Set of support, demodulation, paramodulation: a historical perspective
This article is a tribute to the scientific legacy of automated reasoning pioneer and JAR founder Lawrence T. (Larry) Wos. Larry's main technical contributions were the set-of-support strategy for resolution theorem proving, and the demodulation and paramodulation inference rules for building equality into resolution. Starting from the original definitions of these concepts in Larry's papers, this survey traces their evolution, unearthing the often forgotten trails that connect Larry's original definitions to those that became standard in the field
Extensional Higher-Order Paramodulation in Leo-III
Leo-III is an automated theorem prover for extensional type theory with
Henkin semantics and choice. Reasoning with primitive equality is enabled by
adapting paramodulation-based proof search to higher-order logic. The prover
may cooperate with multiple external specialist reasoning systems such as
first-order provers and SMT solvers. Leo-III is compatible with the TPTP/TSTP
framework for input formats, reporting results and proofs, and standardized
communication between reasoning systems, enabling e.g. proof reconstruction
from within proof assistants such as Isabelle/HOL. Leo-III supports reasoning
in polymorphic first-order and higher-order logic, in all normal quantified
modal logics, as well as in different deontic logics. Its development had
initiated the ongoing extension of the TPTP infrastructure to reasoning within
non-classical logics.Comment: 34 pages, 7 Figures, 1 Table; submitted articl
Saturation-based decision procedures for extensions of the guarded fragment
We apply the framework of Bachmair and Ganzinger for saturation-based theorem proving to derive a range of decision procedures for logical formalisms, starting with a simple terminological language EL, which allows for conjunction and existential restrictions only, and ending with extensions of the guarded fragment with equality, constants, functionality, number restrictions and compositional axioms of form S ◦ T ⊆ H. Our procedures are derived in a uniform way using standard saturation-based calculi enhanced with simplification rules based on the general notion of redundancy. We argue that such decision procedures can be applied for reasoning in expressive description logics, where they have certain advantages over traditionally used tableau procedures, such as optimal worst-case complexity and direct correctness proofs.
Factor Varieties and Symbolic Computation
We propose an algebraization of classical and non-classical logics, based on factor varieties and decomposition operators. In particular, we provide a new method for determining whether a propositional formula is a tautology or a contradiction. This method can be autom-atized by defining a term rewriting system that enjoys confluence and strong normalization. This also suggests an original notion of logical gate and circuit, where propositional variables becomes logical gates and logical operations are implemented by substitution. Concerning formulas with quantifiers, we present a simple algorithm based on factor varieties for reducing first-order classical logic to equational logic. We achieve a completeness result for first-order classical logic without requiring any additional structure
Automated Deduction – CADE 28
This open access book constitutes the proceeding of the 28th International Conference on Automated Deduction, CADE 28, held virtually in July 2021. The 29 full papers and 7 system descriptions presented together with 2 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 76 submissions. CADE is the major forum for the presentation of research in all aspects of automated deduction, including foundations, applications, implementations, and practical experience. The papers are organized in the following topics: Logical foundations; theory and principles; implementation and application; ATP and AI; and system descriptions
