A high-tolerance matching method against load fluctuation for ultrasonic transducers

    Get PDF
Fluctuation of acoustic load significantly weakens the performance of ultrasonic system. To address this problem in a simple way, we consider the main input and output variables related to the ultrasonic transducer's performance and propose a detailed mathematical model based on the simplest LC matching network containing only one capacitor and one inductor. In this model, a new resonance frequency f0 brought by matching components was found and defined. The optimum analysis method is used to solve the model, and a high-tolerance matching method against load fluctuation is obtained. Analysis indicates that when activated at the mechanical resonance frequency, the impedance and apparent power of the PT matched by the proposed method are constant no matter how the load changes, and thereby can significantly increase the stability and robustness of ultrasonic systems. For its simple structure and high performance, the proposed matching method can be widely applied in most ultrasonic systems. The tolerance of the proposed method against other environmental factors and high-order LC matching networks were also discussed. In addition, the feasibility and advantage of the proposed matching method are also verified by experiments

Development of a real-time ultrasonic sensing system for automated and robotic welding

This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. The implementation of robotic technology into welding processes is made difficult by the inherent process variables of part location, fit up, orientation and repeatability. Considering these aspects, to ensure weld reproducibility consistency and quality, advanced adaptive control techniques are essential. These involve not only the development of adequate sensors for seam tracking and joint recognition but also developments of overall machines with a level of artificial intelligence sufficient for automated welding. The development of such a prototype system which utilizes a manipulator arm, ultrasonic sensors and a transistorised welding power source is outlined. This system incorporates three essential aspects. It locates and tracks the welding seam ensuring correct positioning of the welding head relatively to the joint preparation. Additionally, it monitors the joint profile of the molten weld pool and modifies the relevant heat input parameters ensuring consistent penetration, joint filling and acceptable weld bead shape. Finally, it makes use of both the above information to reconstruct three-dimensional images of the weld pool silhouettes providing in-process inspection capabilities of the welded joints. Welding process control strategies have been incorporated into the system based on quantitative relationships between input parameters and weld bead shape configuration allowing real-time decisions to be made during the process of welding, without the need for operation intervention.British Technology Group (BTG

A novel fast resonance frequency tracking method based on the admittance circle for ultrasonic transducers

    Get PDF
For ultrasonic systems, the resonance frequency tracking (RFT) is the most critical step. The rapid development in advanced material processing and microelectronics package has increased the demand of high speed RFT. Therefore, this paper proposes a fast RFT (FRFT) method according to the characteristics of piezoelectric transducers' (PT) admittance circle. In the proposed method, the PT is driven at two different frequencies, and the PT's admittance is collected and calibrated. Then, the PT's mechanical resonance frequency is derived using the admittance information after calibration. The proposed method is not affected by the parallel capacitor and the matching circuit. Additionally, the optimal initial values of the involved parameters are determined in order to improve the accuracy of the proposed method. Furthermore, an improved method based on multiple tracking is also provided. Simulations and experiments demonstrate that using the proposed FRFT method, the ultrasonic system can track the resonance frequency in a short time with high accuracy

Variable Gain Type PID Control Using PSO for Ultrasonic Motor

    Get PDF
Ultrasonic motor exhibits non-linearity that relates the input (Phase difference) and output (Velocity). It also causes serious characteristic changes during operation. PID control has been widely used as the design scheme for USM. However, it is difficult for the conventional PID control to compensate such characteristic changes of the plant and non-linearity. To overcome this problem, we propose a variable gain type PID control in which PID gains are optimized using a particle swarm optimization (PSO)

Development of intelligent drone battery charging system based on wireless power transmission using hill climbing algorithm.

    Get PDF
In this work, an advanced drone battery charging system is developed. The system is composed of a drone charging station with multiple power transmitters and a receiver to charge the battery of a drone. A resonance inductive coupling-based wireless power transmission technique is used. With limits of wireless power transmission in inductive coupling, it is necessary that the coupling between a transmitter and receiver be strong for efficient power transmission; however, for a drone, it is normally hard to land it properly on a charging station or a charging device to get maximum coupling for efficient wireless power transmission. Normally, some physical sensors such as ultrasonic sensors and infrared sensors are used to align the transmitter and receiver for proper coupling and wireless power transmission; however, in this system, a novel method based on the hill climbing algorithm is proposed to control the coupling between the transmitter and a receiver without using any physical sensor. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm was checked using MATLAB. A practical test bench was developed for the system and several experiments were conducted under different scenarios. The system is fully automatic and gives 98.8% accuracy (achieved under different test scenarios) for mitigating the poor landing effect. Also, the efficiency η of 85% is achieved for wireless power transmission. The test results show that the proposed drone battery charging system is efficient enough to mitigate the coupling effect caused by the poor landing of the drone, with the possibility to land freely on the charging station without the worry of power transmission loss
