    Analysis and Diagnostics of Adjacent and Nonadjacent Broken-Rotor-Bar Faults in Squirrel-Cage Induction Machines

    In this paper, faults associated with the rotor of an induction machine are considered. More specifically, effects of adjacent and nonadjacent bar breakages on rotor fault diagnostics in squirrel-cage induction machines are studied. It is shown that some nonadjacent bar breakages may result in the masking of the commonly used fault indices and, hence, may lead to a possible misdiagnosis of the machine. A discussion of the possible scenarios of these breakages as well as some conclusions regarding the types of squirrel-cage induction machines (number of poles, number of squirrel-cage bars, etc.) that may be more prone to these nonadjacent types of failures are presented. This discussion is supported through both simulation and experimental results. It is also shown that secondary fault effects can be used to diagnose such nonadjacent bar breakages

    Modeling and Validation of a Fault Mitigation Method in Induction Motor-Drive Systems Using Magnetic Equivalent Circuits

    In this thesis, a fault mitigation method for delta-connected induction motor-drive systems under a two-phase open-delta faulty operating condition is analyzed and verified. More specifically, this fault mitigation technique can provide a set of almost balanced motor line currents, and significantly reduce torque ripples, even when the machine runs under the aforementioned two-phase open-delta faulty operating condition. This condition is analyzed using a Magnetic Equivalent Circuit (MEC) model. This model is developed for a delta-connected induction motor which is coupled to its drive system, including the fault mitigation controller. That is, the MEC model is linked to its associated PWM inverter to include the electronic switching effects. This global motor-inverter model was simulated in a Matlab-Simulink environment, under both healthy and faulty operating conditions, while the inverter is operated in both the open-loop scalar control and closed-loop vector control modes. The results obtained from the global model are compared in this thesis to the results obtained from the corresponding Time-Stepping Finite Element (TSFE) simulation and experimental motor-drive test data. A comparative analysis of the motor performance obtained from these results, under the two-phase open-delta faulty operating case, is presented in this work. The simulation and experimental data show that the delta-connected MEC model can provide reasonably accurate results. Thus, the validity and applicability of the fault mitigation technique is thereby verified

    Modeling of Balanced and Unbalanced Three-Phase Induction Motor under Balanced and Unbalanced Supply Based on Winding Function Method

    An accurate model of balanced and unbalanced three-phase Induction Motor (IM) under balanced and unbalanced supply conditions based on Winding Function Method (WFM) is presented in this work. In this paper, the unbalanced condition in three-phase IM is limited to stator winding open-phase fault. The analysis of presented models is shown in details which allow predicting the performance of 3-phase IM under different conditions. Computer simulations were obtained using the MATLAB software for a three-phase squirrel cage IM. MATLAB simulation results show that the oscillation of the speed and electromagnetic torque has increased considerably due to the open-phase fault in stator windings

    A new method of accurate broken rotor bar diagnosis based on modulation signal bispectrum analysis of motor current signals

    Motor current signature analysis (MCSA) has been an effective way of monitoring electrical machines for many years. However, inadequate accuracy in diagnosing incipient broken rotor bars (BRB) has motivated many studies into improving this method. In this paper a modulation signal bispectrum (MSB) analysis is applied to motor currents from different broken bar cases and a new MSB based sideband estimator (MSB-SE) and sideband amplitude estimator are introduced for obtaining the amplitude at (1±2s)fs(1±2s)fs (s is the rotor slip and fsfs is the fundamental supply frequency) with high accuracy. As the MSB-SE has a good performance of noise suppression, the new estimator produces more accurate results in predicting the number of BRB, compared with conventional power spectrum analysis. Moreover, the paper has also developed an improved model for motor current signals under rotor fault conditions and an effective method to decouple the BRB current which interferes with that of speed oscillations associated with BRB. These provide theoretical supports for the new estimators and clarify the issues in using conventional bispectrum analysis

    Wavelet-Based Analysis of MCSA for Fault Detection in Electrical Machine

    Early detection of irregularity in electrical machines is important because of their diversity of use in different fields. A proper fault detection scheme helps to stop the propagation of failure or limits its escalation to severe degrees, and thus it prevents unscheduled downtimes that cause loss of production and financial income. Among different modes of failures that may occur in the electrical machines, the rotor-related faults are around 20%. Successful detection of any failure in electrical machines is achieved by using a suitable condition monitoring followed by accurate signal processing techniques to extract the fault features. This article aims to present the extraction of features appearing in current signals using wavelet analysis when there is a rotor fault of eccentricity and broken rotor bar. In this respect, a brief explanation on rotor failures and different methods of condition monitoring with the purpose of rotor fault detection is provided. Then, motor current signature analysis, the fault-related features appeared in the current spectrum and wavelet transform analyses of the signal to extract these features are explained. Finally, two case studies involving the wavelet analysis of the current signal for the detection of rotor eccentricity and broken rotor bar are presented
