    A review of GIS-based information sharing systems

    GIS-based information sharing systems have been implemented in many of England and Wales' Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs). The information sharing role of these systems is seen as being vital to help in the review of crime, disorder and misuse of drugs; to sustain strategic objectives, to monitor interventions and initiatives; and support action plans for service delivery. This evaluation into these systems aimed to identify the lessons learned from existing systems, identify how these systems can be best used to support the business functions of CDRPs, identify common weaknesses across the systems, and produce guidelines on how these systems should be further developed. At present there are in excess of 20 major systems distributed across England and Wales. This evaluation considered a representative sample of ten systems. To date, little documented evidence has been collected by the systems that demonstrate the direct impact they are having in reducing crime and disorder, and the misuse of drugs. All point to how they are contributing to more effective partnership working, but all systems must be encouraged to record how they are contributing to improving community safety. Demonstrating this impact will help them to assure their future role in their CDRPs. By reviewing the systems wholly, several key ingredients were identified that were evident in contributing to the effectiveness of these systems. These included the need for an effective partnership business model within which the system operates, and the generation of good quality multi-agency intelligence products from the system. In helping to determine the future development of GIS-based information sharing systems, four key community safety partnership business service functions have been identified that these systems can most effectively support. These functions support the performance review requirements of CDRPs, operate a problem solving scanning and analysis role, and offer an interface with the public. By following these business service functions as a template will provide for a more effective application of these systems nationally

    Governance has been identified as central aspect of sustainable forest management. While all participants within the forest policy arena would agree with this observation, it has been less easy to determine how best to evaluate forest governance. Building on the work of the 1992 UN Statement of Forest Principles, and using a hierarchical framework of principles, criteria and indicators (PC&I), Dr Cadman has developed a consistent approach to evaluating forest governance at the global, regional, national and local levels. Tim and Tek applied their work to a range of global policy mechanisms, including REDD+, and has been used by the forest sector in developing countries (Nepal) to develop on-the-ground standards for evaluating REDD+ effectiveness and governance quality

    From Sensor to Observation Web with Environmental Enablers in the Future Internet

    This paper outlines the grand challenges in global sustainability research and the objectives of the FP7 Future Internet PPP program within the Digital Agenda for Europe. Large user communities are generating significant amounts of valuable environmental observations at local and regional scales using the devices and services of the Future Internet. These communities’ environmental observations represent a wealth of information which is currently hardly used or used only in isolation and therefore in need of integration with other information sources. Indeed, this very integration will lead to a paradigm shift from a mere Sensor Web to an Observation Web with semantically enriched content emanating from sensors, environmental simulations and citizens. The paper also describes the research challenges to realize the Observation Web and the associated environmental enablers for the Future Internet. Such an environmental enabler could for instance be an electronic sensing device, a web-service application, or even a social networking group affording or facilitating the capability of the Future Internet applications to consume, produce, and use environmental observations in cross-domain applications. The term ?envirofied? Future Internet is coined to describe this overall target that forms a cornerstone of work in the Environmental Usage Area within the Future Internet PPP program. Relevant trends described in the paper are the usage of ubiquitous sensors (anywhere), the provision and generation of information by citizens, and the convergence of real and virtual realities to convey understanding of environmental observations. The paper addresses the technical challenges in the Environmental Usage Area and the need for designing multi-style service oriented architecture. Key topics are the mapping of requirements to capabilities, providing scalability and robustness with implementing context aware information retrieval. Another essential research topic is handling data fusion and model based computation, and the related propagation of information uncertainty. Approaches to security, standardization and harmonization, all essential for sustainable solutions, are summarized from the perspective of the Environmental Usage Area. The paper concludes with an overview of emerging, high impact applications in the environmental areas concerning land ecosystems (biodiversity), air quality (atmospheric conditions) and water ecosystems (marine asset management)

    A Framework for Uncertain Cloud Data Security and Recovery Based on Hybrid Multi-User Medical Decision Learning Patterns

    Machine learning has been supporting real-time cloud based medical computing systems. However, most of the computing servers are independent of data security and recovery scheme in multiple virtual machines due to high computing cost and time. Also, this cloud based medical applications require static security parameters for cloud data security. Cloud based medical applications require multiple servers to store medical records or machine learning patterns for decision making. Due to high Uncertain computational memory and time, these cloud systems require an efficient data security framework to provide strong data access control among the multiple users. In this work, a hybrid cloud data security framework is developed to improve the data security on the large machine learning patterns in real-time cloud computing environment. This work is implemented in two phases’ i.e. data replication phase and multi-user data access security phase. Initially, machine decision patterns are replicated among the multiple servers for Uncertain data recovering phase. In the multi-access cloud data security framework, a hybrid multi-access key based data encryption and decryption model is implemented on the large machine learning medical patterns for data recovery and security process. Experimental results proved that the present two-phase data recovering, and security framework has better computational efficiency than the conventional approaches on large medical decision patterns

    Towards data grids for microarray expression profiles

    The UK DTI funded Biomedical Research Informatics Delivered by Grid Enabled Services (BRIDGES) project developed a Grid infrastructure through which research into the genetic causes of hypertension could be supported by scientists within the large Wellcome Trust funded Cardiovascular Functional Genomics project. The BRIDGES project had a focus on developing a compute Grid and a data Grid infrastructure with security at its heart. Building on the work within BRIDGES, the BBSRC funded Grid enabled Microarray Expression Profile Search (GEMEPS) project plans to provide an enhanced data Grid infrastructure to support richer queries needed for the discovery and analysis of microarray data sets, also based upon a fine-grained security infrastructure. This paper outlines the experiences gained within BRIDGES and outlines the status of the GEMEPS project, the open challenges that remain and plans for the future
