Synthesizing Unequally Spaced Pattern-Reconfigurable Linear Arrays with Minimum Interspacing Control

© 2013 IEEE. Previously, the alternating convex optimization (ACO) was used to reduce the number of elements in the single-pattern linear array. This work extends the ACO method to synthesize the unequally spaced sparse linear arrays with reconfigurable multiple patterns. In this extended ACO, the minimum interspacing constraint can be easily incorporated in the sparse array synthesis by performing a set of constrained alternating convex optimizations. Three examples for synthesizing sparse linear array with different multiple-pattern requirements are conducted to validate the effectiveness, robustness, and advantages of the proposed method. The synthesis results show that the proposed method can effectively reduce the number of elements in the reconfigurable multiple-pattern linear arrays with good control of the sidelobe levels and minimum interspacing. The comparisons with other methods are also given in the examples

1-D broadside-radiating leaky-wave antenna based on a numerically synthesized impedance surface

A newly-developed deterministic numerical technique for the automated design of metasurface antennas is applied here for the first time to the design of a 1-D printed Leaky-Wave Antenna (LWA) for broadside radiation. The surface impedance synthesis process does not require any a priori knowledge on the impedance pattern, and starts from a mask constraint on the desired far-field and practical bounds on the unit cell impedance values. The designed reactance surface for broadside radiation exhibits a non conventional patterning; this highlights the merit of using an automated design process for a design well known to be challenging for analytical methods. The antenna is physically implemented with an array of metal strips with varying gap widths and simulation results show very good agreement with the predicted performance

Beam scanning by liquid-crystal biasing in a modified SIW structure

A fixed-frequency beam-scanning 1D antenna based on Liquid Crystals (LCs) is designed for application in 2D scanning with lateral alignment. The 2D array environment imposes full decoupling of adjacent 1D antennas, which often conflicts with the LC requirement of DC biasing: the proposed design accommodates both. The LC medium is placed inside a Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) modified to work as a Groove Gap Waveguide, with radiating slots etched on the upper broad wall, that radiates as a Leaky-Wave Antenna (LWA). This allows effective application of the DC bias voltage needed for tuning the LCs. At the same time, the RF field remains laterally confined, enabling the possibility to lay several antennas in parallel and achieve 2D beam scanning. The design is validated by simulation employing the actual properties of a commercial LC medium

Improved Beam-Scannable Ultra-Wideband Sparse Antenna Arrays by Iterative Convex Optimization Based on Raised Power Series Representation

© 1963-2012 IEEE. A novel method is presented to design beam-scannable ultra-wideband (UWB) sparse arrays. A concept of design frequency is introduced which transforms the beam-scannable UWB array design to the problem of synthesizing a broadside-beam array at single frequency. The raised power series (RPS) representation with appropriate parameter selection is adopted to generate initial element positions, and then an iterative convex optimization is applied to successively optimize the element positions for further sidelobe level (SLL) reduction. Multiple constraints for controlling the first-order Taylor expansion accuracy, the minimum element spacing, and the array aperture are incorporated in the iterative convex optimization to obtain stable and practical synthesis results. Several examples for synthesizing UWB arrays with different frequency bands, beam scanning, ranges and element counts are conducted to validate the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed method. It is shown that the proposed method achieves much lower SLLs than those by the original RPS method for all test cases, and it also significantly outperforms some conventional stochastic optimization methods for large UWB array cases

Current Based Automated Design of Realizable Metasurface Antennas With Arbitrary Pattern Constraints

    Get PDF
We present a 3-D method to numerically design a realizable metasurface, which transforms a given incident field into a radiated field that satisfies mask-type (inequality) constraints. The method is based on an integral equation formulation, with local impedance boundary condition (IBC) approximation. The procedure yields the spatial distribution of the impedance, yet the process involves the synthesis of the equivalent current only. This current is constrained to correspond to a realizable surface impedance, i.e., passive, lossless, and with reactance values bounded by practical realizability limits. The current-based design avoids any solution to the forward problem, and the impedance is obtained from the synthesized current only at the end of the process. The procedure is gradient-based, with the gradient expressed in closed form. This allows handling large metasurfaces, with full spatial variability of the impedance in two dimensions. The method requires no a priori information, and all relevant operations in the iterative process can be evaluated with O(N log N) complexity. Application examples concentrate on the case of on-surface excitation and far-field (FF) pattern specifications; they show designs of circular and rectangular metasurface antennas of 20 wavelengths in size, with pencil- and shaped-beam patterns, and for both circular and linear polarizations
