of study, including mass communication have garnered attention. More generally, masters-level programs in speech communication have been evaluated. The Speech Communication Association graduate directory helps to illuminate several important features of study in the communication discipline. The directory contains individual listings from hundreds of masters and doctoral level communication programs throughout the nation. The production of summary data and some degree of speculation regarding the data found in the 1994 graduate directory would be beneficial in a number of ways. Such information would help facilitate decision-making on the part of both potential graduate students and the programs that must attempt to attract them by providing an overall view of graduate study in the communication discipline

Intercultural Communication, Dialogue and Conflict Studies: Some Remarks on the object of investigation, the finality of research and the methods of analysis of anthropocentric culturology. The paper presents the main issues of anthropocentric culturology as an autonomous scientific discipline which differentiate itself in the context of the Anthropocentric Theory of Languages and Cultures. It presents in a synthetic way the object of investigation, the finalities and the research methods of this discipline on the base of selected topics: Intercultural Communication, Dialogue and Conflict Studies, Communication face-to -face

Naming the Pain in Requirements Engineering: A Design for a Global Family of Surveys and First Results from Germany

For many years, we have observed industry struggling in defining a high quality requirements engineering (RE) and researchers trying to understand industrial expectations and problems. Although we are investigating the discipline with a plethora of empirical studies, they still do not allow for empirical generalisations. To lay an empirical and externally valid foundation about the state of the practice in RE, we aim at a series of open and reproducible surveys that allow us to steer future research in a problem-driven manner. We designed a globally distributed family of surveys in joint collaborations with different researchers and completed the first run in Germany. The instrument is based on a theory in the form of a set of hypotheses inferred from our experiences and available studies. We test each hypothesis in our theory and identify further candidates to extend the theory by correlation and Grounded Theory analysis. In this article, we report on the design of the family of surveys, its underlying theory, and the full results obtained from Germany with participants from 58 companies. The results reveal, for example, a tendency to improve RE via internally defined qualitative methods rather than relying on normative approaches like CMMI. We also discovered various RE problems that are statistically significant in practice. For instance, we could corroborate communication flaws or moving targets as problems in practice. Our results are not yet fully representative but already give first insights into current practices and problems in RE, and they allow us to draw lessons learnt for future replications. Our results obtained from this first run in Germany make us confident that the survey design and instrument are well-suited to be replicated and, thereby, to create a generalisable empirical basis of RE in practice

Discipline was related to one's awareness and willingness to obey all company regulations and social norms that apply. Issues related to discipline became a phenomenon which was often encountered and carried out by many employees. Low discipline behavior had negative implications for the organization. Therefore, empirical studies related to factors that explained disciplinary behavior became a topic of study that was still relevant to be studied. Mapping of the explanatory factors for disciplinary behavior was carried out through the study of previous research results which then purses four explanatory variables, namely leadership style, organizational communication climate, and work motivation level. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of leadership style, organizational communication climate, the level of work motivation, and level of work discipline. This research was conducted with an explanatory quantitative approach using a questionnaire on 61 employees of the Higher Education Service Institute (LLDIKTI) Region VI of Central Java. The Social Cognitive Theory was used as the grand theory in this study. Data analysis was performed using the Partial Least Square (PLS) approach. The results of statistical tests that had been carried out in this study show that leadership style had a significant positive effect on organizational communication climate and work motivation level, organizational communication climate had a significant positive effect on work motivation level. Whereas testing the level of work motivation and leadership style on the level of employee discipline was not a significant positive effect

The Social Life of Information Systems Research: A Response to Benbasat and Zmud\u27s Call for Returning to the IT Artifact

Benbasat and Zmud (2003) argue that there is an identity crisis within the Information Systems discipline and, as a solution to the crisis, propose a focus on ¡°the IT artifact and its immediate nomological net¡± (p. 186). Using Aldrich¡¯s (1999) articulation of organizational evolution, they note the need for greater cognitive legitimacy as a driving force for sustainability of the discipline. They recommend that researchers and journal editors set the boundaries of the field more firmly so that greater attention is given to the IT artifact rather than to structure, context, or other phenomena that lie distant from the artifact. An alternative analysis of the IS field can be made through the lens of community of practice. Here the indicators suggest more positive progress toward legitimacy of the IS field and a path toward improvement via boundary enhancement rather than constraint. Other recommendations for improving the sustainability of the discipline include greater attention to research questions of current interest, even if they are peripheral to the artifact, greater communication of theory and empirical research results, and continued attempts to build and sustain active membership

Communication is an essential tool for successful family functioning. Communication in the family is very important as it allows members to express their needs, wants, concerns and loves. Effective communication creates an atmosphere that allows family members to express their differences as well as love and admiration for one another. Love is the basis of happy and successful family. Each culture has their own way of expressing their love. Thus, the present research aimed to understand on how the conventional Malay men communicate their love in the family. A grounded theory approach in qualitative research design was used to answer the research question. The data collection involved semi-structured interview, observation and document analysis. As a result, seven main themes emerged. The themes are academic supervisor, personal advisor, financial provider, educator, positive role model, discipline maintainer, and spiritual leader. In summary, the conventional Malay Men communicate their love via a high commitment to the family especially to their children. As a result, the children appreciate their father’s love and make it as a reason to be successful in life. Good communication helps family members come to an understanding, which is the basis for all healthy familial relationships. Communication is a key way to show our family members how to love each other

Communication studies, disciplination and the ontological stakes of interdisciplinarity: a critical review

Building on an in-depth analysis of the core literature grappling with the philosophical problematization of communication, this article examines the oft-asserted interdisciplinary nature of communication studies by assessing some of its underlying presuppositions at the ontological and epistemological levels. The article evaluates the coherence of our fragmented discipline through the articulation of the categories of the One and the Multiple in ontological and epistemological directions. In doing so, the recurrent conception of communication studies as an interdiscipline is criticized while recognizing the importance of undertaking interdisciplinary research within the field. Are especially considered the historical roots of interdisciplinary advocacies, namely the institutional demands for interdisciplinarity that have often resulted in conceptions of communication studies by communication scholars themselves as a crossroads or a service discipline. Building from Ernst Cassirer’s developments regarding the “theory of the concept’’, the author contends in the final section of the paper that the solution to the lack of coherence of the field lies in the necessity for communication studies to discipline themselves in order for the research undertaken within the field to acquire a common framework of intelligibility
