Parametric high resolution techniques for radio astronomical imaging

The increased sensitivity of future radio telescopes will result in requirements for higher dynamic range within the image as well as better resolution and immunity to interference. In this paper we propose a new matrix formulation of the imaging equation in the cases of non co-planar arrays and polarimetric measurements. Then we improve our parametric imaging techniques in terms of resolution and estimation accuracy. This is done by enhancing both the MVDR parametric imaging, introducing alternative dirty images and by introducing better power estimates based on least squares, with positive semi-definite constraints. We also discuss the use of robust Capon beamforming and semi-definite programming for solving the self-calibration problem. Additionally we provide statistical analysis of the bias of the MVDR beamformer for the case of moving array, which serves as a first step in analyzing iterative approaches such as CLEAN and the techniques proposed in this paper. Finally we demonstrate a full deconvolution process based on the parametric imaging techniques and show its improved resolution and sensitivity compared to the CLEAN method.Comment: To appear in IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing, Special issue on Signal Processing for Astronomy and space research. 30 page

High resolution image reconstruction with constrained, total-variation minimization

This work is concerned with applying iterative image reconstruction, based on constrained total-variation minimization, to low-intensity X-ray CT systems that have a high sampling rate. Such systems pose a challenge for iterative image reconstruction, because a very fine image grid is needed to realize the resolution inherent in such scanners. These image arrays lead to under-determined imaging models whose inversion is unstable and can result in undesirable artifacts and noise patterns. There are many possibilities to stabilize the imaging model, and this work proposes a method which may have an advantage in terms of algorithm efficiency. The proposed method introduces additional constraints in the optimization problem; these constraints set to zero high spatial frequency components which are beyond the sensing capability of the detector. The method is demonstrated with an actual CT data set and compared with another method based on projection up-sampling.Comment: This manuscript appears in the proceedings of the 2010 IEEE medical imaging conferenc

Shaped Pupil Lyot Coronagraphs: High-Contrast Solutions for Restricted Focal Planes

Coronagraphs of the apodized pupil and shaped pupil varieties use the Fraunhofer diffraction properties of amplitude masks to create regions of high contrast in the vicinity of a target star. Here we present a hybrid coronagraph architecture in which a binary, hard-edged shaped pupil mask replaces the gray, smooth apodizer of the apodized pupil Lyot coronagraph (APLC). For any contrast and bandwidth goal in this configuration, as long as the prescribed region of contrast is restricted to a finite area in the image, a shaped pupil is the apodizer with the highest transmission. We relate the starlight cancellation mechanism to that of the conventional APLC. We introduce a new class of solutions in which the amplitude profile of the Lyot stop, instead of being fixed as a padded replica of the telescope aperture, is jointly optimized with the apodizer. Finally, we describe shaped pupil Lyot coronagraph (SPLC) designs for the baseline architecture of the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope-Astrophysics Focused Telescope Assets (WFIRST-AFTA) coronagraph. These SPLCs help to enable two scientific objectives of the WFIRST-AFTA mission: (1) broadband spectroscopy to characterize exoplanet atmospheres in reflected starlight and (2) debris disk imaging.Comment: 41 pages, 15 figures; published in the JATIS special section on WFIRST-AFTA coronagraph

    A constrained, total-variation minimization algorithm for low-intensity X-ray CT

Purpose: We develop an iterative image-reconstruction algorithm for application to low-intensity computed tomography (CT) projection data, which is based on constrained, total-variation (TV) minimization. The algorithm design focuses on recovering structure on length scales comparable to a detector-bin width. Method: Recovering the resolution on the scale of a detector bin, requires that pixel size be much smaller than the bin width. The resulting image array contains many more pixels than data, and this undersampling is overcome with a combination of Fourier upsampling of each projection and the use of constrained, TV-minimization, as suggested by compressive sensing. The presented pseudo-code for solving constrained, TV-minimization is designed to yield an accurate solution to this optimization problem within 100 iterations. Results: The proposed image-reconstruction algorithm is applied to a low-intensity scan of a rabbit with a thin wire, to test resolution. The proposed algorithm is compared with filtered back-projection (FBP). Conclusion: The algorithm may have some advantage over FBP in that the resulting noise-level is lowered at equivalent contrast levels of the wire.Comment: This article has been submitted to "Medical Physics" on 9/13/201
