IoT trust and reputation: a survey and taxonomy
IoT is one of the fastest-growing technologies and it is estimated that more
than a billion devices would be utilized across the globe by the end of 2030.
To maximize the capability of these connected entities, trust and reputation
among IoT entities is essential. Several trust management models have been
proposed in the IoT environment; however, these schemes have not fully
addressed the IoT devices features, such as devices role, device type and its
dynamic behavior in a smart environment. As a result, traditional trust and
reputation models are insufficient to tackle these characteristics and
uncertainty risks while connecting nodes to the network. Whilst continuous
study has been carried out and various articles suggest promising solutions in
constrained environments, research on trust and reputation is still at its
infancy. In this paper, we carry out a comprehensive literature review on
state-of-the-art research on the trust and reputation of IoT devices and
systems. Specifically, we first propose a new structure, namely a new taxonomy,
to organize the trust and reputation models based on the ways trust is managed.
The proposed taxonomy comprises of traditional trust management-based systems
and artificial intelligence-based systems, and combine both the classes which
encourage the existing schemes to adapt these emerging concepts. This
collaboration between the conventional mathematical and the advanced ML models
result in design schemes that are more robust and efficient. Then we drill down
to compare and analyse the methods and applications of these systems based on
community-accepted performance metrics, e.g. scalability, delay,
cooperativeness and efficiency. Finally, built upon the findings of the
analysis, we identify and discuss open research issues and challenges, and

Trust management techniques for the internet of things: A survey
A vision of the future Internet is introduced in such a fashion that various computing devices are connected together to form a network called Internet of Things (IoT). This network will generate massive data that may be leveraged for entertainment, security, and most importantly user trust. Yet, trust is an imperative obstruction that may hinder the IoT growth and even delay the substantial squeeze of a number of applications. In this survey, an extensive analysis of trust management techniques along with their pros and cons is presented in a different context. In comparison with other surveys, the goal is to provide a systematic description of the most relevant trust management techniques to help researchers understand that how various systems fit together to bring preferred functionalities without examining different standards. Trust assessment in the context of unrepresentative information
Trust and reputation algorithms are social methods, complementary to security protocols, that guide agents in multi-agent systems (MAS) in identifying trustworthy partners to communicate with. Agents need to interact to complete tasks, which requires delegating to an agent who has the time, resources or information to achieve it. Existing trust and reputation assessment methods can be accurate when they are learning from representative information, however, representative information rarely exists for all agents at all times. Improving trust mechanisms can benefit many open and distributed multi-agent applications. For example, distributing subtasks to trustworthy agents in pervasive computing or choosing who to share safe and high quality files with in a peer-to-peer network.
Trust and reputation algorithms use the outcomes from past interaction experiences with agents to assess their behaviour. Stereotype models supplement trust and reputation methods when there is a lack of direct interaction experiences by inferring the target will behave the same as agents who are observably similar. These mechanisms can be effective in MAS where behaviours and agents do not change, or change in a simplistic way, for example, if agents changed their behaviour at the same rate. In real-world networks, agents experience fluctuations in their location, resources, knowledge, availability, time and priorities. Existing work does not account for the resulting dynamic dynamic populations and dynamic agent behaviours. Additionally, trust, reputation and stereotype models encourage repeat interactions with the same subset of agents which increase the uncertainty about the behaviour of the rest of the agent population. In the long term, having a biased view of the population hinders the discovery of new and better interaction partners. The diversity of agents and environments across MAS means that rigid approaches of maintaining and using data keep outdated information in some situations and not enough data in others. A logical improvement is for agents to manage information flexibly and adapt to their situation.
In this thesis we present the following contributions. We propose a method to improve partner selection by making agents aware of a lack of diversity in their own knowledge and how to then make alternative behavioural assessments. We present methods for detecting dynamic behaviour in groups of agents, and give agents the statistical tools to decide which data are relevant. We introduce a data-free stereotype method to be used when there are no representative data for a data-driven behaviour assessment. Finally, we consider how agents can summarise agent behaviours to learn and exploit in depth behavioural patterns.
The work presented in this thesis is evaluated in a synthetic environment designed to mimic characteristics of real-world networks and are comparable to evaluation environments from prominent trust and stereotype literature. The results show our work improves agentsâ average reward from interactions by selecting better partners. We show that the efficacy of our work is most noticeable in environments where agents have sparse data, because it improve agentsâ trust assessments under uncertainty
Implementing Multi Agent Systems (MAS)-based trust and reputation in smart IoT environments : A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Lincoln University
The Internet of Things (IoT) provides advanced services by interconnecting a huge number of heterogeneous smart things (virtual or physical devices) through existing interoperable information and communication technologies. As IoT devices become more intelligent, they will have the ability to communicate and cooperate with each other. In doing so, enormous amount of sensitive data will flow within the network such as a credit card information, medical data, factory details, pictures and videos. With sensitive data flowing through the network, privacy becomes one of most important issues facing IoT. Studies of data sensitivity and privacy indicate the importance of evaluating the trustworthiness of IoT participants to maximize the satisfaction and the performance of the IoT applications. It is also important to maintain successful collaboration between the devices deployed in the network and ensure all devices operate in a trustworthy manner. This research aims to determine: How to select the best service provider in an IoT environment based on the trustworthiness and the reputation of the service provider? To achieve this, we proposed an IoT agent-based decentralized trust and reputation model IoT-CADM (Comprehensive Agent-based Decision-making Model for IoT) to select the best service providers for a particular service based on multi-context quality of services. IoT-CADM as a novel trust and reputation model, is developed for the smart multi-agent IoT environment to gather information from entities and score them using a new trust and reputation scoring mechanism. IoT-CADM aims to ensure that the service consumers are serviced by the best service providers in the IoT environment which in turn maximizes the service consumersâ satisfaction, which lead the IoT entities to operate and make-decisions on behalf of its owner in a trustworthy manner. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model against some other well-known models like ReGreT, SIoT, and R-D-C, we implemented a scenario based on the SIPOC Supply Chain approach developed using an agent development framework called JADE. This research used the TOPSIS approach to compare and rank the performance of these models based on different parameters that have been chosen carefully for fair comparison. The TOPSIS result confirmed that the proposed IoT-CADM has the highest performance. In addition, the model can be tuned to its parameters weight to adapt to varying scenarios in honest and dishonest agentsâ environments

Infatti, noi crediamo che le reti complesse possano costituire un modello unico ed unificante per rappresentare e gestire dati altamente eterogenei. Modern Socio-Technical Perspectives on Privacy
This open access book provides researchers and professionals with a foundational understanding of online privacy as well as insight into the socio-technical privacy issues that are most pertinent to modern information systems, covering several modern topics (e.g., privacy in social media, IoT) and underexplored areas (e.g., privacy accessibility, privacy for vulnerable populations, cross-cultural privacy). The book is structured in four parts, which follow after an introduction to privacy on both a technical and social level: Privacy Theory and Methods covers a range of theoretical lenses through which one can view the concept of privacy. The chapters in this part relate to modern privacy phenomena, thus emphasizing its relevance to our digital, networked lives. Next, Domains covers a number of areas in which privacy concerns and implications are particularly salient, including among others social media, healthcare, smart cities, wearable IT, and trackers. The Audiences section then highlights audiences that have traditionally been ignored when creating privacy-preserving experiences: people from other (non-Western) cultures, people with accessibility needs, adolescents, and people who are underrepresented in terms of their race, class, gender or sexual identity, religion or some combination. Finally, the chapters in Moving Forward outline approaches to privacy that move beyond one-size-fits-all solutions, explore ethical considerations, and describe the regulatory landscape that governs privacy through laws and policies. Perhaps even more so than the other chapters in this book, these chapters are forward-looking by using current personalized, ethical and legal approaches as a starting point for re-conceptualizations of privacy to serve the modern technological landscape. The bookâs primary goal is to inform IT students, researchers, and professionals about both the fundamentals of online privacy and the issues that are most pertinent to modern information systems.
