Changing online shopping behaviors have resulted in the emergence of different product and services that aim high customer satisfaction. In this thesis, we develop an alternative approach to solve problem of a logistics company, which operates solely for e-commerce transactions, using an Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) heuristic. To understand the nature of the distribution system and for the development of the solution procedure, we create, preprocess and analyze a dataset constructed from company’s database that is used for daily operations. The proposed solution provides a prioritization mechanism for the deliveries based on certain specifications related to deliveries. To evaluate the performance of the proposed ALNS, we perform computational experiments using scenarios with real-life instances extracted from the dataset. Our results show that, the proposed ALNS can produce solutions with high quality regarding customer satisfactio

Urban Logistics in Amsterdam: A Modal Shift from Roadways to Waterway

The efficiency of urban logistics is vital for economic prosperity and quality of life in cities. However, rapid urbanization poses significant challenges, such as congestion, emissions, and strained infrastructure. This paper addresses these challenges by proposing an optimal urban logistic network that integrates urban waterways and last-mile delivery in Amsterdam. The study highlights the untapped potential of inland waterways in addressing logistical challenges in the city center. The problem is formulated as a two-echelon location routing problem with time windows, and a hybrid solution approach is developed to solve it effectively. The proposed algorithm consistently outperforms existing approaches, demonstrating its effectiveness in solving existing benchmarks and newly developed instances. Through a comprehensive case study, the advantages of implementing a waterway-based distribution chain are assessed, revealing substantial cost savings (approximately 28%) and reductions in vehicle weight (about 43%) and travel distances (roughly 80%) within the city center. The incorporation of electric vehicles further contributes to environmental sustainability. Sensitivity analysis underscores the importance of managing transshipment location establishment costs as a key strategy for cost efficiencies and reducing reliance on delivery vehicles and road traffic congestion. This study provides valuable insights and practical guidance for managers seeking to enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and promote sustainable transportation practices. Further analysis is warranted to fully evaluate the feasibility and potential benefits, considering infrastructural limitations and canal characteristics

A study on the heterogeneous fleet of alternative fuel vehicles: Reducing CO2 emissions by means of biodiesel fuel

In the context of home healthcare services, patients may need to be visited multiple times by different healthcare specialists who may use a fleet of heterogeneous vehicles. In addition, some of these visits may need to be synchronized with each other for performing a treatment at the same time. We call this problem the Heterogeneous Fleet Vehicle Routing Problem with Synchronized visits (HF-VRPS). It consists of planning a set of routes for a set of light duty vehicles running on alternative fuels. We propose three population-based hybrid Artificial Bee Colony metaheuristic algorithms for the HF-VRPS. These algorithms are tested on newly generated instances and on a set of homogeneous VRPS instances from the literature. Besides producing quality solutions, our experimental results illustrate the trade-offs between important factors, such as CO2 emissions and driver wage. The computational results also demonstrate the advantages of adopting a heterogeneous fleet rather than a homogeneous one for the use in home healthcare services

Managing Advanced Synchronization Aspects in Logistics Systems

In this thesis, we model various complex logistics problems and develop appropriate techniques to solve them. We improve industrial practices by introducing synchronized solutions to problems that were previously solved independently. The first part of this thesis focuses on cross-docks. We simultaneously optimize supplier orders and cross-docking operations to either reduce the storage space required or evenly distribute workload over the week. The second part of this thesis is devoted to transport problems in which two types of vehicles are synchronized, one of which can be transported by the other. The areas of application range from home services to parcel delivery to customers. After analyzing the complexity associated with these synchronized solutions (i.e., largescale problems for which the decisions depend on each other), we design algorithms based on the "destroy-and-repair" principle to find efficient solutions. We also introduce mathematical programs for all the considered problems. The problems under study arose directly from collaborations with various industrial partners. In this respect, our achieved solutions have been benchmarked with current industrial practice. Depending on the problem, we have been able to reduce the environmental impact generated by the industrial activities, the overall cost, or the social impact. The achieved gains compared to current industrial practice range from 10 to 70%, depending on the application. A spatial decomposition based math-heuristic approach to the asset protection problem

    Get PDF
This paper addresses the highly critical task of planning asset protection activities during uncontrollable wildfires known in the literature as the Asset Protection Problem (APP). In the APP each asset requires a protective service to be performed by a set of emergency response vehicles within a specific time period defined by the spread of fire. We propose a new spatial decomposition based math-heuristic approach for the solution of large-scale APPs. The heuristic exploits the property that time windows are geographically correlated as fire spreads across a landscape. Thus an appropriate division of the landscape allows the problem to be decomposed into smaller more tractable sub-problems. The main challenge then is to minimise the difference between the final locations of vehicles from one division to the optimal starting locations of the next division. The performance of the proposed approach is tested on a set of benchmark instances from the literature and compared to the most recent Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) algorithm developed for the APP. The results show that our proposed solution approach outperforms the ALNS algorithm on all instances with comparable computation time. We also see a trend with the margin of out-performance becoming more significant as the problems become larger

Timely salting of roads before the snowfall is an important preventive activity for improving traffic safety and avoiding traffic congestions. We study the problem of routing and scheduling of salt trucks on a city road network. The problem is motivated by the operational problem that the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality face in case of a heavy snowfall, and thereby should be solved in a periodic manner. In this problem, the vehicle fleet consists of heterogeneous vehicles that differ in salt capacity and there are multiple salt replenishment points. At the beginning of the current planning horizon, given a set of salt needing roads with different urgency levels, the vehicles start from different points of the network (i.e., their final locations at the end of the former planning horizon) and should cover all salt needing roads with the objective of minimizing the total weighted completion time of salting operation of each service needing arc. Each service needing arc should be serviced by exactly one vehicle, however, can be traversed for deadheading by a vehicle as part of its route.Vehicles visit replenishment points when they run out of salt. We first develop a Mixed-Integer Programming model for the problem. Since the performance of the model degrades rapidly as the problem size increases, we propose a simulated annealing metaheuristic, which obtains an initial solution by a constructive heuristic in the first phase, and then improves the solution in the next phase. The efficiency of our solution approach is evaluated on randomly generated instances reflecting real life road networks

Enhanced Iterated local search for the technician routing and scheduling problem

Most public facilities in the European countries, including France, Germany, and the UK, were built during the reconstruction projects between 1950 and 1980. Owing to the deteriorating state of such vital infrastructure has become relatively expensive in the recent decades. A significant part of the maintenance operation costs is spent on the technical staff. Therefore, the optimal use of the available workforce is essential to optimize the operation costs. This includes planning technical interventions, workload balancing, productivity improvement, etc. In this paper, we focus on the routing of technicians and scheduling of their tasks. We address for this purpose a variant of the workforce scheduling problem called the technician routing and scheduling problem (TRSP). This problem has applications in different fields, such as transportation infrastructure (rail and road networks), telecommunications, and sewage facilities. To solve the TRSP, we propose an enhanced iterated local search (eILS) approach. The enhancement of the ILS firstly includes an intensification procedure that incorporates a set of local search operators and removal-repair heuristics crafted for the TRSP. Next, four different mechanisms are used in the perturbation phase. Finally, an elite set of solutions is used to extensively explore the neighborhood of local optima as well as to enhance diversification during search space exploration. To measure the performance of the proposed method, experiments were conducted based on benchmark instances from the literature, and the results obtained were compared with those of an existing method. Our method achieved very good results, since it reached the best overall gap, which is three times lower than that of the literature. Furthermore, eILS improved the best-known solution for 3434 instances among a total of 5656 while maintaining reasonable computational times.Comment: Submitted manuscript to Computers and Operations Research journal. 34 pages, 7 figures, 6 table

Vehicle routing problems with drones equipped with multi-package payload compartments

The vehicle routing problem with drones (VRP-D) consists of designing combined truck-drone routes and schedules to serve a set of customers with specific requests and time constraints. In this paper, VRP-D is extended to include a fleet of drones equipped with multi-package payload compartments to serve more customers on a single trip. Moreover, a drone can return to a truck, different from the one from which it started, to swap its depleted battery and/or to pick up more packages. This problem, denoted as VRP-D equipped with multi-package payload compartments (VRP-D-MC), aims to maximize total profit. In this work, an adaptive multi-start simulated annealing (AMS-SA) metaheuristic algorithm is proposed to efficiently solve this problem. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the current state-of-the-art algorithms for VRP-D in terms of solution quality. Extensive analyses have been conducted to provide managerial insights. The analyses carried out show (i) the benefits of using drones equipped with different compartment configurations, (ii) the incremental total profit obtainable using a combined truck-drone fleet rather than a fleet of trucks, (iii) the benefit of swapping drone battery while picking up the items to deliver, and (iv) the impact of the packages load on the consumption energy of battery drone. It is also demonstrated that the different intensification and diversification mechanisms adopted improve the convergence of the traditional SA
