A digital computer program for the dynamic interaction simulation of controls and structure (DISCOS), volume 1

    Get PDF
A theoretical development and associated digital computer program system for the dynamic simulation and stability analysis of passive and actively controlled spacecraft are presented. The dynamic system (spacecraft) is modeled as an assembly of rigid and/or flexible bodies not necessarily in a topological tree configuration. The computer program system is used to investigate total system dynamic characteristics, including interaction effects between rigid and/or flexible bodies, control systems, and a wide range of environmental loadings. In addition, the program system is used for designing attitude control systems and for evaluating total dynamic system performance, including time domain response and frequency domain stability analyses

Image Reconstruction in Photoacoustic Computed Tomography with Acoustically Heterogeneous Media

Photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT), also known as optoacoustic or thermoacoustic tomography, is a rapidly emerging hybrid imaging modality that combines optical image contrast with ultrasound detection. The majority of currently available PACT image reconstruction algorithms are based on idealized imaging models that assume a lossless and acoustically homogeneous medium. However, in many applications of PACT these assumptions are violated and the induced photoacoustic (PA) wavefields are scattered and absorbed as they propagate to the receiving transducers. In those applications of PACT, the reconstructed images can contain significant distortions and artifacts if the inhomogeneous acoustic properties of the object are not accounted for in the reconstruction algorithm. In this dissertation, we develop and investigate a full-wave approach to iterative image reconstruction in PACT with acoustically heterogeneous lossy media. A key contribution of this work is the establishment of a discrete imaging model that is based on the exact PA wave equation and a procedure to implement an associated matched discrete forward and backprojection operator pair, which permits application of a variety of modern iterative image reconstruction algorithms that can mitigate the effects of noise, data incompleteness and model errors. Another key contribution is the development of an optimization approach to joint reconstruction (JR) of absorbed optical energy density and speed of sound in PACT, which is utilized to investigate the numerical properties of the JR problem and its feasibility in practice. We also develop a TR-based methodology to compensate for heterogeneous acoustic attenuation that obeys a frequency power law. In addition, we propose a image reconstruction methodology for transcranial PACT that employs detailed subject-specific descriptions of the acoustic properties of the skull to mitigate skull-induced distortions in the reconstructed image

Multidimensional random sampling for Fourier transform estimation

    Get PDF
This research considers the Fourier transform calculations of multidimensional signals. The calculations are based on random sampling, where the sampling points are nonuniformly distributed according to strategically selected probability functions, to provide new opportunities that are unavailable in the uniform sampling environment. The latter imposes the sampling density of at least the Nyquist density. Otherwise, alias frequencies occur in the processed bandwidth which can lead to irresolvable processing problems. Random sampling can mitigate Nyquist limit that classical uniform-sampling-based approaches endure, for the purpose of performing direct (with no prefiltering or downconverting) Fourier analysis of (high-frequency) signals with unknown spectrum support using low sampling density. Lowering the sampling density while achieving the same signal processing objective could be an efficient, if not essential, way of exploiting the system resources in terms of power, hardware complexity and the acquisition-processing time. In this research we investigate and devise novel random sampling estimation schemes for multidimensional Fourier transform. The main focus of the investigation and development is on the aspect of the quality of estimated Fourier transform in terms of the sampling density. The former aspect is crucial as it serves towards the heart objective of random sampling of lowering the sampling density. This research was motivated by the applicability of the random-sampling-based approaches in determining the Fourier transform in multidimensional Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to resolve the critical issue of its long experimental time

Composite PID control with unknown dynamics estimator for rotomagnet plant

    Get PDF
Although PID control has been widely used in practical engineering, its ability to reject external disturbance and to handle severe nonlinearities should be further enhanced. In this paper, we present a simple robust unknown dynamics estimation, which can be easily incorporated into PID control to achieve satisfactory control performance for a rotomagnet plant subject to period disturbance. The use of this estimator together with PID control leads to a feedforward like composite control framework. Unlike other estimators, only low-pass filter operations on the input and output and simple algebraic operations are needed to construct our estimator, while exponential convergence can be guaranteed. Numerical simulations are given to show the validity of the proposed estimator and composite PID control.Postprint (published version

Predicting the Future is like Completing a Painting!

This article is an introductory work towards a larger research framework relative to Scientific Prediction. It is a mixed between science and philosophy of science, therefore we can talk about Experimental Philosophy of Science. As a first result, we introduce a new forecasting method based on image completion, named Forecasting Method by Image Inpainting (FM2I). In fact, time series forecasting is transformed into fully images- and signal-based processing procedures. After transforming a time series data into its corresponding image, the problem of data forecasting becomes essentially a problem of image inpainting problem, i.e., completing missing data in the image. An extensive experimental evaluation is conducted using a large dataset proposed by the well-known M3-competition. Results show that FM2I represents an efficient and robust tool for time series forecasting. It has achieved prominent results in terms of accuracy and outperforms the best M3 forecasting methods.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figure

Resynthesis of Acoustic Scenes Combining Sound Source Separation and WaveField Synthesis Techniques

[EN] Source Separation has been a subject of intense research in many signal processing applications, ranging from speech processing to medical image analysis. Applied to spatial audio systems, it can be used to overcome one fundamental limitation in 3D scene resynthesis: the need of having the independent signals for each source available. Wave-field Synthesis is a spatial sound reproduction system that can synthesize an acoustic field by means of loudspeaker arrays and it is also capable of positioning several sources in space. However, the individual signals corresponding to these sources must be available and this is often a difficult problem. In this work, we propose to use Sound Source Separation techniques in order to obtain different tracks from stereo and mono mixtures. Some separation methods have been implemented and tested, having been one of them developed by the author. Although existing algorithms are far from getting hi-fi quality, subjective tests show how it is not necessary an optimum separation for getting acceptable results in 3D scene reproductionCobos Serrano, M.
