What’s in it for me? Incentive-compatible route coordination of crowdsourced resources
With the recent trend in crowdsourcing, i.e., using the power of crowds to assist in satisfying demand, the pool of resources suitable for GeoPresence-capable systems has expanded to include already roaming devices, such as mobile phones, and moving vehicles. We envision an environment, in which the motion of these crowdsourced mobile resources is coordinated, according to their preexisting schedules to satisfy geo-temporal demand on a mobility field. In this paper, we propose an incentive compatible route coordination mechanism for crowdsourced resources, in which participating mobile agents satisfy geo-temporal requests in return for monetary rewards. We define the Flexible Route Coordination (FRC) problem, in which an agent’s flexibility is exploited to maximize the coverage of a mobility field, with an objective to maximize the revenue collected from satisfied paying requests. Given that the FRC problem is NP-hard, we define an optimal algorithm to plan the route of a single agent on a graph with evolving labels, then we use that algorithm to define a 1/2-approximation algorithm to solve the problem in its general model, with multiple agents. Moreover, we define an incentive compatible, rational, and cash-positive payment mechanism, which guarantees that an agent’s truthfulness about its flexibility is an ex-post Nash equilibrium strategy. Finally, we analyze the proposed mechanisms theoretically, and evaluate their performance experimentally using real mobility traces from urban environments.Supported in part by NSF Grants, #1430145, #1414119, #1347522, #1239021, and #1012798

TOFEC: Achieving Optimal Throughput-Delay Trade-off of Cloud Storage Using Erasure Codes
Our paper presents solutions using erasure coding, parallel connections to
storage cloud and limited chunking (i.e., dividing the object into a few
smaller segments) together to significantly improve the delay performance of
uploading and downloading data in and out of cloud storage.
TOFEC is a strategy that helps front-end proxy adapt to level of workload by
treating scalable cloud storage (e.g. Amazon S3) as a shared resource requiring
admission control. Under light workloads, TOFEC creates more smaller chunks and
uses more parallel connections per file, minimizing service delay. Under heavy
workloads, TOFEC automatically reduces the level of chunking (fewer chunks with
increased size) and uses fewer parallel connections to reduce overhead,
resulting in higher throughput and preventing queueing delay. Our trace-driven
simulation results show that TOFEC's adaptation mechanism converges to an
appropriate code that provides the optimal delay-throughput trade-off without
reducing system capacity. Compared to a non-adaptive strategy optimized for
throughput, TOFEC delivers 2.5x lower latency under light workloads; compared
to a non-adaptive strategy optimized for latency, TOFEC can scale to support
over 3x as many requests
Storage Sizing and Placement through Operational and Uncertainty-Aware Simulations
As the penetration level of transmission-scale time-intermittent renewable
generation resources increases, control of flexible resources will become
important to mitigating the fluctuations due to these new renewable resources.
Flexible resources may include new or existing synchronous generators as well
as new energy storage devices. Optimal placement and sizing of energy storage
to minimize costs of integrating renewable resources is a difficult
optimization problem. Further,optimal planning procedures typically do not
consider the effect of the time dependence of operations and may lead to
unsatisfactory results. Here, we use an optimal energy storage control
algorithm to develop a heuristic procedure for energy storage placement and
sizing. We perform operational simulation under various time profiles of
intermittent generation, loads and interchanges (artificially generated or from
historical data) and accumulate statistics of the usage of storage at each node
under the optimal dispatch. We develop a greedy heuristic based on the
accumulated statistics to obtain a minimal set of nodes for storage placement.
The quality of the heuristic is explored by comparing our results to the
obvious heuristic of placing storage at the renewables for IEEE benchmarks and

Cloud computing resource scheduling and a survey of its evolutionary approaches
A disruptive technology fundamentally transforming the way that computing services are delivered, cloud computing offers information and communication technology users a new dimension of convenience of resources, as services via the Internet. Because cloud provides a finite pool of virtualized on-demand resources, optimally scheduling them has become an essential and rewarding topic, where a trend of using Evolutionary Computation (EC) algorithms is emerging rapidly. Through analyzing the cloud computing architecture, this survey first presents taxonomy at two levels of scheduling cloud resources. It then paints a landscape of the scheduling problem and solutions. According to the taxonomy, a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art approaches is presented systematically. Looking forward, challenges and potential future research directions are investigated and invited, including real-time scheduling, adaptive dynamic scheduling, large-scale scheduling, multiobjective scheduling, and distributed and parallel scheduling. At the dawn of Industry 4.0, cloud computing scheduling for cyber-physical integration with the presence of big data is also discussed. Research in this area is only in its infancy, but with the rapid fusion of information and data technology, more exciting and agenda-setting topics are likely to emerge on the horizon
