    Analysis of the high frequency substrate noise effects on LC-VCOs

    La integració de transceptors per comunicacions de radiofreqüència en CMOS pot quedar seriosament limitada per la interacció entre els seus blocs, arribant a desaconsellar la utilització de un únic dau de silici. El soroll d’alta freqüència generat per certs blocs, com l’amplificador de potencia, pot viatjar pel substrat i amenaçar el correcte funcionament de l’oscil·lador local. Trobem tres raons importants que mostren aquest risc d’interacció entre blocs i que justifiquen la necessitat d’un estudi profund per minimitzar-lo. Les característiques del substrat fan que el soroll d’alta freqüència es propagui m’és fàcilment que el de baixa freqüència. Per altra banda, les estructures de protecció perden eficiència a mesura que la freqüència augmenta. Finalment, el soroll d’alta freqüència que arriba a l’oscil·lador degrada al seu correcte comportament. El propòsit d’aquesta tesis és analitzar en profunditat la interacció entre el soroll d’alta freqüència que es propaga pel substrat i l’oscil·lador amb l’objectiu de poder predir, mitjançant un model, l’efecte que aquest soroll pot tenir sobre el correcte funcionament de l’oscil·lador. Es volen proporcionar diverses guies i normes a seguir que permeti als dissenyadors augmentar la robustesa dels oscil·ladors al soroll d’alta freqüència que viatja pel substrat. La investigació de l’efecte del soroll de substrat en oscil·ladors s’ha iniciat des d’un punt de vista empíric, per una banda, analitzant la propagació de senyals a través del substrat i avaluant l’eficiència d’estructures per bloquejar aquesta propagació, i per altra, determinant l’efecte d’un to present en el substrat en un oscil·lador. Aquesta investigació ha mostrat que la injecció d’un to d’alta freqüència en el substrat es pot propagar fins arribar a l’oscil·lador i que, a causa del ’pulling’ de freqüència, pot modular en freqüència la sortida de l’oscil·lador. A partir dels resultats de l’anàlisi empíric s’ha aportat un model matemàtic que permet predir l’efecte del soroll en l’oscil·lador. Aquest model té el principal avantatge en el fet de que està basat en paràmetres físics de l’oscil·lador o del soroll, permetent determinar les mesures que un dissenyador pot prendre per augmentar la robustesa de l’oscil·lador així com les conseqüències que aquestes mesures tenen sobre el seu funcionament global (trade-offs). El model ha estat comparat tant amb simulacions com amb mesures reals demostrant ser molt precís a l’hora de predir l’efecte del soroll de substrat. La utilitat del model com a eina de disseny s’ha demostrat en dos estudis. Primerament, les conclusions del model han estat aplicades en el procés de disseny d’un oscil·lador d’ultra baix consum a 2.5GHz, aconseguint un oscil·lador robust al soroll de substrat d’alta freqüència i amb característiques totalment compatibles amb els principals estàndards de comunicació en aquesta banda. Finalment, el model s’ha utilitzat com a eina d’anàlisi per avaluar la causa de les diferències, en termes de robustesa a soroll de substrat, mesurades en dos oscil·ladors a 60GHz amb dues diferents estratègies d’apantallament de l’inductor del tanc de ressonant, flotant en un cas i connectat a terra en l’altre. El model ha mostrat que les diferències en robustesa són causades per la millora en el factor de qualitat i en l’amplitud d’oscil·lació i no per un augment en l’aïllament entre tanc i substrat. The high frequency noise generated by some of the blocks, like the power amplifier, can travel through the substrate, reaching the local oscillator and threatening its correct performance. Three important reasons can be stated that show the risk of the single die integration. Noise propagation is easier the higher the frequency. Moreover, the protection structures lose efficiency as the noise frequency increases. Finally, the high frequency noise that reaches the local oscillator degrades its performance. The purpose of this thesis is to deeply analyze the interaction between the high frequency substrate noise and the oscillator with the objective of being able to predict, thanks to a model, the effect that this noise may have over the correct behavior of the oscillator. We want to provide some guidelines to the designers to allow them to increase the robustness of the oscillator to high frequency substrate noise. The investigation of the effect of the high frequency substrate noise on oscillators has started from an empirical point of view, on one hand, analyzing the noise propagation through the substrate and evaluating the efficiency of some structures to block this propagation, and on the other hand, determining the effect on an oscillator of a high frequency noise tone present in the substrate. This investigation has shown that the injection of a high frequency tone in the substrate can reach the oscillator and, due to a frequency pulling effect, it can modulate in frequency the output of the oscillator. Based on the results obtained during the empirical analysis, a mathematical model to predict the effect of the substrate noise on the oscillator has been provided. The main advantage of this model is the fact that it is based on physical parameters of the oscillator and of the noise, allowing to determine the measures that a designer can take to increase the robustness of the oscillator as well as the consequences (trade-offs) that these measures have over its global performance. This model has been compared against both, simulations and real measurements, showing a very high accuracy to predict the effect of the high frequency substrate noise. The usefulness of the presented model as a design tool has been demonstrated in two case studies. Firstly, the conclusions obtained from the model have been applied in the design of an ultra low power consumption 2.5 GHz oscillator robust to the high frequency substrate noise with characteristics which make it compatible with the main communication standards in this frequency band. Finally, the model has been used as an analysis tool to evaluate the cause of the differences, in terms of performance degradation due to substrate noise, measured in two 60 GHz oscillators with two different tank inductor shielding strategies, floating and grounded. The model has determined that the robustness differences are caused by the improvement in the tank quality factor and in the oscillation amplitude and no by an increased isolation between the tank and the substrate.     Investigation on LIGA-MEMS and on-chip CMOS capacitors for a VCO application

    Modern communication systems require high performance radio frequency (RF) and microwave circuits and devices. This is becoming increasingly challenging to realize in the content of cost/size constraints. Integrated circuits (ICs) satisfy the cost/size requirement, but performance is often sacri¯ced. For instance, high quality factor (Q factor) passive components are difficult to achieve in standard silicon-based IC processes.In recent years, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices have been receiving increasing attention as a possible replacement for various on-chip passive elements, offering potential improvement in performance while maintaining high levels of integration. Variable capacitors (varactor) are common elements used in various applications. One of the MEMS variable capacitors that has been recently developed is built using deep X-ray lithography (as part of the LIGA process). This type of capacitor exhibits high quality factor at microwave frequencies.The complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology dominates the silicon IC process. CMOS becomes increasingly popular for RF applications due to its advantages in level of integration, cost and power consumption. This research demonstrates a CMOS voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) design which is used to investigate methods, advantages and problems in integrating LIGA-MEMS devices to CMOS RF circuits, and to evaluate the performance of the LIGA-MEMS variable capacitor in comparison with the conventional on-chip CMOS varactor. The VCO was designed and fabricated using TSMC 0.18 micron CMOS technology. The core of the VCO, including transistors, resistors, and on-chip inductors was designed to connect to either an on-chip CMOS varactor or an off-chip LIGA-MEMS capacitor to oscillate between 2.6 GHz and 2.7 GHz. Oscillator phase noise analysis is used to compare the performance between the two capacitors. The fabricated VCO occupied an area of 1 mm^2.This initial attempt at VCO fabrication did not produce a functional VCO, so the performance of the capacitors with the fabricated VCO could not be tested. However, the simulation results show that with this LIGA-MEMS capacitor, a 6.4 dB of phase noise improvement at 300 kHz offset from the carrier is possible in a CMOS-based VCO design

    A Low-Power Wireless Multichannel Microsystem for Reliable Neural Recording.

    This thesis reports on the development of a reliable, single-chip, multichannel wireless biotelemetry microsystem intended for extracellular neural recording from awake, mobile, and small animal models. The inherently conflicting requirements of low power and reliability are addressed in the proposed microsystem at architectural and circuit levels. Through employing the preliminary microsystems in various in-vivo experiments, the system requirements for reliable neural recording are identified and addressed at architectural level through the analytical tool: signal path co-optimization. The 2.85mm×3.84mm, mixed-signal ASIC integrates a low-noise front-end, programmable digital controller, an RF modulator, and an RF power amplifier (PA) at the ISM band of 433MHz on a single-chip; and is fabricated using a 0.5µm double-poly triple-metal n-well standard CMOS process. The proposed microsystem, incorporating the ASIC, is a 9-channel (8-neural, 1-audio) user programmable reliable wireless neural telemetry microsystem with a weight of 2.2g (including two 1.5V batteries) and size of 2.2×1.1×0.5cm3. The electrical characteristics of this microsystem are extensively characterized via benchtop tests. The transmitter consumes 5mW and has a measured total input referred voltage noise of 4.74µVrms, 6.47µVrms, and 8.27µVrms at transmission distances of 3m, 10m, and 20m, respectively. The measured inter-channel crosstalk is less than 3.5% and battery life is about an hour. To compare the wireless neural telemetry systems, a figure of merit (FoM) is defined as the reciprocal of the power spent on broadcasting one channel over one meter distance. The proposed microsystem’s FoM is an order of magnitude larger compared to all other research and commercial systems.     Wireless wire - ultra-low-power and high-data-rate wireless communication systems

    With the rapid development of communication technologies, wireless personal-area communication systems gain momentum and become increasingly important. When the market gets gradually saturated and the technology becomes much more mature, new demands on higher throughput push the wireless communication further into the high-frequency and high-data-rate direction. For example, in the IEEE 802.15.3c standard, a 60-GHz physical layer is specified, which occupies the unlicensed 57 to 64 GHz band and supports gigabit links for applications such as wireless downloading and data streaming. Along with the progress, however, both wireless protocols and physical systems and devices start to become very complex. Due to the limited cut-off frequency of the technology and high parasitic and noise levels at high frequency bands, the power consumption of these systems, especially of the RF front-ends, increases significantly. The reason behind this is that RF performance does not scale with technology at the same rate as digital baseband circuits. Based on the challenges encountered, the wireless-wire system is proposed for the millimeter wave high-data-rate communication. In this system, beamsteering directional communication front-ends are used, which confine the RF power within a narrow beam and increase the level of the equivalent isotropic radiation power by a factor equal to the number of antenna elements. Since extra gain is obtained from the antenna beamsteering, less front-end gain is required, which will reduce the power consumption accordingly. Besides, the narrow beam also reduces the interference level to other nodes. In order to minimize the system average power consumption, an ultra-low power asynchronous duty-cycled wake-up receiver is added to listen to the channel and control the communication modes. The main receiver is switched on by the wake-up receiver only when the communication is identified while in other cases it will always be in sleep mode with virtually no power consumed. Before transmitting the payload, the event-triggered transmitter will send a wake-up beacon to the wake-up receiver. As long as the wake-up beacon is longer than one cycle of the wake-up receiver, it can be captured and identified. Furthermore, by adopting a frequency-sweeping injection locking oscillator, the wake-up receiver is able to achieve good sensitivity, low latency and wide bandwidth simultaneously. In this way, high-data-rate communication can be achieved with ultra-low average power consumption. System power optimization is achieved by optimizing the antenna number, data rate, modulation scheme, transceiver architecture, and transceiver circuitries with regards to particular application scenarios. Cross-layer power optimization is performed as well. In order to verify the most critical elements of this new approach, a W-band injection-locked oscillator and the wake-up receiver have been designed and implemented in standard TSMC 65-nm CMOS technology. It can be seen from the measurement results that the wake-up receiver is able to achieve about -60 dBm sensitivity, 10 mW peak power consumption and 8.5 µs worst-case latency simultaneously. When applying a duty-cycling scheme, the average power of the wake-up receiver becomes lower than 10 µW if the event frequency is 1000 times/day, which matches battery-based or energy harvesting-based wireless applications. A 4-path phased-array main receiver is simulated working with 1 Gbps data rate and on-off-keying modulation. The average power consumption is 10 µW with 10 Gb communication data per day

    An Active Guarding Technique for Substrate Noise Suppression on LC-tank Oscillators

    An active guarding technique is demonstrated for substrate immunity improvement on LC-tank oscillators. Active components in the oscillator, which are sensitive to substrate noise and contribute to the output most, are guarded from the substrate perturbation by applying the active guarding circuit to decouple and also compensate the noise current. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed technique, noise signals of both single and multiple tones of various frequencies are injected to the substrate close to the guarded transistors and measure the sideband spurs by switching the active guarding circuit on/off respectively. Experimental results showed more than 11 dB noise suppression performances can be achieved in a wide frequency range from DC to 10GHz. By applying the active guarding circuit to a LC-tank oscillator, more than 17 dB spur suppression performance is obtained in the frequency range of interest.status: publishe

    SuperCDMS HVeV Run 2 Low-Mass Dark Matter Search, Highly Multiplexed Phonon-Mediated Particle Detector with Kinetic Inductance Detector, and the Blackbody Radiation in Cryogenic Experiments

    There is ample evidence of dark matter (DM), a phenomenon responsible for ≈ 85% of the matter content of the Universe that cannot be explained by the Standard Model (SM). One of the most compelling hypotheses is that DM consists of beyond-SM particle(s) that are nonluminous and nonbaryonic. So far, numerous efforts have been made to search for particle DM, and yet none has yielded an unambiguous observation of DM particles. We present in Chapter 2 the SuperCDMS HVeV Run 2 experiment, where we search for DM in the mass ranges of 0.5--10⁴ MeV/c² for the electron-recoil DM and 1.2--50 eV/c² for the dark photon and the Axion-like particle (ALP). SuperCDMS utilizes cryogenic crystals as detectors to search for DM interaction with the crystal atoms. The interaction is detected in the form of recoil energy mediated by phonons. In the HVeV project, we look for electron recoil, where we enhance the signal by the Neganov-Trofimov-Luke effect under high-voltage biases. The technique enabled us to detect quantized e⁻h⁺ creation at a 3% ionization energy resolution. Our work is the first DM search analysis considering charge trapping and impact ionization effects for solid-state detectors. We report our results as upper limits for the assumed particle models as functions of DM mass. Our results exclude the DM-electron scattering cross section, the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter, and the ALP axioelectric coupling above 8.4 x 10⁻³⁴ cm², 3.3 x 10⁻¹⁴, and 1.0 x 10⁻⁹, respectively. Currently every SuperCDMS detector is equipped with a few phonon sensors based on the transition-edge sensor (TES) technology. In order to improve phonon-mediated particle detectors' background rejection performance, we are developing highly multiplexed detectors utilizing kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) as phonon sensors. This work is detailed in chapter 3 and chapter 4. We have improved our previous KID and readout line designs, which enabled us to produce our first ø3" detector with 80 phonon sensors. The detector yielded a frequency placement accuracy of 0.07%, indicating our capability of implementing hundreds of phonon sensors in a typical SuperCDMS-style detector. We detail our fabrication technique for simultaneously employing Al and Nb for the KID circuit. We explain our signal model that includes extracting the RF signal, calibrating the RF signal into pair-breaking energy, and then the pulse detection. We summarize our noise condition and develop models for different noise sources. We combine the signal and the noise models to be an energy resolution model for KID-based phonon-mediated detectors. From this model, we propose strategies to further improve future detectors' energy resolution and introduce our ongoing implementations. Blackbody (BB) radiation is one of the plausible background sources responsible for the low-energy background currently preventing low-threshold DM experiments to search for lower DM mass ranges. In Chapter 5, we present our study for such background for cryogenic experiments. We have developed physical models and, based on the models, simulation tools for BB radiation propagation as photons or waves. We have also developed a theoretical model for BB photons' interaction with semiconductor impurities, which is one of the possible channels for generating the leakage current background in SuperCDMS-style detectors. We have planned for an experiment to calibrate our simulation and leakage current generation model. For the experiment, we have developed a specialized ``mesh TES'' photon detector inspired by cosmic microwave background experiments. We present its sensitivity model, the radiation source developed for the calibration, and the general plan of the experiment.</p

    Biophysical modeling to reverse engineer two mammalian neural circuits lower urinar Y tract and hippocampus

    Computational neuroscience provides tools to abstract and generalize principles of neuronal function using mathematics and computers. This dissertation reports biophysical modeling approaches to facilitate reverse engineering of two mammalian neural circuits - the lower urinary tract for the development of stimulation techniques, and the rodent hippocampus to understand mechanisms involved in theta rhythms. The LUT in mammals consists of the urinary bladder, external urethral sphincter (EUS) and the urethra. Control of the LUT is achieved via a neural circuit which integrates distinct components. Dysfunctions of the lower urinary tract (LUT) are caused by a variety of factors including spinal cord injury and diabetes. Our model builds on previous models by using biologically realistic spiking neurons to reproduce neural control of the LUT in both normal function and dysfunction cases. The hippocampus has long been implicated in memory storage and retrieval. Also, hippocampal theta oscillations (4-12 Hz) are consistently recorded during memory tasks and spatial navigation. Previous model revealed five distinct theta generators. The present study extends the work by probing deeper into the intrinsic theta mechanisms via characterizing the mechanisms as being resonant, i.e., inherently produce theta, or synchronizing, i.e., promote coordinated activity, or possibly both.     The neurosciences have experienced tremendous and wonderful progress in many areas, and the spectrum encompassing the neurosciences is expansive. Suffice it to mention a few classical fields: electrophysiology, genetics, physics, computer sciences, and more recently, social and marketing neurosciences. Of course, this large growth resulted in the production of many books. Perhaps the visual system and the visual cortex were in the vanguard because most animals do not produce their own light and offer thus the invaluable advantage of allowing investigators to conduct experiments in full control of the stimulus. In addition, the fascinating evolution of scientific techniques, the immense productivity of recent research, and the ensuing literature make it virtually impossible to publish in a single volume all worthwhile work accomplished throughout the scientific world. The days when a single individual, as Diderot, could undertake the production of an encyclopedia are gone forever. Indeed most approaches to studying the nervous system are valid and neuroscientists produce an almost astronomical number of interesting data accompanied by extremely worthy hypotheses which in turn generate new ventures in search of brain functions. Yet, it is fully justified to make an encore and to publish a book dedicated to visual cortex and beyond. Many reasons validate a book assembling chapters written by active researchers. Each has the opportunity to bind together data and explore original ideas whose fate will not fall into the hands of uncompromising reviewers of traditional journals. This book focuses on the cerebral cortex with a large emphasis on vision. Yet it offers the reader diverse approaches employed to investigate the brain, for instance, computer simulation, cellular responses, or rivalry between various targets and goal directed actions. This volume thus covers a large spectrum of research even though it is impossible to include all topics in the extremely diverse field of neurosciences

    Bio-Inspired Robotics

    Modern robotic technologies have enabled robots to operate in a variety of unstructured and dynamically-changing environments, in addition to traditional structured environments. Robots have, thus, become an important element in our everyday lives. One key approach to develop such intelligent and autonomous robots is to draw inspiration from biological systems. Biological structure, mechanisms, and underlying principles have the potential to provide new ideas to support the improvement of conventional robotic designs and control. Such biological principles usually originate from animal or even plant models, for robots, which can sense, think, walk, swim, crawl, jump or even fly. Thus, it is believed that these bio-inspired methods are becoming increasingly important in the face of complex applications. Bio-inspired robotics is leading to the study of innovative structures and computing with sensory–motor coordination and learning to achieve intelligence, flexibility, stability, and adaptation for emergent robotic applications, such as manipulation, learning, and control. This Special Issue invites original papers of innovative ideas and concepts, new discoveries and improvements, and novel applications and business models relevant to the selected topics of ``Bio-Inspired Robotics''. Bio-Inspired Robotics is a broad topic and an ongoing expanding field. This Special Issue collates 30 papers that address some of the important challenges and opportunities in this broad and expanding field
